Many more followed and in 2005 I finally moved over, so I could go there every weekend. The club formed me as a DJ like no other.

The early years were the best. When music changed every year, trends were set, labels came and went, and each year seemed to be the best ever.

...one of my best festival experiences ever. Ricardo played for hours and hours, refusing to stop. Even when security took his headphones aways he was still playing another record and another record, and so on... Side note: This might be a fake set, done by a fan... It surfaced around 2006 on the forums of mnml.nl. Even today I am not quite sure if it is really Ricardo's set from back then, but it contains some "Ricardo signature tunes" for sure.

[fan mix!] Robert Johnson in Offenbach started out in 1999. Over the years it became one of the most important Clubs for House Music in Germany. My first visit was in 2001. Many more followed and in 2005 I finally moved over, so I could go there every weekend. This club and its music formed me as a DJ like no other.

Robert Owens broke away from home at a very young age to live in Chicago. He shared rooms with Frankie Knuckles and used to DJ from the late 1970s, long before his singing career started. In Chicago he got world famous as the lead singer of Fingers Inc., but still DJed every now and then. He never stopped, lived in New York and London during his 1990s solo success and still sings and lives the DJ live now - in Berlin. One of the real true legends of House Music!

It sure was unique though and had much more Funk than most outsiders thought...

Laurent Garnier ist nicht nur der dritte Pariser, der Ramona in diesem Monat beehrt, sondern auch der – mit Verlaub – sagenhafteste. Im Manchester der späten Achtziger hat es den begeisterten Musikliebhaber und damaligen Gastronomie-Azubi per Zufall hinter die Plattenteller eines namenslosen Clubs verschlagen, wo er den Hunger der anwesenden Meute mit allerlei Gedöns zwischen Abba und Zappa stillen musste. Nachdem er sich dort die Hörner abgestoßen hatte, folgte der nächste Club mit besserem Musikprogramm und auch heute noch klingendem Namen.
In der Hacienda durfte Garnier neben Mike Pickering und Graeme Park an dem Soundtrack einer Stadt Teil haben, die zwischen New Order und den Happy Mondays schlichtweg in afroamerikanische Tanzmusik verliebt war. So drehten die überspannten Clubkids umhüllt von der schwarz-gelben Nuklearästhetik des Clubs, Woche für Woche Pirouetten zu Songs von Carly Simon, Jomanda, oder dem FPI Project und Tracks von Adonis, Derrick May und DJ Pierre.
Zurück in Paris und derart geschult, wollte Laurent Garnier auch Frankreich den „Summer Of Love“ bringen. Einem Club namens „Wake Up“ und seinem nicht zu bremsenden Enthusiasmus sei Dank, sollte er nicht nur dieses Vorhaben in die Tat umsetzen, sondern auf dem Label FNAC bzw. F-Com Platten veröffentlichen, Techno in Frankreich installieren, mit seinem Plattenkoffer durch die Welt reisen und schließlich mit „Electrochoc“ ein Buch veröffentlichen, von dem sich einige DJ-Autoren ein Scheibchen abschneiden könnten. Eine der letzten wirklich großen DJ-Figuren unserer Zeit, dabei grundsympathisch und zwischen Techno und King Tubby auch noch musikalisch versiert wie kaum ein zweiter DJ. Was für ein homme du métier!

Jean Frank Cochois aka The Timewriter used many pseudonyms, the most underground ones probably being Jeremy and Drain Pipe. Like his buddy Terry Lee Brown Jr. he hails from beautiful Darmstadt and was always very underrated at home in Germany but valued as a master class producer worldwide.

He's a reborn christian now and he's still releasing House music on Vinyl. A real legend! 🙏

[fan mix] Probably the most ecstatic parties at Robert Johnson were "Hotel Scandalös" with Ricardo Villalobos. Contrary to common belief these were not 10 hour Minimal sessions, but nights full of variety, surprises and lost treasures out of (then) 20 years of electronic music history. 

This mix contains many, many tunes I heard my hero play. Quite a bunch of them actually in Feb. 2006 - maybe one of the best parties I ever went to. Some tunes I added for inspiration, but most are true-and-tested Ricardo hits.

...an epic 6.5 hour DJ set by legendary DJ Roy Thode at the even more legendary night club "The Saint" where dance music history was written. This is a special, so-called "morning music" set.

Quote from Tim Lawrence about this:
Robbie Leslie: "At around 6:00 AM, in a ritual that was not replicated in other venues, the DJ would let the final record of the peak set fade, accept applause from the crowd and acknowledge the work of the lighting person and the generosity of the crowd (if indeed the applause was enthusiastic, which wasn’t always the case). After that, the DJ would take the tempo right down and play a set that was commonly referred to as “sleaze” or “morning music”."

"As the night progressed, the tempo and intensity increased by tiny, nearly imperceptible increments until climaxing around 6 AM, when the DJ would stop the music and the still-sizeable crowd would applaud as if giving a Broadway cast their standing ovation.

Then the DJ would resume, but at a somewhat slower tempo, and in a more lyrical and romantic style known as “morning music.” In a morning music set, the tempo of the tracks might build again, but typically not their intensity. Instead, DJs programed morning sets to ease dancers off stimulants and take them down an ethereal, more relaxing and soulful path for several more hours. Then the jock would usually take another encore, henceforth playing what many call “sleaze.” Sleaze might be overtly sexual, like Skatt Bros.’ “Walk the Night,” but usually not; its foundation was openhearted R&B; songs of longing, or regret, or sorrow or unmitigated joy.

This misnomer – Leslie emphatically objects to it – was especially deceptive because quintessential “sleaze” selections like Sharon Ridley’s “Changin’” or Viola Wills’ “Somebody’s Eyes” ranked among the evening’s most sensitively arranged tracks. Even when club music lost much of its compositional sophistication as the decade progressed, a “sleaze” set always radiated class. "

Warren passed away very recently. I am devastated the Dance Music scene has lost such a big icon, so early. His legacy remains, his perfect transitions, his monolithic taste and seamless storytelling in his mixes - just perfect. Disco music and DJ culture lose one of their greatest, yet most humble figureheads.
