While in some old hard drives cleaning house , I discovered that some past self, one a lot less jaded than I am now, had carefully saved .mp3 -- or in some cases even .aif-- versions of LOTS and LOTS of my Leapster game music. These are all background loops I made back in the early early days of first-gen Leapster. Some are nearly 10 years old.
I remember how diligent me and Mark Bartscher were...We could have settled for porting a generalized set of samples onto the baserom, but no...we had to make sure the audio engine had the capability to extend the instrument set to the cart each time, for nearly each individual title, to be able to include some kitty meow instruments for games starring cats, some synths that were a little more complex than just a square or sawtooth wave for our arcade titles, some percussion variety, something that sounds like a gamelan but I can't remember what it was exactly now... all kinds of different hand-built sample sets. In these BGMs I even adjusted layers of decreasing velocity in repeated notes to imitate BPM-synced delay effects (no DSP in midi). I can't believe I was so precious about these. 
Listening back to some of them, I can't believe that they let me get away with so much
beepy electronica in games for toddlers. I hope they make you laugh out loud like I did.

stupidface sent me his now-completed .mid for Snowmiser last night at 2AM. It was a massive undertaking of his, and we'd both been looking forward to seeing its fruition since late November or so. Now, pretty much exactly 12 hours after he sent me that, here's what I've done with it since.

When I got this, there were a couple (admittedly very quiet) notes missing from a couple brass chords, the Big Brass Bend starts at 2 semi-tones down, not a mere 20 cents-- this is because the way it's structured there is supposed to be the D-F#-G scale, then the D-F#-G scale *again* as a sliding movement instead of individual notes". 
Most unfortunately, though, the Dick Shawn brand syncopation and general whimsy was missing (not to mention the "translate a talky sound to actual notation" bit he did for the imps at the very end kinda sucked).
So, today, I have not only arranged this MIDI, but I've also given the melody a bit of an overhaul. The end result is quite possibly the closest there's ever been to (an arrangement of) a transcription of the original Snowmiser tune.

After writing all that, I of course sound like a douche. I am, but more to the point; I love how faithful the instrumentation is as a whole, in particular the piano and banjo finally being put to paper is fab. Not sure if the banjo is actually a rhythm section or what, but it sounds correct to me ears, so I don't care. I'm proud of him, of what we've both accomplished with this, hey sugarplum how'd ya make out with the hotheaduser-2010515242737263393
