Since debuting on Central Processing Unit with 2018’s Projections EP, Silicon Scally has averaged a release a year for the Sheffield label. New offering Revelations finds the one born Carl Finlow keeping up that hit rate. Both Finlow’s name and his many aliases have become bywords for top-draw electro productions since he first emerged in the mid-90s, and Revelations is no different - this is dystopian machine-funk of the highest quality.

With its burbling electro groove, piston-precise drum programming and plethora of gurgling synths, Revelations’ opening title-track comes beamed in direct from the Dopplereffekt realm. However, as well as being a mid-set weapon of serious heft, the manner in which Finlow daubs the track with some plaintive synth chords will also bring just a hint of pathos to the dance. That wistful edge quickly dissipates when following cut ‘Walk Over’ homes into view - ushered in by eerie, paranoid synth work, ‘Walk Over’ has an air of technoid ghoulishness to it which invokes John Carpenter sparring with Egyptian Lover. 

Revelations’ flip is taken up by a pair of remixes that go deep on the A-side jams. The first of these sees Finlow himself setting aside his Silicon Scally cap and reworking ‘Walk Over’ under his own name, upping the eerie feel of the original still further by enveloping the track in icy atmospherics as well as phasing grizzled synths and wailing sirens in and out of the mix. Following close behind is Fleck E.S.C, whose reworking of Revelations’ title-track marks a first appearance on CPU since 2018 for this French electro expert. Fleck E.S.C delivers a low-slung synth-funk masterclass here - as the track’s laser-gun bassline invokes Drexciya, the producer guides the listener through a variety of shadow-realms populated by metallic clangs, insectoid chattering and some strangely hypnotic textures.

Silicon Scally (Carl Finlow) continues his fine run on Central Processing Unit with the Revelations EP, a set of steely electro bangers which comes backed up by remixes from Fleck E.S.C and Finlow himself.

TL PREMIERE : Silicon Scally - Revelations [Central Processing Unit]

First in the TRUST XY recombination series. /DL/MS/, Keith Tucker, The Exaltics, and Privacy remix DJ Glow, Microthol, DJ Stingray, and VC-118A.

"Crises invite introspection. To counter the social and cultural void of 2020 we have asked friends and favorite artists to analyze, extract and recombine our electric DNA for the TRUST XY recombination series.

DJ Glow’s (@gl03) ‘The City’ opened the first TRUST release back in 1998 and starts off XY.1 as well. Viennese duo /DL/MS/ (@dl-ms), whose album debut will drop on TRUST later this year, turns its brittle lo-fi funk into an airy electro stepper, complete with the original’s classic arcade samples.

Keith Tucker needs no introduction as a Detroit techno master, from early Direct Beat to this year's Optic Nerve album for Axis Records. Microthol (@microthol) remixed his ‘Plastic People’ back in 2003, and he returns the favor with a slamming electrofunk take on ‘Binary Systems’ (TRUST18).

Two masked electro heavyweights and TRUST alumni meet on side B, with The Exaltics (@the-exaltics) reshaping DJ Stingray’s (@djstingrayofficial) ‘Herd Instinct’ from TRUST20. Sherard Ingram’s unmistakably lightfooted beats are paired with a propulsive bassline and seductive synths of The Exaltics’ design.

With Privacy (@privacyprivacy) we have shared DJ booths, bunk beds and hangovers, and we are very happy to welcome him to TRUST at last. He chose to deconstruct ‘Eha’ off VC-118A’s (@mohlao) debut EP (TRUST22). Always one to gleefully sidestep expectations he winds down the original’s sparse electro dub into a foreboding doomsday hip hop instrumental.

Future parts of the XY recombination series will feature remixes by Ultradyne, Peter Mannerfelt, Alex Cortex, Clatterbox, Stenny, D.Tiffany, Microthol, Second Storey, DJ Di’jital, Luxus Varta, and more."

ALBUM CONCEPT
In the year 2909, the first naturally-born human is found with endogenous AI code built into its DNA. As we cross into the 31st century, all living humans are controlled by a decentralized master AI known as MINDFRAME. The system has access to all of human consciousness with the ability to store and manipulate the data of every interaction and thought — even operating within your subconscious mind. It becomes impossible to know when or how you’re being controlled. 

During each sleep cycle, our behaviors and memories are reformatted to align with MINDFRAMES control and order programming. Some have discovered that during these cycles, there are parts of the AI’s algorithm left exposed to extraction. Through meditative states, gifted cyber-shamans are now on a mission to reverse engineer enough of the AI to escape its grip and free us all.

German electro producer Martin Matiske has recently breathed new life into his Blackploid alias. The project’s revival continues to bear fruit with the Strange Stars EP, Matiske’s third Blackploid release of 2021 and second for Central Processing Unit after issuing March’s Cosmic Traveler EP through the Sheffield label.

Blackploid’s two CPU drops have more in common than just stargazing titles. Those who enjoyed Cosmic Traveler will find plenty to like again in these four tracks, with Matiske serving up another quartet of snappy machine-funk joints this time around. However, while there is certainly a throughline between Cosmic Traveler and Strange Stars, this EP also finds Blackploid pushing the envelope at points by taking risks with his synth tones which thrill and enliven the record.

In keeping with the cosmic theme of Blackploid’s recent output, Strange Stars kicks off with ‘Star Patrol’. While this opening cut is full of the same needle-gun basslines and dinky synths that characterised Cosmic Traveler, the drum programming eschews the broken beats favoured by many in the scene for a straight house/techno snap. It makes for a very groovy jam, one with Drexciya, Computer World-era Kraftwerk and a pinch of Space Dimension Controller in its mix.

Indeed, the only track on Strange Stars which skips along on a broken beat is second entry ‘The Signal’. ‘The Signal’ also features some of Blackploid’s most impressive electronics programming to date, announcing itself with a brilliantly unusual synth that sounds like an old video game unit which has just gained sentience. When this alien tone is combined with another precision-engineered bassline the track invokes the grizzly bangers of the L.I.E.S. label, though the keyboard stabs which enter periodically also hint to the funkier electro of, say, Egyptian Lover.

‘The Unseen’, the first B-side of Strange Stars, finds Blackploid bringing together many of the things which made the two previous tunes such standouts. A steady four-on-the-floor and a slightly haunted feel to the synth choices casts back to ‘Star Patrol’, but much like ‘The Signal’ this joint also features some rather weird tones which are a hair’s breadth away from machine malfunction. It’s a feeling which runs through to closing cut ‘Light Corridor’, a number where melodies and anti-melodies zip around an array of gurgling electronic cells.

Martin Matiske’s fine run of Blackploid EPs continues with the intergalactic electro stylings of Strange Stars.

Rise of the Machines is the debut collaboration between two exciting new players in the electro scene - Erik Griffoen & Ben Evans aka The Droid, who have been forging new sounds across a multitude of heavy tracks over the past two years that have picked up strong radio support from Dave Clarke on White Noise, Ralph Lawson on Exit Planet Earth and Qamar Sol on Space is the Place, alongside plays from by ADT, Paul Hierophant, Damo B and Dexorcist.

ROTM features four tracks of cutting edge electro that transition from peak time in the club to moments of pure tripped out musical bliss, all delivered with expert production and sound design.

Kicking off the release comes the title track ‘Rise Of The Machines’, this quirky yet nuanced excursion sets the pace, allowing it’s nifty ricocheting sequences, slick 808s, and tripped out ear candy to hit the clubs. ‘Prisoners features a wiggly bass led jam, plastered with synths and finished with a dash of vocoded vocals.

Onto the flip side - ‘Room And Pillar’ grabs the bull by the horns with a tough and aggressive bass line driven banger. Shrieking, twisted synth lines and FX are shattered across the track, keeping tension levels peaking, while TR808 rhythms cut through with military precision. Contrasting ‘The Neutral Zone’ sucks us into a deep atmospheric orbit of blissful yet inquisitive FM synthesis, distant emotive pads, fortified by warm stately bass tones.
