Nucleus & Paradox have always been a worthy pairing and their next release for Metalheadz, which is split into 2 parts, once again proves it. Their 2005 single on the label is switched up across both parts, with ’12 Bits’ getting a Mako remix whilst the duo themselves present a new take on ‘Aragon’, bringing a fresh spark to the original.

The two remaining tracks on the EP are originals, with both showcasing exquisite breaks and twisted basslines throughout. Artwork from Vodker completes the ‘Wrath EP’ package.

Smooth N Groove Records have saved the best till last, ending out the year with the much hyped 'Joy & Pain' EP by top shelf producer Madcap. The EP has been receiving heavy support from some of drum and basses top players, including Randall, LTJ Bukem, Makoto and Velocity to name a few.

Since the early 90's Madcap has been heavily involved within the Drum & Bass scene, primarily as a DJ touring up and down the UK before trying his hand at music production. Since his first release in 2006 on Nookies label, Phuzion and later the legendary Good Looking Records, Madcap has continued to master his distinctive sound to the high quality we hear today. Over the years his fan base has grown rapidly, placing him in high demand amongst co-producers wanting to collaborate alongside him or labels wanting a release. His back catalogue continues to grow and he has seen releases on Fokuz, Celcius, Jazzsticks, a recent vinyl release on Soul Deep and his track 'Rain' featured on Randall's LP Pieces 2.

2017 has been a busy year for Madcap and he is ending it out strong. The 'Joy & Pain' EP shows his experience as a producer and why he is considered one of the greats within the scene. The EP is influenced by both sides of the musical spectrum. From the deeper moods of 'String Puppet' to the more soulful, bass booming and highly addictive vibes of 'Joy'. The EP continues to progress and gets better and better, notably the amazing vocals and steppy drum patten in 'Pray' to the wicked rolling vibes of 'Traits'. This EP is by far one of, if not his best solo work to date.

Delta9 Recordings has a scope which stretches throughout the most creative parts of Europe, places which are renowned as a hotbed for music, as well as a breeding ground for artists. From Berlin, Germany to Bergamo, Italy, the label has built itself on top of these two cities, bringing forward artists from the continent’s furthest reaches and pushing them onto the pedestal provided for them by the label. Delta9 Recordings focuses on mainly the dark, minimalistic sounds of drum & bass and this is something which is highlighted throughout their slowly growing back catalogue of music. Their next EP follows this tradition, with DJ and producer Frame taking centre stage for his moody, rolling delivery. The relative newcomer is about to offer the Delta9 Recordings fan base three brand new sonic cuts which epitomise what he represents; a no-holds barred production standard and a level of musicality which isn’t watered down by the music’s darker undertones.

First to be unveiled is title-track ‘On the Road’, a record which begins with a strange looping of bass and flying beats, peppered by scuttling percussion which juts out from between each layer. It’s an introduction into Frame and if it’s your first insight into his artistry; you become aware of how immersive his production is. ‘Pony Express’ peddles hollowed breaks, which break up the mix and pull you down each rattling drum sequence with a power that keeps the record driving forward. It’s reminiscent of the old-school vibes which made drum & bass such a recognisable genre, however it also boasts a more contemporary standard with its low lying bassline, one which ducks and dives throughout the composition. Ending the EP is ‘Unbreakable’, one which draws you in through its throbbing bass pads which are like a heartbeat beneath its intro. As ‘Unbreakable’ descends, you’re thrown into loops of crashing drum pounds, something which is unmistakably a part of Frame’s engineering. As a collective, every track featured demonstrates Frame’s appeal as an addition to any DJ set. This is something which will continue with the help of Delta9 Recordings, an imprint who are already leaving their own legacy.

Dutch drum & bass artist Nymfo has firmly established himself as both a DJ and producer. Since 2007 he’s found himself in the libraries of essential imprints such as Commercial Suicide (where he released his debut album ‘Characters’), CIA Records, Spearhead, Metalheadz, Hospital Records, and Ram, stretching his energetic, brilliantly crafted music throughout a variety of sub genres. And since the beginning of his career, he’s helped to expand the formidable reputation which Dispatch Recordings have built for themselves over the span of decades. Joining Dispatch for his next release, Nymfo offers up a variety of flavours through his forthcoming ‘Pictures of Silence’ LP, adding another trophy to their cabinet of historical releases.

The ‘Pictures of Silence’ LP spans a weighty number of tracks, with each demonstrating the echelons of engineering which Nymfo is capable of. Whilst never trying to fit a commercial paradigm and instead paying reverence to the roots of a genre which has become of dance music’s biggest exports, Nymfo has yet again set the bar high across an entire album. From beginning to end, ‘Pictures of Silence’ is a homage to what Nymfo’s expert skillset is capable of.

The LP begins with its title-track and ‘Pictures of Silence’ is a slamming roller, one punctuated through stabbing, metallic bass notes. Then you’re introduced to ‘Enforcer’, dropping through with skittering samples and slamming kicks. ‘Memory Lane’ nods to its namesake through scuttling breaks and Sense joins Nymfo for the sweeping sounds of ‘Hopeless & Free’.

‘That Bongo Track’ focuses heavily on its drum work, ‘Murphy’s Law’ growls with its techy prowess and Arkaik comes in for the following collaboration alongside Nymfo - ‘Curry’. ‘Ötzi the Iceman’ is next up with a crashing, lumbering rhythm then ‘Jarhead’ offers its chaotic bassline. Finally, ‘Cold Sweat’ is dropped with Fuji, against standalone Nymfo tracks ‘Hide & Seek’, with its deep underscores, and ‘A.F.C’ with its juxtaposed harmonies.

It’s a titanic LP from Nymfo. One which identifies him both as an integral part of the Dispatch Recordings roster, as well as the wider drum & bass market. Dispatch Recordings, lead by Ant TC1, has fine-tuned their A&R, something they’ve become notorious for.
