Juana Molina - Un Día

Our guest for this 6th episode is Yasmine Hamdan, the stellar Paris-based artist from Lebanon. She’s prepared a fascinating mix for us, featuring a selection of tracks from her collection of rare cassettes from all over the Arab world (Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Iraq etc), many of them from the ‘80s and earlier. Yasmine’s “Jamilat Reprise”, a collection of reconstructions of tracks off her latest album “Al Jamilat”, is due to drop in early June 2018. Among these reworks is Cubenx’s remix of “K2”, which appears in the 1st hour of this show. 

The show’s initial 50 minutes is a mix by Marc Hollander entitled ‘Crammed By Numbers’, consisting of tracks from the label’s catalogue which all contain numbers in their titles.

Inside & Around Crammed #6: Yasmine Hamdan

Our guest this month is Acid Arab’s Guido Minisky, playing a wide-ranging selection of gems from his collection, with tracks spanning no less than 60 years (the oldest is from 1958) and originating from Hungary, Colombia, Japan, Somalia, the UK, Algeria, Spain, France… 

The 2nd part of the show is an ‘Oriented’ mix by Marc Hollander (the title is a tribute to Guido’s own radio show), including tracks from the Crammed catalogue which all bear a real or imaginary relationship to “The East”.

Inside & Around Crammed #12: Guido Minisky (Acid Arab)

Chilean/French duo Nova Materia have just released their debut album on Crammed. Their powerful, hypnotic music incorporates eerie sounds generated by raw and mineral materials (metal, rocks etc) to create tracks that are in turn hyper-rhythmical and dreamy, poised between post-punk rock and electronic dance music. Here’s how they describe what they’ve prepared for us today: "An eclectic mix of music from avant garde to techno, from unclassified genres to contemporary dance music and from everywhere in the world.  Many of the artists we’ve included in this mix have been referential to us. We had the pleasure to spend a couple of hours this weekend inviting them all to live together in a downtempo DJ set on top of which we added some live organic and mineral percussions. For the pleasure of you ears and psyche" (NM)

Inside & Around Crammed #13: Nova Materia

Marc performed his very first ‘augmented DJ set’ at the latest edition of the Meakusma festival, in the Dublab Sleepless Floor space. Consisting exclusively of Crammed Discs tracks, it included excerpts from upcoming releases, several work-in-progress bits from the next Aksak Maboul album, found sounds… a serious mashup with several tracks playing simultaneously, plus added beats , lots of tweaks and a bit of keyboard playing on top… A lot of fun was had, and this epic performance definitely deserves being aired in the context of this program. 
The second part of the show (starting around 1:05:00) contains a few of Marc’s favourite 20th century contemporary classical tracks.

Inside & Around Crammed #14: Marc Hollander’s 'augmented' DJ set @ Meakusma

To celebrate the release of his new album “Two Roomed Motel”, Californian artist Scott Gilmore has done a special mix for us, which he describes as follows:

“The songs on this mix are a wide range of influences that have shaped the music I make. I was introduced to some of them years ago and others are new discoveries. I still find a lot of inspiration in all of them.” 

He’s been described as a “bedroom pop experimentalist” (Stereogum), his music drew comparisons to Stereolab, Air and R.Stevie Moore… and early reviews of the new album mention that it “sounds like some parallel-universe collaboration between Brian Eno and electro-jazz innovator Raymond Scott… with wistful Arthur Russell-like sighs… and a Satiesque chamber-glitch piano piece” (Uncut).
