About Folkatron Sessions

Folkatron Sessions are a collective of 8 folk, jazz and electronic musicians from England, Ireland and France who bonded over a love of ‘genre-bending’ [Folk Radio UK] folk music. Their ‘unique soundscape’ [Songlines Mag] refracts trad folk through electronic, jazz, ambient, sound art and prog rock lenses.

They met in 2017 at an Upcycled Sounds experimental folk residency, spending an intense week arranging, performing and recording their debut EP Mais C’est Quoi Maman. Enthusiastic reviews from Folk Radio, Eliza Carthy and Ian Stephenson spurred them on to create their debut album Skiver in this same residency format.

In just 6 days they wrote and recorded a ‘pioneering’ [Songlines Mag] album. Its 2020 release on Upcycled Sounds Records saw Folkatron Sessions featured in Songlines Magazine, on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 2, 6 Music and Folk Radio UK.

Leeds duo Lucky Iris release their dreamy single ‘Coffee Shop’. The track is produced by Ed Heaton and mixed by Lee Smith (Holly Humberstone, Easy Life) and will be accompanied by pop up appearances in coffee shops across their native Leeds. The release is supported by Launchpad at Music: Leeds.

"Coffee Shop was really just created from our desire to get out into the world during lockdown. Although we were desperate to travel again, we found ourselves really wanting just to sit in our favourite local coffee shop and feel that little sense of normality that comes with being out and about running errands and stressing about running errands. Leeds artist elkyn returns with delicate new 'lonely folk' track ‘found the back of the tv remote’, released via Tambourine Machine Records.

A personal reflection on dealing with losing someone you care about and finding yourself with a lack of direction, the track follows up the recent singles ‘something’, ‘if only it was alright now’ and last year’s debut EP ‘beech’. It expands upon the soft, half-whispered sound of his previous releases, adding a sonic richness that brings his songwriting to the fore.

“I started writing tv remote after a break-up which left me not knowing what to do with myself," elkyn explains. "I wanted to juxtapose the pretty defeating moments next to the little wins even though they seem pretty small in comparison, like “wasted, alone. Found the back of the TV remote”. There’s a lot about regretting pushing the people away that have been good to me running through the song”.

Behind the moniker elkyn stands Leeds scintillating singer-songwriter Joseph Donnelly. Intricately plucked guitar riffs meet introspective lyricism as this “lonely folk” artist invites you inside his deepest thoughts and fears through beautiful storytelling.

The Yorkshire songwriter’s stirring sophomore release ‘if only it was alright now’ acted as an impressive bookend for the Beech era landing him a feature on Atwood Magazine’s ‘Artists to Watch for 2021’ citing him as “uniquely visceral and vulnerable”. The track also received appraisal from the likes of BBC Introducing, landed a spot on Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ editorial playlist as well as being highlighted on an array of curated playlists. 

With elkyn’s ability to continue building such a strong presence in such a short amount of time, it comes as no surprise that the wordsmith’s most recent single ‘something’, released Feb 2021, has quickly become his greatest success yet with multiple editorial playlist placements and Radio X’s John Kennedy declaring the track “absolutely fantastic”.

In the shadows of the UK’s numerous lockdowns, elkyn resigned to the confinement of his bedroom walls to write, zoom and reflect before finally returning to Leeds Nave Studios to embark on his next chapter with producer Mark Gustafson, but this time instilled with a newly found confidence.

Glimmers of hope are scattered amongst elkyn’s familiar pulses of dark rumination as we’re enveloped in heartrending tales of youth, love and regret. elkyn is currently working on his debut album.

Above & Beyond share their Deep Mix of ‘Almost Home,’ their most recent single and first joint effort in over four years with long-time collaborator Justine Suissa.

‘Almost Home’ was Above & Beyond’s first club track of 2021, arriving just in time for their Group Therapy 450 milestone show at The Drumsheds London in early September. The trio premiered their deep mix of ‘Almost Home’ in their warm up set for Group Therapy 450, recorded in Hackney Canal, London. Group Therapy 450 was Above & Beyond's first headline show in over a year, with the band performing to 10,000 fans in person, plus tens of thousands more online. Both sets have been uploaded to YouTube, racking up nearly a million views in less than a month. 

Jono, Tony, Paavo and Justine have been working together since 2000 when they formed the group OceanLab. In 2008, they released their first and only album ‘Sirens Of The Sea’,a record that has gained near-mythical status among trance fans. More recently, Above & Beyond and Justine have collaborated on club hits like ‘Alright Now’, ‘Cold Feet’ and ‘Another Chance’, and emotive, downtempo records like ‘Little Something’. Acclaimed Dutch duo Tinlicker (Micha Heyboer and Jordi van Achthoven) have released their stirring new single ‘Be Here and Now’ on London based independent label Anjunadeep. The single release is accompanied by a music video directed by Julius Ponten and starring Dutch actor Werner Kolf (Wolf, Gangster, Vechtershart). 

A collaboration with vocalist Nathan Nicholson, who has previously worked with Claptone, Kiko Franco, and Hannah Wants, ‘Be Here and Now’ presents as a part ballad, part progressive house anthem. Featuring the ecstatic builds and strings that have become synonymous with Tinlicker’s hair-raising sound, the single invokes the emotions of looking back at what once was. On the single, vocalist Nathan Nicholson explains:

"When Tinlicker first sent me the instrumental for this song, long before they gave it rhythm, I fell in love with it - just piano and strings. It was very powerful and a lot of the lyrics and all of the melody came out on my first pass. The lyrics are about a longing for the past and the innocence of growing up. I lost my mom when I was eighteen and within a year moved from Tennessee to England, so my childhood into adulthood has a very strong line running in between. I'm in a constant war with nostalgia - the other life - and where I am right now. In this song I'm simply telling myself to have reverence for my past, but not to be beholden to it. A huge thanks to Tinlicker for asking me to be a part of it.”

‘Be Here and Now’ joins Tinlicker’s esteemed catalogue, which includes their 2019 album ‘This Is Not Out Universe’ which saw support from the likes of Pete Tong, Ben Malone at Kiss FM, SiriusXM Chill, 538 Dance Department, Slam!, and Sunshine Live, as well as prolific producers such as deadmau5, Gorgon City, Cassian, Eli & Fur, Lane 8, Dosem and Edu Imbernon. 

Having individually honed their skills as part of a world-renown drum and bass act Black Sun Empire (Heyboer), and as a producer, songwriter and music editor for many artists (Van Achthoven), Tinlicker has quickly become a household name in the world of electronic dance music. Their single ‘Because You Move Me’ is currently #20 on the German radio charts and has accrued over 100M Spotify streams, whilst their rework of Robert Miles recently hit Beatport #1.
