A mix of musical gems in a culturally rich era for Brazil that gave rise to diverse musical styles that include Afro Samba, dreamy jazz Percussion to Bossa Funk. A look at the lesser-known artists such as Ely Camargo and Vox Populi to icons Gilberto Gil and Tom Zé who helped define the cultural movement Tropicália through their unorthodox approach to melody. 1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

My name is Jake, I like to go by the name _jakemo. It's not too far off from my original aol email. Don't forget the underscore because it accentuates the _j. I'm an DJ and a Chicago native. In my neighborhood, I'm extremely lucky to have 4 top notch records stores all within about 1.5 miles from my house (Wild Prairie Vinyl & Vintage, Dusty Groove, Shuga Records, & Reckless Records) so that makes collecting records a lot easier. If planned accordingly, it's possible to hit all 4 in a 2.5 mile round trip bike ride. 

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

My record collection didn't start with 45s, it started with LPs, then panned out to 45s. It consists of nearly a bit of every genre from Odetta next to Con Funk Shun next to Donald Byrd next to Twista. I started collecting 45s more and more over time. Right now I probably have over 400 45s if i had to guess, but I would say only about 150-200 actually get put to use arranged by BPM The reason I love the 45 rpm or 7" record is not that easy to explain.There are many reasons like; they may or may not spin at a higher RPM, they're more portable, they make you use more touch, they may or may not need an adapter, they may be pristine or scuffed like work shoes, and probably my favorite part is they're only 1-2 songs (for the most part) which means to me that each side has it's own personality and they're "two-faced" on the A side & the B side. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

This hour mix I made during the co-vid 19 lockdown, and it was just how I was feeling at the time. I really just try to groove with it, feel it out, and figure out what goes well together as I mix. I might plan a few things ahead of time but most of it is just vibing. 

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

At this moment with no bars or restaurants open, people can catch me spinning daily on Twitch at 1pm CST twitch.tv/jakemo8642. Sometimes I may change the start time but I always update on my Instagram story @_jakemo. My mixes are available on MixCloud at mixcloud.com/_jakemo/.

Ah, my top 5 all-time favorite records....to me, this is the hardest part of writing this.
