In the second episode of the podcast Ellie Farmahan, Eva Elliott and Russell Todd from the evaluation team discussed the approach that their evaluation of Creu Cyffro will take. 

They touched on the Media Sentiment Analysis element, and in this episode Russell chats with Steph Bridgeman – who lives in a former mill town in east Lancashire that faces similar post-industrial challenges as Merthyr Tydfil – to explain all about the Media Sentiment Analysis.

Steph, who runs the organisation Experienced Media Analysts, explains how she undertakes a Media Sentiment Analysis and what it can tell us about how an area is portrayed in the media.

Yn y rhifyn Cymraeg hwn mae Lis McLean o Theatr Soar yn egluro rôl y Theatr yng Nghreu Cyffro fel hyb Cymraeg ar gyfer Merthyr Tudful a’i cylch. Mae hanes hir a chyfoethog gan y theatr a oedd yn gapel ers talwm. Capel chwaer Soar oedd Capel Bethesda, nad yw’n bodoli bellach, ond oedd capel Joseph Parry, y cyfansoddwr ac un o feibion enwocaf Merthyr a gafodd ei eni ym 1841.

Mae Theatr Soar yn gartref i gaffi, canolfan gelfyddydau a pherfformio, Menter Iaith Merthyr Tudful a sawl o ddosbarthau a digwyddiadau. E ei bod yn hyb Cymraeg, mae’r Ganolfan yn croesawu pobl o’r holl gymunedau ieithyddol Merthyr y dyddiau hyn megis Iaith Arwyddion Prydain, Pwyleg, Portiwgaleg a mwy. Hefyd, mae Canolfan Soar wedi croesawu’n ddiweddar y teuluoedd Wcrainaidd cyntaf sydd wedi dod i Ferthyr.

In this Welsh language episode Lis McLean of Theatr Soar explain the role the Theatre is playing in Creu Cyffro as the Welsh language hub for Mertyr Tydfil and the surrounding area. The Theatre has a long and rich history and was formerly a chapel. Soar’s sister chapel was Capel Bethesda, which doesn’t exist anymore, but was the chapel of Joseph Parry, the composer and one of Merthyr’s most famous sons who was born in 1841.

Theatr Soar is home to a café, an arts and performance centre, Menter Iaith Merthyr Tudful and a range of classes and events. Although it is a Welsh language hub, the Centre welcomes people from all of Merthyr’s linguistic communities today such as British Sign Language, Polish, Portuguese and more. Also, Canolfan Soar has recently welcomed the first Ukrainian families who have come to Merthyr.

GTFM is advising the Creu Cyffro programme on the establishment of a community radio station for Merthyr Tydfil which will broadcast from the Gurnos Clinic. Terry discusses why community radio is important for community wellbeing and explains what the concept of 'social gain' might mean for a community like Merthyr Tydfil.

In the fourth episode of the podcast Steph Bridgeman joined Russell Todd, member of the evaluation team, to discuss Media Sentiment Analysis: what it is; how it can help people/organisations who depend on media coverage; what it tells us about people’s online search habits.

In this episode Steph, who runs her own consultancy called Experienced Media Analysts, returns to the podcast to discuss her first Media Sentiment Analysis report for the evaluation work. The report explores media about Merthyr between January and June 2022 and Steph gives a flavour of the results.

Since completing the first analysis Steph has been analysing media since July and her final report will be completed in approximately November.
