Episode 70 Can't Hardly Wait

Hello hello there everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Surviving the Horror.  This month, Josh and Colin are joined by resident lore expert for all things Dead Space, Kevin from the PlayStation Plus Game Club!  Kevin is a massive fan of the Dead Space series in general, and after recording the episode last July on Dead Space Remake, it didn't feel right to venture further into the series without his input.  The result is that the three of us had an over three hour discussion, breaking down all the important details, subtle audio notes, and larger mechanical trends that are present in Dead Space 2.  

Dead Space 2 released in January 2011 as the highly anticipated follow up to Visceral's Dead Space.  The game sees the continuation of Isaac Clarke's journey following the catastrophic tragedy aboard the Ishimura.  From the very beginning of Dead Space 2, Isaac, as well as the player, are thrust into chaos and the unknown as another Necromorph outbreak has seemingly begun aboard The Sprawl, a massive station orbiting the once moon of Saturn, Titan.  Due to the size and scope of The Sprawl compared with the Ishimura, everything in Dead Space 2 is cranked up to eleven.  The mystery, the action, the set pieces, and indeed the lore are all expanded upon greatly.  Just why is Isaac in a straight jacket upon waking up?  What are the four steps to run "the machine" that your companion Stross keeps talking about?  Can you truly trust anyone associated with Earth Gov. or The Church of Unitology?  Only through quick wits, persistence, and a butt load of ammo will you get the answers.

Surviving the Horror - Episode 12: Dead Space 2

Well hello there everybody, and welcome back to another exciting episode of Trophy Talk.  This month we're back to basics with just Colin and Josh so grab a beer , settle in and join them in some long and winding discussions surrounding a cadre of gaming topics.  As we do these shows on a monthly cadence now a lot can happen between episodes, and this was definitely the case over the last four week period.  Not only did we have the major reveal of Bungie's new extraction shooter Marathon, but we were also greeted with a shadow drop of a beloved 360 era RPG Oblivion, a full state of play on Borderlands 4, and a new trailer and firmed in release date for Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei.  It truly is a wonderful year to be a gamer, (price increases on hardware and software withstanding).  So, as this is a lot of news, and a lot of potential trophy lists and Platinums to earn we naturally spend some time talking about all of these reveals.  Perhaps most relevant to all of us though, is that Oblivion now has a Platinum trophy, and one that seemingly doesn't look to difficult to obtain.  Oblivion Remaster boasts the kind of list that allows you to play the game how you want to, as any class, race or skill build and still be able to earn the Platinum.  While some people may find this type of list to easy, Colin and Josh feel like it's right at home in the open world RPG genre.  

After our news related topics and discussions we of course jump in to what we've been playing.  Josh waxes poetic about a few games on the Xbox side (with parody in PSN trophy lists) as well as continuing to defend his Brick Master title with The Lego Movie 2 Videogame.  Colin continues his hiking journey across the post-apocalyptic United States in Death Stranding (and still absolutely loves it even after 60 hours), and dabbles back with an old classic in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.  Lastly of course we have our Discord / Patreon write ins as well as our Platinum shout outs.  We cover a good deal of topics in this episode with some really great conversation, even if we do go on tangents from time to time.  Regardless, we hope that you all enjoy the episode. Max and Zac both gush about GOTY contender Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and list some games that have completely been missed by them including Persona, Sly Cooper and The Evil Within. Lastly Zac has come up with a fun and mysterious new data-tastic way to tackle his backlog that compromises on finishing games and still earning some trophies, have the boys entered a new chapter in the trophy hunting meta game? Only one way to find out, as Aerosmith once said, 'Just Push Play'.
Next month Colin and Zac will be taking the Mooglecast in an Xbox Direction but until then be excellent to eachother.

Mooglecast, Episode 11 | Badass Lara = Good Lara | Mini Topics Volume 1

Jordan and Zac have finally convinced Kevin to play Untitled Goose Game and they all sit down to talk (and laugh) about it. They cover all of their favorite antics that the player can take part in as the goose wreaks havoc through this small “Sim-like” neighborhood. Zac makes a case for why this is a game that EVERYONE should at least try, and how it’s the perfect length for what it is. If you know what you’re doing, you could even finish it in the time it takes to listen to this podcast, but we recommend not ignoring the faultless sound design and music that adds so much character to this experience. There’s another mischievous bird out there besides Woody Woodpecker causing just as much trouble. So watch out and thanks for listening.

PS Plus Game Club - Episode 29: Untitled Goose Game

Hello one and all and welcome back to another episode of Surviving the Horror!  Every once in a while a horror game franchise comes around and captures the zeitgeist of the time, causing streamers, content creators and the like to all get involved in examining it.  In 2014, one such game came in to being.  Following in the footsteps of indie horror darlings like Slender, Scott Cawthon's Five Nights at Freddy's released in August of 2014 and quickly became a cult hit.  With ports in the same year for IOS and Android, Five Night's or FNAF, captured the imaginations and hearts of many a content creator and horror enthusiast.  Blending together tight but simplistic gameplay, a rich dosing of lore, and terrifying animatronics, FNAF was the full package.  Now, over ten years since it's initial creation, the FNAF franchise boasts over 12 games, a movie, several books and countless hours of YouTube content dedicated to its lore.  FNAF is one of those franchises that seemingly keeps giving, and garnering a community of people who love it.  Having never played any of these games before, it seemed only right that at some point we (Josh and Colin) had to get to FNAF.  

The lore for these games is tricky though, with a story spanning several decades and told non-chronologically through the games.  We figured we'd need a little help to really parse through some of this stuff in our freshman outing.  For this reason, we brought on special guest Kade, AKA TheGreenGorillaGamer.  Kade is a long time fan of FNAF, being first introduced to the series as a kid.  His breakdowns of lore, mechanics, and overall themes helped immensely as we tried to navigate our first five (really seven) nights at Freddy Fazebear's Pizza as a security guard.  Can we make it through all seven nights?  Is our battery management good enough to not be constantly on edge?  Only time will tell.  Come along with us though as we explore the topic of FNAF in what will undoubtedly be the first of several later episodes to come on the franchise.  Thank you for listening, and enjoy!

Zac suggested that we include Cult of the Lamb again for our quarterly vote in the Trophy Talk Discord and it won despite no one else we know playing it (as far as we can tell). We cover our favorite weapons and spells to take on the crusades through the dungeons, what it’s like to build a community with the scarce resources we have, and why it feels terrible to leave our little followers alone while rampaging through another ancient god’s lair. Then we get into the weird, funny, and sometimes disturbing things each of our cultists asked us to do. We also cover what can make this kind of game frustrating if you are trying to see and earn everything it has to offer. Sometimes this kind of game can be too much of a good thing.

PS Plus Game Club - Episode 30: Cult of the Lamb

Hello one and all, and welcome back to another episode of Mooglecast!  With holiday trips, and schedules being all over the place we have yet another episode for you all where the normally scheduled hosts get shuffled up a bit.  This month on Mooglecast Zac is joined by none other than Colin Kolhoven, from Trophy Talk and Surviving the Horror, to discuss a topic that doesn't get enough love in our community, Xbox.  Both Zac and Colin have a long history with the ecosystem and consoles, dating back to the original Xbox released on November 15th 2001.  It's here that our discussion begins, with the first Xbox console, why we were (or weren't) drawn to it, and what came next.  For many trophy hunters, the notion of chasing digital completion lists came with the advent of Xbox 360 in 2005.  Xbox for all intents and purposes introduced the world to the notion of "completing" games with achievements that offered in game challenges, a cumulative point system, and a way to brag to your friends and online communities.   It seems so strange then that Xbox, which started out it's first two generations so strongly with behemoths like Halo, Gears of War, Morrowind, and Fable, quickly fell from grace in the Xbox One era, and into the early portions of the current gen.  As of late though that story has started to change.  With multiple massive acquisitions over recent years, Xbox has started to hit it's cadence with regular AAA releases and a plethora of new offerings constantly coming to Game Pass.  In essence then, Zac and Colin do their best here to discuss the past, the present, and the future of what Xbox may hold in store.  Does its alternate ecosystem to PlayStation perhaps offer a welcome reprieve from constant trophy hunting, and a glimpse into a way that we used to all enjoy games?  Maybe so.  

For context on the current state of Xbox and the future, the boys also go over some of their favorite announcements from the recent Xbox showcase in June of 2025 comparing that shows style and substance with the most recent Sony State of Play.
