K-Hand – Mixed by Russell E.L. Butler

If we were to pick one word to describe Ziggy Devriendt, AKA Nosedrip, it would probably humble. He runs a one-man empire out of the modest Belgian coastal town of Ostend, and his STROOM label is one of the most quietly brilliant outfits in Western Europe. A mixture of obscurer-than-obscure reissues and quirky new material makes for a label as unpredictable as it is essential, and Devriendt's unusual touch is all over it—he prefers to make up his own compilations and sequences instead of just repackaging old records, for example, which explains how important curation and putting songs together is to him.

So it's not a surprise that , in addition to being a music nerd supreme, Devriendt is also a remarkably good DJ, whose ear for oddball cuts translates well into intuitively danceable music. Judging from his RA Podcast, he's had trance on the mind—the mix features flighty beats that range from CJ Bolland and Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia to new-school practitioners like J-Zbel, plus a major highlight from Peter Van Hoesen that you might remember from Marcel Fengler's Berghain 05 mix and plenty of new material from Stroom. (He's also putting out a compilation of Belgian trance, which might explain the direction of this mix.) It's a three hour-ride that varies from jaw-dropping mixing to abrupt, almost shocking transitions that might startle you out of your chair.

With roots in Pittsburgh and a recent stint in Denver, Paul Fleetwood @fleet412 is both a beacon and a connector within the North American dance music community. A co-founder of Hot Mass with hands in events such as Honcho Campout, Lot Mass, VIA Festival, the Great American Techno Festival, and Humanaut, his DJ sets and productions blend a classic, grounded Midwest techno sensibility with a modern edge, always infused with emotion and sincerity. In 2021, Fleetwood launched his own label, Perimeter Junk, which has already cemented itself as a forerunner in predicting the next wave of dancefloor heaters for kind-hearted weirdos.

"I knew I wanted a mix that featured mostly four-on-the-floor music, upbeat but smooth and not too aggressive. I imagined a much deeper and more emotive mix than what I originally intended but that didn’t make me any less happy with how it turned out.

This was recorded Saturday, October 8th, 2022 at my apartment in Denver, CO. I used two XDJ-700s and a A&H Xone:92 rotary mixer. I compiled a playlist of roughly nine hours of music from which to choose. Experimenting from that list, it took around seven takes to nail a flow that felt right.

The interview questions brought Molly Nilsson’s 'Never Coming Home' to mind so I decided to include it. I couldn't come up with a smarter way other than to place it as an encore so there ya go, my creative apex at work."

"As a DJ, I have been more and more interested to play more percussive based tracks, giving me more freedom to navigate genres. But recently, I have got the chance to muscle up my game a bit more on some techno dancefloors, and I really enjoy playing with this kind of energy. Derek Plaslaiko at No Way Back May 29, 2022, night 2 of Return to the Source, a weekend at The Tangent. In his own words: “This was our first in-person NWB since before the pandemic hit. So, just that alone makes the whole night special. It was just SO amazing to have everyone in the same room again, going crazy to all these monster sets that everyone played. When I would look out from the stage, you could just see that *everyone* was moving, sweating and/or screaming for more. They were smiling and laughing and just so happy to be around people again. Specifically *these* people. The ones who come every single year and lose their minds alongside everyone else, without even thinking twice if they're going to go to the party, or not. I think everyone *needed* that party, myself included. There's just nothing else like it. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful we were able to do it over the internet during those lonely times, but there really is no proper substitute. And while this might not be the tightest set I've ever played, I think it got the job done. So, enjoy!! :)”

Here at Dekmantel we are a big fan of Berlin based Brit Objekt. Evidence: you will see him play our festival in Amsterdam as well as Lente Kabinet, and then Dekmantel Selectors in Croatia. And right now, the man known for his unrivalled technical nous is in a fine run of form. His recent, self-released EP is another testament to his ability to skew house, techno and breaks into his own imaginative forms. Following on from releases on Hessle Audio, Bleep and an album on PAN, it is another boon in his fine discography. 

And he is just as impressive across a 90 plus minute selection for us: it finds him serving up a cavernous world of intricate and hi fidelity sounds that are abstract and unusual. Moving through sparse minimal soundscapes into pummelling but atmospheric drum tracks and on to jungle, dub and experimental worldly rhythms, it is a wildly compelling and singular selection filled with unusual sounds that often leaving you wondering WTF?!

Dekmantel Podcast 116 - Objekt

Freerotation Festival (a.k.a. the highlight of every year a.k.a. the four best dancefloors on the planet) was on top form this year – it's always a total joy to play and spend the weekend there and I'm really happy to share the recording of my set. I was playing second-to-last on Sunday night in Room 1, between XDB and Sebastian Mullaert, so I figured I'd leave out the drastic tempo shifts and just have A LOAD OF FUN keeping the party going instead, maybe coaxing out a couple of end-of-festival tears in the process.

If you were there then millions of thanks to you, there's no bunch of people I'd rather play to (or hang out with) and I've spent the last 3 days wishing I could go back. Hope you've managed to get through the last few days without almost weeping at the coffee machine. (I've had no such luck.)

Our next mix series contributor needs little introduction. A third of Hessle Audio, alongside Ben UFO and Pearson Sound, Pangaea has been an essential fixture of the electronic music scene for over a decade. Whether through releases on Hessle’s influential imprint, or as a distinctive and celebrated DJ in his own right - Pangaea is undoubtedly a huge player in shaping the characteristic UK club sound.

Similarly as influential a character at Dimensions, Pangaea has appeared at every single festival since our inception in 2012. Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate. So in case you missed the official broadcast – or wanted a download – here it is.
