One Note Samba (Bossa Nova)

Cover of Saudade - the title track off Thievery Corporation's 2014 Bossa Nova album.
This simple instrumental was recorded using only a classical guitar, with two tracks.

O programa "Ambientes" que apresento sugere reviver o espírito de variados géneros da música, espanhola dos finais do séc. XIX, baladas sul-americanas, temas tradicionais Ingleses, melodias francesas, passando por temas dos anos 60 e 70 até à suave evocação das Valsas Brasileiras, Chôros, dos temas de Jazz e Bossa Nova e toda a sorte de peças do repertório da Guitarra Clássica bem como várias transcrições e arranjos. A interpretação dos temas apresenta-se com uma concepção instrumental erudita que cultiva o som quente e elegante que caracteriza a sonoridade da Guitarra Clássica, instrumento no qual realizei estudos superiores na vertente da performance musical.

The "Ambientes" program I present suggests reviving the spirit of varied genres of music, that goes from the late XIX century Spanish guitar scores, South American ballads, traditional English, French melodies, themes from the 60s and 70s, to the smooth evocation of Brazilian Waltzes, Choros, themes of Jazz and Bossa Nova and all sorts of pieces of the Classical Guitar repertoire as well as several self-made transcriptions and arrangements. The interpretation of the music is presented with a classical instrumental conception cultivating the warm and elegant sound that characterizes the classical guitar, an instrument on which I developed my higher education in the field of the musical performance.

Judah Adashi’s piece: my heart comes undone is a meditation on patience and longing, inspired by the work of Björk (the title and musical point of departure come from her song “Unravel”) and Arvo Pärt. The score includes an epigraph by Rainer Maria Rilke, translated by Stephen Mitchell: “We don't accomplish our love in a single year / as the flowers do.” my heart comes undone was commissioned by the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, specifically by the Preparatory String Department's Pre-Conservatory Violin Program. The piece was conceived with three possible scorings in mind -– solo cello with loop pedal, solo cello and strings, or string quartet -– but can be performed in a variety of blended instrumental or vocal combinations, in greater numbers, and with or without amplification, effects, lighting and movement.  The piece was inspired by the composers wish to write something that presented new challenges to the PCVP violinists, by way of its contrast with their characteristically virtuosic repertoire. It was also inspired by his relationship with his then girlfriend, now wife Lavena Johnson. “…(it) took a long time to develop (for various reasons, nearly two years elapsed between our first meeting and our first date!), and by her cello playing, in particular, the experience of listening to her practice long, slow scales.”  The arrangement performed for solo electric guitar and loop pedal was a collaborative one between guitarist Zane Forshee and Judah Adashi.  Forshee recently released a recording of this work in March 2017 on the Artists Recording Collective Label.
