When to listen: When the fuck ever you need a groove baby

Things can often seem so serious. Life is shrouded with responsibility and social accountability. It’s important to escape this sometimes, so delve into an hour-long bombardment of colourful, joyful and silly disco dancing.

Henri is here to fill the gap that Bellaire has left (at the very least his moustache says so). He has been disco dancing around the Toon for several years now,  rocking residencies at Groovy Disco Tech, Wheel Up and Flipside 52. He’s supported artists like La La, Oflynn, Krystal Klear, DJ Q, HAMMER and more. 

An extremely talented producer, he has been loading original tunes into the decks at shows all semester. They’re mostly unreleased, so you’ll need to get on the lookout for Cramsie to hear what he is cooking up. He's on closing duties back-to-back with Matty Jones at Flipside this week, with some big things planned in 2023.  

Last time out we explored how music can be an avenue for feeling calm, something we all need. But equally as nourishing as the feeling of calm, is the feeling of being connected. We are social animals, and play is a fundamental component of the collective human experience. We all need play.  It encourages us to form new bonds. It teaches us how to enjoy the unpredictability of life. It inspires creativity. It manifests love.

The mix is smooth, uplifting and, most importantly, fun. The music pulls you into the groove, avoiding becoming too technical or complex. The tracks are layered wonderfully, with looping drums and rich grooves that stretch over extended periods that get your toes tapping.

“I think disco is minimal in a sense,” he says. “But it keeps you hooked somehow.”  Recorded to a live audience, the mix preserves its authenticity. Henri said he wanted it to be a live set to emphasise its playfulness because it is necessary to feel free and spontaneous. The mix lifts the tempo slowly, inviting you onto the dance floor without pushing the energy too quickly. This is where the magic of disco lies, in its universal accessibility. It’s such an entertaining and flirtatious genre that nothing else could capture the essence of playfulness quite like it.

In the 80s, disco was forced into the underground in America, a consequence of a somewhat racially charged movement to squash Motown and reignite the rock scene, it was the gay clubs that continued the sound. The reason for this is that these clubs, such as the Music Box in Chicago, provided a place where people could feel free and express themselves, away from judgemental and prejudiced eyes. Only one type of music was joyous enough, accessible enough, sexy enough, and freeing enough. Disco is the perfect vessel for freedom of expression and so, alongside a rapidly emerging genre called House, it lived on.
A lot of dance music takes itself too seriously. There is a different kind of enchantment in that kind of music, it can be emotionally charged and political, but the beauty of funk and disco is that it wants nothing to do with this. It just wants to make you feel good. It wants you to forget all the problems of the world and force you to dance. This mix is the essence of this feeling and a pleasure for your ears.
