Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I’m a very reserved and private person. Definitely on the “let the music speak for itself” vibe when it comes to my career but I also find myself applying that to every facet of my life the older I get. People are usually surprised when they meet me in person because they assume I’m more “out there”, which is hilarious to me. My real friends know I’m a big clown though haha.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. That’s honestly hard for me to answer personally. I was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Los Angeles but my first trip to NYC was in 2015. I came here already having a solid year+ of remote collaboration with Kush Jones and got to know a lot of people born and raised here. Since then people also assumed I’m from the Bronx, which I’ll gladly joke around with but I actually moved to there late 2017. For the first year living uptown people didn’t register that I was based in NYC because 98% of people in our music scene have never been to the Bronx. Once I moved to Brooklyn in 2019 it was a pretty aggressive upward trajectory. It’s always wild to remind myself the first time Kush and I played Bossa even was 2019.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. Recording this mix was a fluid expression of myself, how I listen to and experience music while high. The only prompt I gave myself was “what do I want to listen to on 420?” and I recorded it first try. I never go into DJing anything with a lot or if any preparation. The process of putting my mind to a subject, theme, type of crowd and space in the moment then going off that energy is such a release for me. Once I see the effects of those decisions on my end, I go on autopilot and the consistency of the outcome is secondary in my opinion.

If you ever need some creative inspiration, take a look at some videos of Timbaland in the studio in his prime, around the early to mid-2000s. You'll see Timbo smiling knowingly as he plays new material to some of the biggest rap & R&B stars of all time, all of whom appear to display a similar range of emotions – confusion, astonishment, befuddled laughter. 

This is testament to the Virginia producer's utterly genre shifting approach to the rhythm and texture of beat-making. No one sounded like him before, and the many who have imitated rarely reach his level.

This episode is a tribute to the Ranking Miss P (Margaret Anderson), who was one of the first female Black DJs in UK Pirate radio who inspired many women and was a huge influence to reggae's development in Britain. After the pirate radio days, Miss P went on to work closely with the BBC over the years, as a radio host, and as collaborator on documentaries.

Since the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd, there have been renewed efforts to shine a light on dance music's roots in Black communities. Still, there's a critical need for more Black-forefronted collectives and programmers—as well as more thoughtfully curated and balanced rosters of talent in clubs and festivals—to keep the origins of electronic music alive. 

In comes Brooklyn’s dweller festival, founded in 2019 by Discwoman's Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, which aims to highlight exclusively Black talent from across the globe. This year’s edition featured a live RA Exchange with Nigerian-British selector OK Williams, who spoke to RA music critic Kiana Mickles about some of the deep-rooted inequities that continue to bar Black artists from contributing to the contemporary dance music landscape. They also discuss Williams’ ascent on the global stage—beginning from her Early Bird residency at NTS and full-fledged touring career post-pandemic—and her first forays into production. This is a lively discussion that includes questions from the audience. Listen to the episode in full.

EX.652 dweller festival with OK Williams

Xzavier Stone has always made his influences known. A DJ, producer and vocalist hailing from Zurich, Switzerland, it has been the sounds of far-away scenes, like noughties-era US rap or regional club motifs, that he’s sought to channel in his own work – and way – via labels like Fractal Fantasy as well as his own imprint XZA.

It’s XZA that Stone returned to last month to share his second EP 'WHATZ UP', a slim three-tracker packed with his unique set of playful, slick sonic hallmarks. Here, it was the “evanescent era of Atlanta bass” that served as the heaviest of writing inspirations. 

So consider this a natural next step in his appreciation journey: an Atlanta bass specialist mix built with a forward-facing Xzavier Stone twist, shared in further homage to the melodic microgenre.
