As part of The Prosperity Project, lead artist Jesse Jones invited Kyungso Park, an acclaimed Korean musician and Cormac De Barra, a well known Irish musician to partake in a week long exchange/residency which culminated in the live event; WANT. 
For the live performance we presented the image of the Harp, a potent national symbol and the very stamp of the state, to exist in oscillation with the Korean Gayegeum, itself an equally loaded instrument of national experience. Together both Kyungso and Cormac wandered and way fared, and like Turlough O’Carolan the blind nomadic 17th century musician who inspired their performance, they too were required to constantly adapt to an unknowable world through instinct, friendship and solidarity.

The Prosperity Project aims to look at the construction of our political consciousness as a nation while walking and speaking with the ‘Other’. In this decade of commemoration we wish not to look back at our own history in isolation, but see the interconnected nature of that history globally.  I propose this gesture as a double vision; a ‘bi’ or ‘omni’ focal of two or many oscillating images that act in reflection and contradiction, constantly asking us to see our history anew, and like music itself, as an improvised experience.  Over the duration of these six live events the project will touch upon aspects of prosperity that relate to WANT, LAND, WORK, PROSPER and LIVE. Within each of these moments there will be multiple collaborations with elective communities and individuals to participate in this research and in the live works. For our first event WANT we looked at the shared space of music as a site of the cultural commons, an issue that was then opened for discussion in Act Two of WANT. This discussion was led by Iain Boal, a social historian, who we invited to Dublin for a residency period in advance of WANT to research and explore the commons in relation to the post Celtic tiger period.
As part of this residency period Liz Burns of Fire Station Artists’ Studios worked with us to curate a Cycle Tour of the city. The Cycle Tour titled, The Green Machine, acted as a space to accelerate our meeting with communities within the Docklands area and to introduce Iain to various communities and initiatives. The Green Machine included Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Terry Fagan of the North Inner City Folklore Project in Liberty House Flats, Eileen Vaughan and Willie Dwyer at St Mary’s Youth Project, a tour of the Sean O Casey Centre, by Fran Laycock as well as presentations from artist Michelle Browne and architectural historian, Ellen Rowley, Damien Ó Tuama  of Dublin Cycle Campaign and cycle advisor, Rob Parkinson. The tour concluded with a picnic and discussion at Pigeon House hosted by Rosie Lynch and Holly Kearns of the curatorial art project Commonage.

Create, in partnership with Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Age & Opportunity, University of Limerick, Fingal Arts Office, and the Engagement and Learning Dept of IMMA, is delighted to share this In Conversation event with renowned US-based art historian and educator Grant Kester, and Gráinne Coughlan, Independent Researcher and PhD candidate TU Dublin. The event was chaired by Professor Kerstin Mey, President, University of Limerick.

As Professor of Art History at UCSD and the founding editor of Field: A Journal of Socially Engaged Art Criticism, Grant is one of the leading figures in the critical dialogue around socially engaged art practice today. Taking place in the context of ongoing work Create and the above partners are undertaking to devise a new evaluative register and framework for collaborative / socially engaged arts practice, this conversation delved into the question of the critical coordinates for collaborative and socially engaged arts practice, exploring alternative ways to analyse and understand the complex processes and relationships inherent to socially engaged art and which lay the foundations for change.

Nic Green, theatre artist and creator of award winning show Trilogy talks to Create's Katrina Goldstone.

In Part One, Nic Green, in conversation with Katrina Goldstone, discusses the encounters that inspired Trilogy and the diverse processes involved in creating the show that won her a Herald Angel Award at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show ends in a celebratory dance by a multitude of naked women of all ages, sizes and ethnicities.

Since 2005, work under the artistic direction of Nic Green has spanned solo and group theatre performance, community and public art projects, pedagogical and holistic learning experiences and interactive web-based endeavours. Nic is committed to creating hopeful and accessible art with emphasis on the notion of making positive change, and empowering others to do the same.

The front bar in Reapy’s was packed to the rafters at lunchtime on April the 6th, for our very first live in-person Ory’Sta, welcoming Maureen Kennelly (Director, Arts Council), Patrick Fox (Director, Heart of Glass) and Ailbhe Murphy (Director, Create). This is the fifth in our Ory’Sta series of discussion events with artists, residents, community groups, and business people from Tuam and beyond.

No longer confined to a Zoom screen, we were thrilled to welcome artists and community members to discuss creative place making. Tuam is a unique place with many deeply embedded artistic and cultural habits and practices. This made for a rich conversation between all of our guests, including addressing how different communities can engage creatively to build the version of place they want to be a part of? How can artists be key partners in this work? How will Create and Tuam continue to work together to realise their shared visions? We discussed legacy, and the importance of ensuring that the great work already started can continue, when Create’s role in the project finishes at the end of 2023.

In the aftermath of the Celtic Tiger, with its ambitious infrastructure representing the vision of a 21st century Ireland , what are the real consequences for the communities that border the new motorway routes. Is the legacy for communities dislocation or a new found confidence and progress?

Panel discussion as part of Asylum Archive

Over the last four years, Susanne Bosch, CAPP Artist Researcher, gathered about 200 hours of audio recordings from the CAPP network meetings, events, dialogues, conversations and exchanges. She captured countless moments attempting to verbally de-construct and newly construct this field of interconnectedness through collaborative arts. A sound piece has been developed in collaboration with composer, musician and producer Seán Mac Erlaine that captures the polyphonic nature of this practice and the multi-layered, complex web of conversations.

The sound piece is 20 min long, contains 20 different voices and was developed for both stereo listening as well as Dolby 5.1 surround environments.

The Realm Of Possibility - An Acoustic Footprint

Join Oein DeBharduin, author, educator and inaugural recipient of Creative Places Tuam's thinking on Tuam Residency for “Walking Whid/ Walking Story” a journey through the physical space of Tuam Town. Oein will guide the listener through the town, narrating the stories, folklore, legends and history of Tuam, the Traveller Community and its relationship with Tuam.

Our mission is to support artists and arts organisations working collaboratively with communities in social and community contexts, be they communities of place or communities brought together by interest.

What We Do

Create supports artists in making exceptional art with communities in the broadest sense – it can be a neighbourhood organisation; pigeon fanciers; a chess club; working fishermen, farmers or asylum seekers. (All these groups have worked with artists through the Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme managed by Create)

Create supports artists in an open-ended approach to the artistic process and art making – as co-creators with different partners and audiences

Create encourages ways of making art that take place primarily outside of the traditional gallery or theatre space

Collaborative arts is a dynamic and contemporary form of arts practice. Related and similar ways of working can come under the headings of participatory arts, socially engaged arts and in the theoretical realm are closely linked to the concept of relational aesthetics. Collaborative arts practice plays with and contests notions of authorship and the idea of the artist-genius. Work that is made collaboratively often exists outside of the gallery or takes place outside the traditional theatre space. It can also be interdisciplinary and for example involve a musician working with a visual artist or an architect with a dance artist. Create seeks to foster current and future potential for collaboration between artists and communities, encouraging art projects that reflect the exciting ways in which collaborative arts represent a complex range of ideas and approaches.

Artists and arts organisations working collaboratively with communities of place and /or interest is widely seen as one of the most vibrant and challenging areas of arts practice, requiring skills of negotiation and project management. The exploratory processes and practices of collaborative arts demand different approaches to traditional definitions of art, artists and arts development.

Create responds to these demands by offering a range of services for artists and arts organisations which include Professional Development and Advisory Sessions, Learning Development and Create engages in partnerships on initiatives that support and develop collaborative arts practice across all artforms.
