Over the last couple of years, Dutch artist Mitchel van Dinther has slowly but surely been picking up a cult following as Jameszoo. His releases on Rush Hour’s daughter label Kindred Spirits have been inventive affairs that marry jazz, electronica and hip hop aesthetics together into a fresh new style. In the club, he is a stellar DJ who already played Dekmantel Festival twice and paired up with The Gaslamp Killer. Next to that he is a performer who cooks up wholly improvised shows teaming up with the likes of Dorian Concept, Julian Sartorius, Binkbeats, and Gideon van Gelder while he also played together with The Roots frontman Questlove as part of the RBMA in New York. 

Jameszoo’s sound is curious and compelling and the world is keenly awaiting on his highly anticipated debut album. For a taster of what to expect, the Dutchman made a selection of recordings that inspired him in making his first LP.

Faitiche welcomes back an old friend: Andrew Pekler was the musical director of the 2011 album Ursula Bogner – Sonne=Blackbox (faitiche05 lp/cd/book). Known for his albums on Senufo Editions, Entr’acte, Dekorder, Kranky and other labels, Andrew Pekler’s new work Tristes Tropiques is now released by Faitiche. Tristes Tropiques is an album of synthetic exotica, pseudo-ethnographic music and unreal field recordings.

Jan Jelinek: You’ve titled your album Tristes Tropiques – a reference to Claude Lévi-Strauss’ famous account of his travels among native peoples in the Mato Grosso. If I remember correctly, the book can be read in two ways: as an ethnographic study of indigenous Brazilian tribes, and as a critique of anthropological methods. What exactly about Tristes Tropiques inspired you? The melancholy travelogue, or the formation of a new, critical school of thought?

Andrew Pekler: Both. Lévi-Strauss’ constant reflection on the purpose of his work and the often melancholy tone of his writing constitute an internal tension which runs throughout the whole book. Tristes Tropiques is many things; autobiography, traveler’s tale, ethnographic report, philosophical treatise, colonial history. But ultimately, it’s the author’s attempt to synthesize meaning from fragments of his own and other cultures that resonated most strongly with me – and led me to a new perspective on how I hear and make music. 

JJ: Listening to Tristes Tropiques I noticed a certain oscillation between references, which is what I really like about it. Obviously, your music alludes to the beloved fairytale kitsch of exotica, but it also repeatedly shifts to a mode of ethno-poetic meditation music that seems to have no beginning or end. Where do you yourself locate the tracks gathered here? 

AP: As a listener and as a musician, exotica music of the 1950s and 60s has always been a constant reference point and inspiration. And perhaps my listening has been ‘ruined’ by exotica, but as I have dug deeper into ethnographic archives of ‘traditional’ music, I’ve come to the realization that all recordings that evoke, allude to, or ostensibly document other musical forms have a similar effect on my imagination: I am most intrigued when I perceive some coincidentally familiar element within the foreign (a tuned percussion recital from Malawi that immediately brings to mind Steve Reichian minimalism, or the Burundian female vocal duet that sounds uncannily like a cut-up tape experiment, etc.). I suppose this album is an attempt to recreate the same kind of listening experience as what I’ve described, just with the electronic means that I have at hand. 

JJ: I know that you perform Tristes Tropiques not only as music, and that there is visual and spatial aspect to the presentation. Can you reveal more about this?

AP: I made an accompanying video – mainly close-up footage, shot in Thailand, of various tropical flora. The video was recorded at very slow speed and this gives the plants, flowers, trees, bamboo, etc. the appearance of rather abstract objects. In live performance, this abstracting effect is further emphasized through real-time modulation of the colors, brightness and other parameters of the video image. There is also an installation version of the video that is meant to be projected on multiple screens / walls and with its own soundtrack of heavily manipulated field recordings captured in the same locations in the jungle.  

JJ: We can get an idea of what this looks like from the beautiful video stills on the back cover of the album.

Move D & Dolan Bergin have a special bond. In between busy schedules the pair have become close friends.

There is little left to be said about David Moufang which has not already been spoken, his continued importance to club music makes him one of the definitive figures within the genre. Across decades he has released some of the most influential records in dance, his commitment to current trends and the ongoing discovery of new music is admirable. This is what to this day makes his DJ sets so profound and exciting. 

Dolan Bergin is the man behind Electric Minds, the much loved club night and label which has travelled the world. Based out of London the label is about to celebrate it's tenth anniversary, however we have now been informed that this will be the closing act for Electric Minds. Across the label's existence they have released music by the likes of Endian, Jay Shepeard, Fold and Move D himself. It's closure will be missed. 

This edition of the Ransom Note mix is taken from a party earlier this year at Robert Johnson in Germany. It sees label boss Dolan Bergin go back to back with Move D across six hours. Strap in.

Solid Steel (4th May) This week ahead of the AVA (Audio Visual Arts) festival in Northern Ireland from Fri 1st – Sat 2nd June, we welcome two of the artists playing, Sassy J and Jordan, who appear alongside Floorplan, Bicep, DVS1, Kink, Mall Grab, Denis Sulta, Midland and the legendary Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers. 

In Hour 1 we welcome  Sassy J who has a colourful and charming sound informed by her simple and honest love of music and emotion. She runs her own Patchwork night, does the art for each party and has a passion for sewing one off pieces of clothing that marry many different textures and styles in compelling ways, much like when she mixes records. She has also done artwork for Eglo and did an excellent cassette for The Trilogy Tapes. Sassy J has been passionately doing her do for 20 years now. In that time she has kept a focus on forward thinking electronic and analog sounds, has been a consistently exciting DJ and has earned a reputation amongst esteemed artists and fans that appreciate her unhurried style. Driven by a feel for the occasion, a passion to present new sounds and desire to leave a mark on her audience, Sassy J has played everywhere from Eglo Dance and Dekmantel to OHM and De School. She had this to say about her mix;
"I love to create sonic journeys through sounds, vibes and words. Setting moods, visiting places in the imagination, expressing my feelings and thoughts. I like to let the music speak for itself on the 90 minute ride. "
