Rochdale’s John Blackburn has a new project called Crocus Sunday. He describes the music, as demonstrated on Jimi, as ‘lots of repetition, harmony, electronics and a bit of guitar to boot’ which is a pretty good summary. It is a track that doesn’t obviously sit in any one category, having the feel of a documentary theme or even computer game interlude but it isn’t exactly cinematic in the grandiose meaning of that term. John clarifies that the title is not a reference to Hendrix but to a new addition to the family. It is an imaginative track and its major key arpeggio patterns and minimalist style patterns are upbeat and heartwarming.

Jimi

Using field recordings from Hull University in 1985 for a never finished avant-garde musical venture.  The odd ambient sounds were recorded using our custom made AKTR recording device.. actually an Amazing Knackered Tape Recorder... it was just about as sophisticated as we could get in 1985.  It starts with 1 minute of spooky chords, then a bit of TD/Krautrock, and finally ... well I don't know really.

On the aptly named Many Colours we are taken on a journey, often punctuated by staccato synth patterns but nevertheless very fluid, seeming to be vague and ambient one moment, quite Prog-like the next and even finding room for a few jazz infusions here and there. Spoken word samples play low in the mix and there is an atmosphere that shifts as does the tempo and texture of the music. Clever and engaging."

Many Colours

This started off as a quirky funk reaction to Liz Truss as Prime Minister, but she promptly resigned just as I was getting going.  Somewhat stuck then, the middle section reflects my relief that she had gone.  I managed to finish just before Sunak appeared, ye gads I'm not going there.

Crocus Sunday - Cometh The Hour

Continuing "Physics to 60" here we have Measuring Time Intervals... The idea is to study Physics until you are 60 to raise UK standards to meet those of similar nations and to boost people’s Physics literacy.  Easier through musical interludes such as this!   Glad to help.

Measuring time intervals.  This may be done if the CRO has a calibrated time base like that in fig 11(3)B.  The course time base control marked time CM gives 6 pre-set sweep speeds.  The calibration only holds when the fine time base control is marked variable, is in the CAL position, and the X gain control is fully anticlockwise.

When Dad said anything negative or contentious Mum would always retort "Don't say that Michael".  She wouldn't hear a negative word said about anyone or anything.  Now that Mum has gone it is a struggle to keep Dad grounded, and positive.

I'm down to 4 days a week at work so I've a bit more time to create some music.  There will be tons of repetition, some harmony, electronics and a bit of guitar to boot.   I'll try to keep it positive and up beat.  Lets make every day a Crocus Sunday.
