Amy Douglas should need no introduction, having supplied song-writing and vocal duties for Horse Meat Disco, Roisin Murphy, Luke Soloman and Soul Clap.

Here she teams up with Craig Bratley who dusts off the analogue synths to produce something which clearly wears its influence on its sleeve, taking in elements of Balearic, Street Soul and early Sheffield Bleep.

On the Ashagaru Dub, Craig explores these influences further, the result reminiscent of Mad Professors take on Massive Attack.

Perfect Sunday listening and another chillout selection for the latest Sunset Lovers are coming from the UK-based DJ, producer, and Magic Feet Label boss, Craig Bratley. 

Craig Bratley is renowned for his contributions to the underground house, disco, and Balearic music scenes. His non-conformist approach to production and DJ sets him apart from traditional club music, making him a highly esteemed figure in the club scene.

Craig's passion for music developed at a young age. While most of his peers were raised on their parents' collection of soul, funk, and disco records, Craig’s upbringing was more influenced by Barry Manilow than Barry White. His first introduction to electronic music was 80s electro, and a few years later, he discovered Acid House. 

His love for music led Craig to pursue DJing and eventually venture into the world of music production. This transition allowed him to fully immerse himself in his craft and create impactful work. Over the years, Craig has been developing his knowledge and skills, and with each release, he has enhanced his reputation as a producer. His work spans across respected labels such as Futureboogie, Tone Dropout, Bird Scarer, Throne of Blood, Tsuba, Instruments Of Rapture, Suara, Is It Balearic, Leng, Claremont 56, and To Rack and Ruin, to name a few.

Craig’s releases have been supported by many of the most respected DJs and producers such as Andrew Weatherall, Ewan Pearson, Marvin and Guy, Justin Robertson, Phil Mison, Jennifer Cardini, Gerd Janson, Peace Division, DJ Sneak, Groove Armada, X-Press 2, Rob da Bank, Toby Tobias, Optimo and many more.

Those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern Balearica should know all about Layne Fox, a San Francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 Thieves.

The Bay Area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on Rong Music and Leng, who released their expansive debut album The Sky Is Yours back in 2014.

Now, Fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on Magic Feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005’s Move Me under the Tuffy alias. It’s something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy Italo-disco and horizontal pop.

Fox delivers two contrasting versions of No Runnin’ Away. There’s a Vocal Mix, where Sunny’s icy, atmospheric voice drifts over a chugging mid-tempo groove built around a Moroder-style bassline, swirling electronics, dreamy chords and metronomic beats. Typically, Fox also provides a tasty Dub, where select vocal snippets drift in an out of a delay and reverb heavy mix that also gives increased prominence to his stretched-out synths and late night electronics. 

Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley handles remix duties himself, offering a complimentary but notably different interpretation. His version subtly emphasizes the track’s downbeat pop credentials, pushing the vocal to the fore above a sparse electro groove, dreamy pads and flashes of acid-inspired electronics. Think Cold Wave vibes but with actual production values, not pretend ‘mastered on cassette’. It’s the perfect accompaniment to Fox’s hypnotic, head-in-the-clouds original.

Returning from the Italian excursion of Vol. 13 before the U.K. pulls up the proverbial drawbridge, @neildiablo delivers another To Rack & Ruin winner live and direct from the Northern powerhouse. Showing some love for the finerhalf of the county, Neil presents the best the North East has to offer, enlisting ‘Our friends from the north’Yorkshire's Craig Bratley and Newcastle's James Hadfield to do the damage on this slick split 12".
After a relatively quiet 2016, Mr Bratley shuffles his Magic Feet into the studio and sticks his fist directly into the mainframe, coming back with a pair of strangely psychedelic body movers to decorate the A-side. 'Ani Kuni' bursts out the blocks in a swell of fizzing sequencer, throbbing bass and tonking mid tempo percussion, sparking away wildly like a Tesla toothbrush. An East-meets-West affair, the track marries the thrusting electronics of Krautrock with lightly spiced Indian vocals and hippie guitar licks, conjuring visions of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi gurning away at a Faust show. Bratley retains the propulsive percussion for A2 number 'Acid Mother', syncing gurgling synth bass beneath loose funk guitars and warbling lead lines as we're slowly sucked through the wormhole. As the track chugs ceaseless through Baldelli's cosmic terrain, rhythmic chants and rubbery bass solos reverberate through the vacuum, locking us into their other worldly gravity. Resistance is futile.
We head up the A1 for the flipside, hooking up on the toon with Elizabeth Collective mainstay James Hadfield, who serves up two reheated treats tastier than your last parmo! Wielding the white stiletto and sweet sequinned shimmer, Hadfield lets loose his disco juice on "Love And Affection", chucking some dreamy Gamble & Huff vocals over a dope and dusty groove. Crackling like a campfire cookout, this infectious cut spits out slick bass, dubbed out guitar and precise percussion, keeping your body in motion while the piano noodle and soulful vocal swirl through your brainspace. Things take a turn for the technologic on "Silent Builder", those organic disco licks replaced by swelling sine waves, soaring siren calls and military breakbeats. The punchy bassline provides a steady hand as the track gradually pulls itself apart, unravelling into squelching synth wobbles, oddball samples and proggy solos.
Wonderfully wonky, this is music for when the walls start to melt. Four freaky cuts from two top talents - To Rack & Ruin for the win.

Iain is perhaps known best as Funky Transport and has released records on labels such as 20/20 Vision, Playhouse, Classic, Chez and Brique Rouge.
Steve preciously ran The Ten Lovers Music label , has released records as Community Housin’ and was also resident at Manchester Deep House night ‘Hot Water Music’.

Stalwart of the scene, Craig Bratley, serves up big Italo flavours all over the “99.9% EP”, ably backed with a remix from Mr. Andrew Weatherall.
With previous releases on Neil Diablo’s To Rack & Ruin, Tsuba, Is It Balearic? and Robsoul Recordings, Bratley’s Futureboogie debut opens with the searing synths and chugging arped bass of “99.9%”. Wide-eyed melodies and punchy drums demand a mirror ball moment to this fabulous cut.
Family favourite, Andrew Weatherall, takes the chugging tempo to new depths, remolding “99.9%” into a tense, reverb soaked, dubbed out sci-fi encounter.
Further explorations into space disco are to be found on “Italo Love” with luscious waves of thick analogue sound and planetary FX, whilst on “Take Me To Bedford Or Lose Me Forever”, distinct Asian influences are at play, as Bratley channels his inner Vangelis for a mesmerizing and cinematic piece.
