Our first mix of 2023 has enough raw power to push a steamboat up a mountain. It's bracing, cold, and ultimately tender. Big love to Sam Clarke, a Brooklyn-based artist working within photography, design, music, and event curation. He is the co-founder of Dust Radio and the now-defunct rave series Nausea. 

“In thinking about the myth of the Capricorn, I playfully imagined myself to be a roughly bearded goat, scaling a massive and precarious mountain with icy wind scorching my face and reaching the peak above the clouds to finally see the sublime curvature of the earth.”

Varg2™ — I en oändlig sorg / Jörn

@varg, Swedish producer and co-founder of @northernelectronics, is known for his anti-techno punk approach towards the heavily techno-focused scene he is a big part of. @varg easily connects dots between field recording, pianists, rappers, painters, poets, german shepherds, old tapes and his IPad apps. Whether playing DMs from Chloe Wise to the throbbing beats and splashing champagne at @herrensauna or wondering among imaginary woods on stage with @annamelina, @varg is hungry for experiments and immune to taking himself too seriously. In our borshch #2, @varg appeared with FLORA as a co-curator of @berlinatonal 2018.  

For his borshch mix dedicated to our current Sound Mind theme, @varg was drawing inspiration from "his teenage years, wanting to die and stuffing himself with benzos." In our current print issue we tried to prove that though from the early age our ears are conditioned for contentment and pleasant sounds, contentment does not lead to enlightenment. And here comes @varg: never willing to please, always eager to confront.

Norrskensflamman – roughly “the northern lights flame” was a communist newspaper of Luleå that in 1940 suffered a sinister and cowardly attack. Their only crime was fostering a dream of a better world. A fairer world built on camaraderie, equality and peace. Only to see it go up in flames. 

Using an explosive charge fitted to the printing press, a violent fire broke out leaving five people dead. Among them two children. Devoured by the flames in a wicked blaze of a bizarre aurora borealis. In the subsequent investigation a conspiracy emerged, consisting of soldiers, officers and a journalist colleague, but shockingly also the local chief of police. Varg2™ bestows upon us an homage to Norrland, an album embracing collaborations with local abilities, driving spirits and heroes of the north. Varg2™’s bright and brilliant flame continues to enlighten and lead the way like a lantern for the feet – a pole star for the mind.
