Mixes - Diggin In The Crates

DJ Offbeat, Chris Galvan, and OdDio end the decade by taking a look back at some of the Labels and Artists that have influenced us, inspired us, and led us to where we are today.

We examined Compost Records, Jazzanova, Schema Records, 4 Hero, and Especial Records in December.  We started the year off right with a look at Scandinavian Jazz.  This week we turn our attention to Italian jazz maestro Nicola Conte.

The swinging jazz sounds of Nicola Conte first entered my world in the form of the Schema Records album 'Jet Sounds'.  A modern take on bossa, the groove based tunes flowed one after another until the final notes of 'Trappola Mortale' faded into silence.  I ached for more and immediately began the journey again.  The audience widened a bit in America with the Eighteenth Street Lounge re-release, renamed 'Bossa Per Due' and a full remix album aptly titled 'Jet Sounds Revisited'.  

The remixes flowed, as did my love of these dancefloor jazz sounds.  Taking a more pure jazz tone, Nicola Conte and his band recorded 'Other Directions' in 2004 for Blue Note.  Conte returned to his home at Schema Records with 2008's 'Rituals'.  Late in 2009, Schema released a double album of collected remixes from over the years under the name 'The Modern Sound of Nicola Conte: Versions In Jazz Dub' and the journey continues.

I was fortunate enough to catch a DJ set at Sonotheque in Chicago in late 2003, where I enjoyed the fine selections of Mr Conte, as well as an excellent conversation and more than a few drinks with the man himself.  Chris and his lovely wife came for a visit late last year and we all took in the live band, featuring Nicola on guitar and the one Jose James on vocals.  Needless to say, they brought the house down.

Nicola Conte Special January 2010 DJ Offbeat & Chris Galvan

A couple years ago I was hanging out at a friend's house when I came across his box set of the complete Stax singles from 1959-1968.I knew a little bit about the label, that it was sometimes called a "southern Motown" and that it had a pretty deep catalog of soul music, but I was far from an expert. The thought occurred to me that I should make a mixtape from all those songs. It seemed like a simple enough idea at the time.
To keep the project from getting out of hand, I stuck with those early years, when Isaac Hayes was just a low-profile songwriter behind the scenes and the Staple Singers were an unsigned gospel family touring churches in Chicago. I started with some of the obvious hits, the Otis Redding and Sam &amp; Dave classics that helped define soul music. From there I had to pay tribute to a few of the samples that are instantly recognizable to hip hop fans of my generation. 
But that was just the start of things.There were too many funky drum breaks, classic guitar riffs, and haunting lyrics to just leave it at that.Pretty soon I was embracing all of it: the sentimental love songs, the uptempo burners, the down-home blues, even the cheesy novelty dance songs. The more I sank my teeth into the music, the more intricate the mix became. I finally decided to throw everything I had into the pot: scratching, mixing, layering elements on top of each other, original production, session players, and bringing in K.nightshift (of The Dime) and Bink$ Win$ton to put the icing on the cake with their vocals. (Little did I know just how far they would knock it out of the park--if you don't believe me, check what they did with "Green Onions.") This mix was partly inspired by conversations about music on my front steps with the guys, so to bring it full circle we got together at the end and parlayed about the music and the era while the recorders ran.
So here it is, the product of so many late nights behind the turntables and in the studio. I've asked myself many times while I was putting it together if it was too soft, too hard, too dated, too out there, too sappy, too vulgar for people to "get" it.Then again, who cares.

Some of the records I got at the DC Record Fair 1/27/2013

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, I Love Rock n’ Roll. It was $1 and the cover and vinyl are very good. You’ll find a lot of this record because it had her big hit and had numerous pressings. I have another terrific LP of hers, Bad Reputation, so it needed some company. This album brings a lot of memories back of roller-skating and Donkey Kong. 

Cal Tjader, Soul Sauce. This is the record to have of vibitist Cal Tjader. His latin rhythms and jazz is infectious. This is an original Verve release and the cover is that folded gloss paper over cardboard with the original Verve logo paper sleeve inside. The vinyl is thick and glossy... yummy. I real find for $5!

Wild in the Streets, Original Movie Soundtrack. I already have copy of this record but it was only $5 and sometimes it’s good to have a spare. This record is made up of songs that the fiction band in the movie plays in order to rally the youth to take over the US government and force everyone over 30 to take acid--it’s a wild flick. It’s a lovely gatefold cover with vignettes of the stars and scenes from the movie, an incredible conflux of genre ephemeral. 

Etta Jones, Don’t Go to Strangers. When I used to work at Olsson’s Book and Records every time we put on this CD we sold copies. It’s nice to have an LP version even it is a little ruggedy. It’s an early pressing and the cover has, as I like to say, “Seen a lot of parties.” But damn it’s such a good set of music and musicians and despite the cover damage, and the old vinyl, the music shines through. And it has the original Prestige Records paper sleeve--a mandala of records. 

The Bubblemen are Coming! The Bubblemen were the short-lived alter-egos of Love and Rockets. It’s frankly kind of esoteric at this point, although I can remember the video of them rolling around in weird bee suits like a kids show. The Bubblemen Rap with it’s chaotic genre splitting defiance is a joy to spice up the end of a mix. The vinyl is in great shape and still has the shrink wrap with a Waxie Maxies price tag of $3.79 on it, I got it for a dollar. Awesome. 

Rich Versus Roach, Drummer Buddy Rich and Max Roach in a Battle Royale. What a find! As a drummer I am hugely influenced by both Buddy Rich and Max Roach and in fact keep a photo of Max Roach in my rehearsal space for inspiration. I’ve had this on CD but never on vinyl before. It’s a dynamic and special set, especially the way they separated the drummers into left and right speakers, so you can really hear their individual sounds. This is the original Mercury pressing, wrapped gloss paper on cardboard, original paper sleeve, yay! It is in very good shape, the vinyl has some warm subtle pops and adds to the general gestalt. But do I file it under  Roach or Rich?!

Piano Music of Erik Satie Volume 1, Aldo Ciccolini. This was the Satie record I grew up with. This is how I hear Satie’s Trois Gymnopedies--staring at the the Picasso drawn Satie on the cover, with the light subtle hum and warmth and the gentle dissonance of a needle pulled across vinyl. It’s the perfect record to stare out the window and watch a wintry mix devour natures empty spaces.
