Brad Wilcox is one of the nation’s leading experts on research related to the family. He is the director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, where he is also associate professor of sociology. The University of Chicago Press published his first book, Soft Patriarchs and New Men: How Christianity Shapes Fathers and Husbands, in 2004. His second book, Soul Mates: Religion, Sex, Love, & Marriage among African Americans and Latinos, is under contract with Oxford University Press and is expected out later this year. As director of the National Marriage Project, Wilcox also oversees the publication of an annual report on marriage in America, entitled The State of Our Unions. I met with him in Charlottesville, Virginia, and we began our conversation by talking about an article he had just published in The Atlantic on income inequality.
