This summer I took my 86 year old dad across the country to meet up with folks I hadn’t seen since 1984 when I was 8 years old.

A little background on this story.
About my Dad and his buddy Ronnie.
A couple ball players from the Bronx.
Back in the 50s they would light it up.

In the 70s they coached together
at Stevenson HS in the South Bronx.
Which was ground zero
for the birth of hip hop.

Together they won back to back
NYC HS basketball championships.
Refining their skills and teachin the kids.
Setting their sights on the next level they did.

They moved together to D1 college
at University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Won 2 conference championships during their stay
Than in '84, they went their own way.

Traveling back to the past.
Make sure you got your boarding pass.
Across the country, see old friends at last.
And at the bash raise your glass.

So this summer it was
Ronnie’s 80th Birthday party.
He was holding a bash in Florida
All the way on the other side of the country.

I was like Dad, yo we gotta go.
You gotta go see your old buddies.
So we packed our stuff and
hopped a couple of planes right across the country.

As we walked into Ronnie’s house.
With his family and friends
it was like being in NYC again.

Everybody’s loud, talking at the same time.
With their NYC accents.
Then Russel, Ronnie’s son walks in,
He’s deaf, and his talk is so distinctive.
Instantly transformed back to '84.
When me and Russel used to play together.

The next night at the bash.
I sat with my Dad and Kevin Brown.
One of my Dad’s players from Bronx.
He also DJed during the birth of Hip Hop.

It was enlightening talking with Kevin Brown
who was involved in that scene.
Involved in hip hop,
since it's infancy.

Another old D1 player who attended, Roy Ralston.
A rowdy, big, loud country boy, fit in well with the New Yorkers.
He picked me up almost over his head, shaking me and shouting,
“Jeddy you’re a kid! Jeddy you’re a kid! Jeddy you’re a kid! Jeddy you're a kid."

Traveling back to the past

I remember all these people
As larger than life figures when I was a kid.

That was something really special.

December 2024 in two psychiatric wards.
After the first, I came out worse than I was before.
Been in and out of these places since I was 16.
Bipolar Disorder, tryin to keep my life from becoming mean.

Inevitably, I have a breakthrough episode.
It’s time again to include this shit in my flows.
Disruptive to my family, my life, and my wife.  And we all know.
When the chemicals become imbalanced in my brain, I have to go

Get locked up in a psychiatric ward and hope for the best.
Hopefully my meds can get changed and be better for the rest.
And maybe for many years, I can stay stable.
And continue on the right path while I’m able.

Don't cry for me, I'm doin the best I can.
Always come out the other side, ready to jam again.
I'm a fighter, writer, flyer, survivor.
And I'll keep doin it until the end.

Cedar Hills Psychiatric Hospital, beginning of December.
My wife drove me there, Having a bipolar episode as ever.
First night there, we all watched a fist fight in the hall.
Short staffed with no security gurards, could barely stop anything at all.

The place was unsafe, girls crying in the hall.
They were scared, the screaming and banging on the walls.
No striings or belts allowed.
We could only have our phones each day for an hour.

One guy walked around with his pants down to the ground.
2 people tried to kill themselves by banging their heads on the wall. 

I spent my time trying to block it all out.
Walking the hall with hospital provided headphones.
That only connected to the local radio stations.

Don't cry for me, I'm doin the best I can.
Always come out the other side, ready to jam again.
I'm a fighter, writer, flyer, survivor.
And I'll keep doin it until the end.

Got out of that shithole.
2 days later I found myself in a different ward.
Downstairs like in a holding cell.
After a day and a night I made it upstairs.

I was able to have my phone and earbuds.
I walked the circle 737 times.
33 miles.

Met this guy who could not sleep at all.
And the Mexican gangster running up and down the hall.
In the middle of the night.
Yelling, "They're gonna kill us allllllll!!"

A week later Friday, they fixed my meds and I felt better.
Dr Rose said if I left that weekend they’d put me on a hold. 
3 days later they let me go and I was ready to roll.

Returned to my car and called my wife.
Now I’m stable and it’s back to my life.

Growing up  in the 70s and 80s.
Had a tough time growin up in Spokane.
An absent father and an alcoholic mother.
Yea, she knew what it was to persevere.

She was married at age 17.
Two kids later, divorced at 19.
Had her third kid at age 21.
In another relationship with a struggling one.

This went on for 8 years.
Till she saw some fears,
He just couldn’t lay off the beers.

Now a single mom with 3 kids.
What an amazing job she did.

With street smarts and little education.
She started college, 30 years of dedication.
She still had to work and provide for the kids.

I know a lot of yall out there are struggling through hell.
And as time goes on there seems to be less help.

Everything should come clean, shit, it just takes time.

In my experience, and I know I’m movin with privilege.
As a white, straight, male, I blend in easy, clear, and free.
I can’t imagine how tough it must be
for all yall minorities who have to deal with the constant crap you see.

Now we got problems galore.
As we move into the new year.
But I don’t really wanna get negative.
Not on this track here.

This is the first day of the year.
Let’s first recover from New Years Eve.
Gonna sit in my studio, record a few tracks.
Enjoy myself till the day is done.

Cause this year right here is gonna be the one.
Where I don’t get locked in the psych ward, none.
Where I learn more musical skills by doing and having fun.
Gonna get better on my banjo, yuh!

Gonna extend my 800 day streak on Duolingo
As I get more proficient in Spanish, ah ha!
Then I can talk more with the immigrants on the crew.

There will be struggles as always.
