Innsyter / 2Morph - 7" Sampler (Snippets)

Echoes of time sees the return of XVARR, this time to Good Morning Tapes' vinyl imprint, with extended versions of two workings from GMT13 (Serpent Power). Using sounds from early (circa 1992) experiments with metal, Past Masters captures a feeling of youthful anger and perhaps purity (or naivety). Reference to past masters is used to highlight the need to juxtapose present iterations of Self with the vitality of previously discarded versions. Also appearing on Serpent Power (GMT13) in an edited form and composed in 2018, the title track Echoes of Time was created using the Buchla Music Easel. The intended mood is one of serenity and perhaps even hope, with a view to create the sonic means by which one may transcend the trappings of linear time.

These tracks are joined by two other workings: She Healed Him in Her Sleep (originally planned for CD release in 2009), was composed after an extended trip to India, which left a profound impression on XVARR’s later creative pursuits. It explores the restorative dimension of love and the mystical role of sleep. And finally, Terminal Manoeuvre layers an improvised wistful melody over an ambient drone, designed to instil a sense of nostalgia and longing for respite from this terrestrial bondage.

With artwork from Egypte Erotique, the release is limited to 250 copies.

Schleswig-Holstein is a thin land bridge between the mighty hull of the North German lowlands and the long pointed head of the Jutland peninsula, with the gentle Baltic Sea on one side, and the rough North Sea on the other. Numerous lakes, deciduous forests and wide corridors have shaped this region since its formation during the last ice age. The varied landscape, covered with fertile clay and littered with countless large and small granite blocks, is the legacy of the glaciers.

Fascinated by the cultural and geographical history of his homeland, Phil Struck recorded sonic impressions after hikes, wanderings, daydreams, historical readings and childhood memories. Schleswig-Holstein Aufnahmen is the distillation of these diaristic recordings, made between 2017 and 2019, using a sampler, synthesizer, and worn flea market records. Much like the cyclical musings of W.G. Sebald, or Cluster’s pastoral electronic miniatures, these works are intrinsically tied to the landscape of which they were born. The wobble and crackle of the samples is evocative of the craggy scenery of the lowlands, and also describes the patinated atmosphere of memory, found in the work of Vladislav Delay, Pole, Caretaker, Philip Jeck, Ken Jacobs, and Bill Morrison. The painting adorning the album cover was done by Struck’s great grandfather who was also seduced by this meandering windswept land.

Phil Struck - Baizubai (21SC)

Ralph Cumbers makes a very welcome return to Slip with the sweet drive and unguarded lyricism of 'Orezero': a smiling-through-the tears chaser to 2019's majestic '111 angelic MIDI cascade'.

Says Clef:

"'Orezero' is both the prequel and sequel to '111 Angelic MIDI Casacde' in that I'm not sure which ones is Wonderland and which one is through the Looking Glass. So it can stay unresolved as both and neither? Feels like a strange time to be releasing what might be the most joyous Bass Clef record. Certainly 'One Tree Island' and 'Heavy Lifting Light Wave' are two cuts of happiness, but the kind of happiness that acknowledges and incorporates all the unhappiness that came along the way. Other tracks are a more rarefied kind of joy I guess, I find myself stripping back layers on these tracks to an extent I never would have dreamed was possible for me.

These tracks were recorded in 2019 over quite some time, although each track itself takes no more than 3-4 hours and are recorded live. Editing clears the clutter to reveal the intent, not always obvious at the time of recording. I was pushing myself, again, to focus on harmony, and melody, the two things I think I am worst at, rather than returning to rhythm and texture, the playgrounds I always felt most comfortable in.

Instrument restrictions helped as always – most of the sounds heard are from two ROMplers, much-loathed relics of pre-computer music, loaded with largely un-tweakable samples of acoustic instruments, samples you have heard on a billion records, but hopefully stacked in new combinations this time around. Backed up with Microkorg, a resolutely and extremely popular, yet deeply uncool, digital synthesizer.

The tracks here were originally intended for two different records (maybe that’s why the prequel/sequel feeling persists) but thanks to excellent old school A&R in the form of an evolving conversation with Laurie from Slip, together we eventually uncovered one record that I think manages to weave all these threads together. I hope it will bring some smiles to some people."

Similar to how a sample can be used as a foundation to build up a track, &apos uses algorithmic processes as the main source for his creations. Whether they are in the form of stochastic randomness or artificial neural networks, he sculpts his music out of inherent chaos. 'Git Sanctuary' entails eight tracks developed between 2014 and 2020, all created using self-written software.
As a key member of Brussels’ Bepotel collective/label, &apos makes music that veers between abstract, experimental compositions and more beat driven tracks, all held together by a defined aesthetic that welcomes and indeed makes a virtue of sonic impurities and random patterns.
Building upon his time studying Sonology at The Hague’s Royal Conservatory, &apos’s sample based music is as likely to reference the work of artists exploring the realm of abstract electronics like Helena Gough and Oval as it is contemporary electronic producers such as Actress, Madteo, Terrence Dixon & Huerco S.
Much of the software created by &apos and used for Git Sanctuary got lost over the years. The remaining tracks are souvenirs of these long strings of vanished code, now only revealing through their auditory form. They gather on Git Sanctuary, an album which gives tribute to the code behind these manifestations and honours their impossible longing for a safe home in a git repository somewhere in the cloud.
