PREMIERE: Cressida - Semtex [Voitax]

La Chirranga are a Colombian Cumbia band that we met when we played a show together while they were touring Europe in 2019.

Our musical styles are very different but the energy on stage was the same, and we agreed that we should record together while they were in town.

Time got away from us, but we went to their final gig before they left Europe. While there we recorded them individually in the alleyway outside the venue - drums, vocals, and guacharaca.

We took the recordings and chopped them up, adding our own parts to turn the samples into what you hear today.

The single is accompanied by a remix from @cressida [VOITAX, OSF]. Artwork by Mau Gatiyo. Mastering by Conor Dalton, Glowcast Mastering.

La Chirranga are Diego Ávila (Armala/FUC), Mauricio Isaza (Mau Gatiyo) and Jaime Isaza (Jaiom). They are from Bogotá, Colombia.

It all began with “Have Sword, Will Travel“, an EP that started the „armed“ journey with its many different ups and downs. 
But the label is still here and celebrates its 10th anniversary today. 
Besides being pretty emotional about the fact that this journey is still continuing after so many years, I’m also looking back at an intense period of time full of doubts, disappointments and mistakes. 
Especially social media leads us to believe that every life is so exciting, spectacular and unique and that you are doing something wrong compared to all of this glamorous self-promotion. 
If you really start comparing to these blissful images, things feel miserable very fast. 
But instead, the healthiest things are to just be yourself, to follow your vision no matter how slow and complicated things evolve and to avoid doing things that feel wrong and factitious. 
And because of that, everything is right where it should be for Shaw Cuts and it’s still so much fun and exciting to run this project. 
I’m trying my best to keep things going and to keep things fresh & exciting - hopefully for another decade.
Thank you all for the genuine appreciation and support of all the music that got released over the past 10 years, for having an open mind for all the different projects and for helping the label to grow and develop a certain brand recognition and identity.

Wildly creative and feverishly hard-working DJ and producer, @waxwingsofficial, presented his ‘Whisper’ EP back in June; just as summer kicked into full swing. Now in the thick of the season, Wax wings returns with a Remix EP, calling upon some of his nearest and dearest to provide new takes on tracks from ‘Whisper’. As far as the original EP was a series of dance floor hard hitters, this remix EP goes one step further taking tracks in a plethora of weird and wonderful directions.

"Never Come Back" receives a complete transformation from Berlin-based producer, Cressida aka @sick. Cressida’s ‘Karlshorst Klub Mix’ showcases the elements of Berlin techno that first put the city on the map as a Techno mecca. Booming and unrelenting kicks and red sirens sound throughout. Maintaining some subtle nuances of the original swirling melody, nevertheless, this is undoubtedly a big room track that sits perfectly at home, pounding the walls and floors of Berghain main room.

Over a few years, Berlin-based, UK-born DJ/producer Jenagan Sivakumar, otherwise known as @Cressida, has become a powerful force within the darker strands of dance music. Originating from London’s underground, and inspired by dubstep, grime and grittier sounds of metal and hardcore, he upped sticks to techno’s mecca, to explore a more heads-down form of techno there. Having released on the likes of VOITAX, LDNWHT, Syncretism and OSF, and drawn a fan in Dax J, Cressida’s stock is on the rise. Despite long flirtations with techno, his more recent output like ‘Borneo Function’ (named after one of the Orgazoid’s tracks in Peep Show) mine his bass origins, with Eski clicks and weighty bass. ‘New Day’, which he’s giving away for free below, takes a Wiley vocal and fashions it into a midnight-hued dub cut. “Wiley dropped some acappellas back in 2013 from his album ‘Snakes and Ladders’, and it was Chevel at Atonal in 2017 that I had heard made the best use of the ‘And Again’ vocals,” he says. “It blew me away when I heard at Atonal’s main stage. I managed to get a copy of this and was using it all the time, so I thought I would have a go at doing something myself. This is what I came up with.” Listen to – and download – ‘New Day’ now:

Joining the NHS team is Manchester’s own Avernian, whose presence amongst many other contemporary electronic music producers has shone brightly through a slew of releases on Daniel Haaksman’s Man Recordings, Scuffed Records, Row & Circular Jaw; a refined synergy of worldly instrumentation and modern mechanical sounds characterized by oblique rhythm structures defines his works. His foray into the NHS realm comes in the form of ‘Ripper’ – a battle-ready EP that encompasses the stages of conflict through rolling drum work and thunderous atmospheres.

We are called into battle with the title track ‘Ripper’ whose namesake suggests a sense of tearing and viciousness. Commencing with the ominous gong that swims through the emptiness at the beginning of the piece, we are immediately crushed by the monstrous kick drum sequence that dominates the mix of delicate distortion on the hats and mid frequency African percussion guiding it forward.

Following on is ‘Tornado’ taking a much more-fuller, bolder approach to the quality of the soundscape. Still carrying the same focus on rhythm primarily, Tornado chugs along as the 4x4 kick pattern carries the polyrhythmic force into the eye of the storm. Double time tabla keep the furious pace spinning around the outside of the intricate structure of this anarchic clash personified.

Taking the relentlessness of Tornado, Glacial Industries affiliate ELLLL expels the track into the nothingness of space with an exercise in low-end mastery. A distinct lack of high-end sounds, complex, rumbling sub bass hooks and its hammering rhythm help create the haunting mood on her reinterpretation of Tornado, an ideal soundtrack to the aftermath of the devastating storm.

Our last stand is not one that we take on alone; Avernian is joined by Cressida on ‘Canary’. Breathy risers maximise the forcefulness of the rhythmic madness on Canary. Rough, distorted smashes and crashes, much like that of the metal of swords and shields engaged in conflict, maintain the constant energy of the ensuing struggle. A powerful conclusion to the EP, though the war carries on.
