Long-standing techno force @garybeck will return to Berlin’s Second State with a grooving and cerebral 4 track EP. A pillar of Scotland’s techno scene, Gary has appeared regularly at some of the globe’s most respected venues and festivals including Womb Tokyo, fabric, Output NYC and Awakenings, to name a few. 

Title track ‘Supervan’ opens with bouncing bass and rattling percussion. A chopped-up vocal is introduced and commands the track forward as it ascends, with the kick battling to harden the track over the grooving melody and anthemic keys. Next up is the spirited cut ‘Psycho Babble’. A resounding sample attempts to cry out over the jacking bass and kick combo, calling out in ecstasy at intervals of the track. A minimal hi-hat jumps throughout but retracts as the track increases tempo and gallops towards the end, where Beck incorporates breakbeat elements for the final leg. 

‘Sparks’ follows with rhythmic shakers and hi-hats juxtaposing each other under the monologue of two young punters. The conversation adds a narrative to the track as it intensifies along with a gritty buzzing element. The voices become distorted as the track builds to crescendo, with the sample and music working together in unison to unravel the story of the character’s night. The finale ‘Pink Castles’ is a pacy and hypnotic trip, conjuring up the energy of both a peak-time workout and high-tempo closer. Haunting vocals and icy synths swirl around the driving elements and atmospherics, engulfing the listener into the darkness of this finishing track.

Irish live act and producer Hybrasil builds on a big 2018 with a fantastic debut on the mighty Rekids entitled ‘Afra’.

Hybrasil has put out plenty of techno tracks that have topped Beatport charts. He’s released on Octopus Records, his own self-titled label and Break New Soil, as well as playing Amnesia Terrace and Privilege Ibiza. He is a new school techno talent of the highest order. "

Slick opener ‘Afra’ is the sort of lively techno cut that gets the floor marching to its beat before erupting with big synth stabs that look to the heavens. The Millsian ‘Source Vibration’ pairs things back to flat footed, forward driving kicks and molten synths that ripple over the drums. As intensity builds, the synths grow ever more wild to ensure plenty of big moments in the club.

‘Pallas Athena & Aeoleusc’ continues to pair monstrous drum programming with uplifting chord work that is simple yet hugely effective. Rising up through the shadows, the glistening pads bring colour and future soul to the track, before last of all, ‘Bishop’ flips the script with some funkier drum programming that gets you on your toes as dubbier chords flesh out the grooves.

I chose the remixers strictly from my own personal taste in music and it’s all producers I felt could take the originals in total different directions.

Avision storms into 2020 in fine fashion with his first EP for Maceo Plex's Ellum Audio label.

Playing the decks since just 12 years of age, this American artist grew up in the musically rich New York City scene and is now at the sharp end of it with his own new school techno sound. He has released on key labels like Ben Sims’ Hardgroove, Mark Broom’s Beardman and Teksupport, and is someone that icons like Adam Beyer and Chris Liebing often reach for in their own sets.

He starts off his latest offering with 'Innocence', a bustling techno track with bulky drum programming that is brilliantly loose. It jostles you into action as dark vocals add intensity and makes for a perfectly physical dance floor workout.

Keeping up the pressure is 'Time Lapse', with big hi hats and a driving bassline all interwoven with thundering kick drums that will get the whole club up on its toes. A rising synth in the background adds an air of cosmic exploration and means this tasteful techno trip is enthralling from start to finish.

These are two superbly stylish and high powered techno cuts from this contemporary tastemaker.
