Since 2003, the black hole at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster has been associated with sound. This is because astronomers discovered that pressure waves sent out by the black hole caused ripples in the cluster’s hot gas that could be translated into a note — one that humans cannot hear some 57 octaves below middle C. Now a new sonification brings more notes to this black hole sound machine. A new sonification — that is, the translation of astronomical data into sound — is being released in time for NASA’s Black Hole Week this year.

In some ways, this sonification is unlike any other done before because it revisits the actual sound waves discovered in data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The popular misconception that there is no sound in space originates with the fact that most of space is essentially a vacuum, providing no medium for sound waves to propagate through. A galaxy cluster, on the other hand, has copious amounts of gas that envelops the hundreds or even thousands of galaxies within it, providing an avenue for the sound waves to travel.

In this new sonification of Perseus, the sound waves that were previously identified were extracted and made audible for the first time. The sound waves were extracted in radial directions, that is, outwards from the center. The signals were then resynthesized into the range of human hearing by scaling them upward by 57 and 58 octaves above their true pitch. Another way to put this is that they are being heard 144 and 288 quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) times higher than their original frequency. The radar-like scan around the image allows you to hear waves emitted in different directions. In the visual image of these data, blue and purple both show X-ray data captured by Chandra.

Radica en la cd de Puebla, es parte del colectivo/residencia po$$$ole,  en dónde se promueve los ritmos latinos y las hibridaciones de los mismos.  "Este set lo hice con una propuesta mas hacia el neo perreo, el trap, con tintes del tribal y la electrónica, quería que fuera muy suave, en el que se sienta la sensualidad del perreo pero también busqué atmósferas cálidas e inclusive tristes. Últimamente me gustan los ritmos muy acelerados y golpeados, pero justo quise salir de esa zona y darle una pausa a la loquera, para entrar en otro mood"

Between Earth and the Sun, space is not truly empty but is filled with a soup of charged particles called plasma. This plasma comes from the Sun, pumped out in a steady stream called the solar wind and sporadically blasted away in explosive solar eruptions. When this solar plasma strikes Earth, it causes the magnetic field lines and plasma around Earth to vibrate like the plucked strings of a harp, producing ultralow-frequency waves.

In 2007, NASA launched five satellites to fly through Earth’s magnetic “harp” – its magnetosphere – as part of the THEMIS mission (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms). Since then, THEMIS has been gathering a bounty of information about plasma waves across Earth’s magnetosphere. 

The frequencies of the waves THEMIS measures are too low for our ears to hear, however. So a NASA citizen science project called HARP – or Heliophysics Audified: Resonances in Plasmas – has sped up the waves recorded by THEMIS to convert them to sound waves.

In this clip from March 17-20, 2012, whistle sounds are repeatedly heard over ambient background whooshes and crunches. The whistles change in pitch as a THEMIS spacecraft moves toward and away from Earth on three orbits, with a maximum altitude of about 50,000 miles. These sounds are related to Earth’s magnetic harp, which has longer magnetic strings and lower pitches farther away from Earth. These three orbits happened near the end of a geomagnetic storm when the solar wind was blowing past Earth with speeds up to about 1,300,000 miles per hour, which is fast even by solar wind standards! There’s often more harp activity during fast solar wind conditions and geomagnetic storms. At the same time, many other types of magnetic vibrations occur during geomagnetic storms, most of which sound like background whooshes and crunches.

Para cuando el audio comience va a haber pasado al menos una hora desde que emprendimos la caminata con Flor, mi compañera. Estamos yendo aguas abajo, siguiendo la orilla desde el Río Paraná, es un día muy caluroso del verano de 2021. Habiendo partido de la playa de Villa Urquiza no nos quedó alternativa más que desviarnos por una orilla de un arroyo, un efluente del río que creemos es el Arroyo Las Conchas. Tenemos una cámara, yo llevo una grabadora de sonido en mano, Flor sus cuadernos, tintas y lápices. Agotados por el sol pleno decidimos abandonar la orilla para sumergirnos en el montecito que corre paralelo al arroyo siguiendo siempre la misma dirección.
Cada paso adentro del monte, cada enramada o cada claro, dispuso en el ambiente un concierto de aves distinto. No sé identificar a los solistas o a esas bandas, ni por su nombre autóctono ni por su descripción científica, pero he logrado registrar sus llamados, sus melodías, sus declamaciones y sus respuestas. He decidido utilizar sólo estas grabaciones, con el sonido de nuestro andar y los ruidos de la manipulación del grabador incluidos, como material para la generación de un nuevo paisaje sonoro.
Fue un diálogo con la memoria de estos pájaros. Fue volver a escucharlos pero esta vez con las palabras resonantes de Ukaivberá Gladys Do Nascimento. Durante el cursado de Diálogos Interespecies, ella nos contó un relato que no está en la historia oficial, sobre cómo fue por estos arroyos que se desarrolló el proceso de colonización e intento de exterminio de los charrúas dentro de lo que hoy conocemos como Entre Ríos.

Although space is a virtual vacuum, this does not mean there is no sound in space. Sound does exist as electromagnetic vibrations. The specially designed instruments on board the various space probes used Plasma Wave antenna to record the vibrations used here, all within the range of human hearing (20-20,000 CPS)

Each planet, moon and ring system has a distinctive "musical" pattern. Listening to this unusual recording has a mysteriously relaxing effect. After a long hard day, you can bring your brainwaves into a slower and meditative state.

In 1989, Dr. Jeffrey D. Thompson, D.C., B.F.A. was approached by representatives working with NASA and JPL to explore a series of powerful recordings which the Voyager I & II Spacecraft had sent back from Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These recordings seemed to be having a profound effect on the scientists and researchers who were exposed to them. Dr. Thompson was approached as an expert in the field of sound and healing, and especially in his work with "Primordial Sounds.â€ Primordial sounds are human body sounds and nature sounds formatted in special ways to cause a deep response in the subconscious mind. These are extremely useful in all levels of healing. Could the space sounds actually be Primordial Sounds, also from outer space but strangely familiar to us?

The sounds from Neptune are mysterious and alluring. At times they sound like strange drums and wind, at other times they resemble cricket sounds and thunderstorms. Like nothing you have ever experienced before from the farthest planet out in our solar system from which Voyager made sound recordings.

On its approach to Neptune in August 1989, Voyager 2 captured this image of the fourth and outermost of the giant gas planets. This image shows two of the four oval cloud features tracked by the cameras. The large dark oval near the left edge revolves around Neptune every 18 hours. The bright clouds immediately to the south and east of this oval substantially change their appearance in periods as short as 4 hours. The second dark spot, at the lower right edge, revolves around Neptune every 16 hours.

Voyager II swept past the Neptune system on August 24-25, 1989. Neptune's atmosphere proved surprisingly active, with wind velocities clocked at over 700 MPH. This dynamic climactic activity is powered by Neptune's internal heat, which provides over twice as much energy as the feeble sunlight that the planet receives. Neptune has eight moons and three rings, as well as a highly tilted and offset magnetic field.

Neptune's electromagnetic environment is surprising. It is inclined to the planetary axis by 47Â°. Periodic pulses of radio energy were also recorded, generated by rotation of the planet's deep interior. Neptune's lovely blue color is a result of methane, helium and hydrogen gasses in its atmosphere.
