Serbian DJ/producer Mene returns to Rebellion for his second appearance on the label with his latest EP, ‘Hustle Flow’. Renowned for his adept ability to deliver slick house cuts with a darker edge, Mene has released music via esteemed labels such as Desolat, Revival New York, Moxy Muzik, and Hottrax, among others. Now his tripped-out three-tracker on Damian Lazarus’ imprint, out on 12th December, delivers the perfect journey as we dive deeper into the late-night, moody hours of club season.
The title track, ‘Depth Over Distance,’ is a dark, brooding cut where idiosyncratic arpeggiated synths meet wild cosmic stabs and slick male vocals. Up next, ‘Our Town’ sees Mene up the ante, with a driving low-end and playful percussive rhythms that meander through an eerie key. Closing the EP, ‘At Least’ dials up the energy, brimming with grit and intensity, the cut oozes percussive flair, laid over breathy vocal textures.

Made By Pete returns to Crosstown Rebels as he links up with Zoe Kypri for the anthemic ‘Horizon Red’.

Born and raised in London, DJ and producer Made By Pete has flourished in recent years, making appearances  around the globe from Set Underground (Tulum) and fabric (London) to Off Week (Barcelona) and beyond. Gaining  plaudits from leading names in Damian Lazarus, Keinemusik and Pete Tong, to name just a few, the UK talent has  crafted a string of stand-out releases via the likes of Flying Circus, RADIANT and Crosstown Rebels. Having first  touched down on the imprint in 2018 alongside Jem Cooke for ‘So Long’, with two further appearances since, he  opens the label’s 2023 schedule alongside R&B, jazz and Neo-soul singer/songwriter Zoe Kypri for the gripping  sonics of ‘Horizon Red’ - with the track set to be remixed by label boss Damian Lazarus in the coming weeks. 

“We caught each other’s attention whilst playing sets at Tobacco Dock in London, and the admiration was  mutual. We knew we wanted to create something that evoked feelings of the afterglow. That dissonant  feeling at sunset when the horizon is so fiercely beautiful, yet the inevitability of the day falling behind the  mountains is near. A dynamic track guided by rich chords, rolling organic percussion and Kypri’s powerful yet graceful vocals,  ‘Horizon Red’ is a euphoric and captivating journey balancing energetic builds with deeper moments, while Pete’s Dub strips things back as spiralling synths and hazy atmospheres take hold for a late-night trip.

Damian Lazarus celebrates 20 Years of his world-renowned Crosstown Rebels imprint with a special album  project of unreleased cuts and fresh remixes, featuring material from Black Coffee, Maceo Plex, Art Department,  Dennis Cruz and many more. 

Ringing in a major milestone in style, 2023 will see Lazarus and Crosstown mark  the 20th Anniversary of the label with a series of celebratory projects unveiled in the lead-up to summer, with ‘CR20 The Album’ set for  release on 12th May 2023.  

“20 years ago, I dreamed a dream of creating a family of like-minded, crazy individuals from all corners of the planet - releasing  music to the world and making people dance. That dream was Crosstown Rebels, and this year we are 20. Over these years, I have  forged beautiful friendships, discovered very talented artists and tried my best to help, advise and support some of the most  colourful characters in dance music. Crosstown Rebels is more than a record label, it is family. 

So 2023 will mark the label’s 20th Anniversary. This is an opportunity for the Crosstown Rebels family, a global community of  artists, DJs and creatives, and the label’s myriad of followers to celebrate this momentous milestone. There will be parties and  events around the world. A killer compilation of exclusives and special remixes, a beautiful coffee table book, a short film, and a  special launch event are planned to bring together the sights and sounds of the label’s unique and influential history. Opening the package, Lazarus’ own 2020 collaboration ‘Into The Sun’ with regular Crosstown vocalist Jem Cooke is given a cosmic rework  by Johannesburg’s Major League DJz, while Jamie Jones’ slick ‘Paradise 2011’ is stripped back and given a new lease of life by the  hypnotic and heady sounds of Art Department. Opening the B-Side, Dennis Cruz brings his percussive Latin-infused signature sound  palette to Chilean musician and producer Pier Bucci’s ‘Hay Consuelo’, before Audiojack’s ‘Feel Good’, another standout collaboration  alongside Cooke, is taken into synth-led territories as Michael Mayer reaches for an evolving bed of captivating tones. 

The second half of the project brings more excellently remixed material, both new and old, with GRAMMY-winning DJ/producer Black Coffee  turning his hand to the label’s first release of 2023 in Made By Pete and Zoe Kypri’s emotive ‘Horizon Red’, unveiling reworked melodies and  sparkling keys as he delivers an interpretation of a track which has featured as a staple in his sets. Next, the project welcomes Adam Ten &  Yamagucci’s playful yet off-kilter and wonky ‘The K Dance’ which unveils itself as a production perfect for those late night hours and early  afters, before Ellum boss Maceo Plex’s ‘Together (2011 Mix)’ brings another lost production to the mix with a driving and zipping ride through  sugary synths and soaring leads. To close, Tibi Dabo turns his attention to Guti & Dubshape’s absorbing ‘Every Cow Has A Bird’, delivering a  nimble minimal-led trip through lush pads and crisp percussion to round things out in style.

Red Axes return to Crosstown Rebels with their absorbing new single ‘Relax Shiva’, featuring remixes from  DJ Gregory and Sidartha Siliceo ft. Heiko Dijker.  

An electronic duo at the forefront of house and techno, Tel-Aviv-based pairing Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, aka Red Axes,  continue to advance and develop their own ever-evolving eccentric and idiosyncratic sound. Informed by new wave and post punk through to electronic genres across the spectrum, their releases on Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound, Jennifer Cardini’s  Correspondant and Life and Death, coupled with recent material on Higher Ground and Shall Not Fade, have welcomed a  plethora of varying soundscapes. This versatility and range is something they explore once again as they return to Damian  Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels - following on from 2015’s ‘Sabor’ - with their latest single, ‘Relax Shiva’. 

“The first time we heard the voice was when we meditated in Mexico. We tried to focus on the meditation but  couldn’t stop thinking, ‘this could be cool with a kick and some acid’. We added some dancefloor flavours back in the  studio but wanted to keep the original vibe. We produced this track really fast; all the ideas were instant” - Red Axes. 

An intensely hypnotic and entrancing effort that slowly wanders and creeps between sounds and spheres covering all hours of  the night, the warping ‘Relax Shiva’ utilises resounding and deep organic percussion alongside a spiralling deeply-rooted acid  line at its core to guide the trance-inducing vocal calls across a near-eight minute trip. Providing the first remix on the package,  Parisian house legend DJ Gregory, aka Point G, harnesses the vocals while introducing crisp, rolling drums and winding  melodies, while Sidartha Siliceo’s take featuring Heiko Dijker strips things back as the renowned Sitar and Tabla players  provide a riveting and magnetic journey capturing the imagination and transporting listeners to the heart of India.

Parallelle join forces with Nicolas Masseyeff once again for ‘Renegade’ on Crosstown Rebels, featuring a  remix from Adam Ten & Mita Gami.  

Collaborating previously on DGTL, having known each other for years, Dutch brother duo Parallelle and France’s Nicolas  Masseyeff have created a partnership within the studio that clicks. Parallelle are multi-instrumentalists, composers, producers  and Klassified Records owners with a hybrid sound that mixes up electronica, electro-jazz and underground house, while  Masseyeff is equally accomplished and draws on minimalism, jazz, new wave, Detroit and Chicago when crafting his signature  sound on the likes of Systematic Recordings and Diversions Music. Linking up again, the three talents combine for a first  outing on Crosstown Rebels with ‘Renegade’. 

Thomas of Parallelle says, “We have created a very complementary, fun and fluid creative flow when together in the studio. We  like to keep a renegade mindset and always look for a dirty groove.” And that shows across these latest creations.  

Up first is title track ‘Renegade’, a deep mid-tempo house shuffler. The drums are elegant and airy, with bright chords and a  rasping baseline. It’s a real mood builder with dramatic synth sweeps that brings a sense of class to the dance floor.  

Israeli artists Adam Ten & Mita Gami have been a creative force for the last couple of years, and their ‘High On’ EP on  Crosstown Rebels last year gained huge success, defining a new movement of psychedelic house sounds. Their remix of  ‘Renegade’ offers a slowly unfolding masterclass with moving melodies and modulated synths casting a captivating spell. 

Last of all is ‘Bandidos’, another deep and subtle track infused with rich synth work. The bright lines and deft pads are lithe  and loose over the underlapping drums, encouraging you to gaze in awe as you get lost in the mellifluous groove.

Damian Lazarus invites Meera to Rebellion as she makes her debut on the label with the release  her two-track EP, ‘Telefon’.  

Influenced by producers with unorthodox approaches such as Burial and J Dilla, blossoming Norwegian DJ/ producer Meera may be young in her career, but she is already capturing the attention of some of the scene’s  biggest names. Following the release of her debut single ‘Music For Humans’, supported by both Black Coffee and  Damian Lazarus, who she recently joined at Hï in Ibiza at the start of August, she now heads to Crosstown Rebels’  sister imprint Rebellion for the very first time as she unveils two fresh productions across ‘Telefon’. 

“‘Telefon’ started as me procrastinating on another track, but grew into its own thing throughout the day  and was a finished track by the second day. The entire process is kind of a blur, everything just came  together. ‘Slowdown’ was my first attempt at using my own vocals on a track, as well as something more  melodic and dreamy rather than a ‘club banger’. The track was very inspired by the vibe of a certain  Burning Man set.” - Meera. 

Armed with brooding basslines beneath sweeping synths and rumbling percussion, ‘Telefon’ balances  commanding core elements with sprinklings of light, hazy and wistful melodies for a hypnotic cut loaded with  suspense and energy - all while stuttered vocals exploring the frustrations of being disconnected to others ebb  and flow amongst the mix. In contrast, ‘Slowdown’ is more off-kilter initially, with Meera’s own vocals again guiding  the scattered bass hits before slowly transitioning into a resonant production guided by airy, emotive keys and  bright leads.

2015 saw Damian Lazarus create his most ambitious project to date in The Ancient Moons, producing a full length album ‘Message From The Other Side’ with a wide assortment of vocalists and collaborators from around the world. They went on to support Roisin Murphy on tour, gain acclaim from the likes of Dazed & Confused and Lazarus became the final coverstar of the year in the UK”s Mixmag magazine.

Now the tracks from ‘The Other Side’ have been reinterpreted by an assortment of stars, from techno stalwarts Juan Atkins & Kimyon Huggins, to German experimental talent Kölsch, and Acid Pauli’s sprawling fusion of weirdness. The original material is ploughed in new and surprising directions by Black Butter’s own Gorgon City and Mehmet Asian, resident at Berlin’s infamous Wilde Renate club.

Talent from Lazarus’ label Crosstown Rebels, including Francesca Lombardo, DrumTalk and Israeli trio Red Axes also produce their own visions for the music, all of which retain the mysticism of the original with added dancefloor appeal. The final four tracks revisit some of the biggest moments from the Moons to date, as the album revisits interpretations from Jamie Jones, Dixon, Serge Devant and &Me.

Co-produced by James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco, Arctic Monkeys, Florence & The Machine), The Ancient Moons was always a unique project, which has now been stretched to include the flavours of some of the most exciting artists shaping the musical landscape right now.

Recorded in Mexico, LA and London, ‘The Other Side’ features instrumentalists from Mozambique, Guinea, Pakistan, Egypt, America and even Mexico’s own Yucatan Symphony Orchestra.

Crosstown Rebels caps off the year with a moment of after-hours alchemy as Jonathan Kaspar unveils his ‘Midnight’ remix of ‘Falling Down’, the collaboration between Damian Lazarus, TEED, and A-Trak, which featured as part of the Crosstown boss’s surprise LP drop at the start of the year. Long-circulated as an unreleased highlight in Kaspar’s own sets, his new version drifts into deeper, darker territory - a slow-burning blend of tension, hypnotic groove, and shadowy melodic movement, contrasting with his previously released ‘Sunrise’ interpretation from the summer.

Since its inclusion on Acid Pauli’s Get Lost Compilation in 2012 the track has clocked up tens of millions of Youtube hits and now heralds in a much coveted artist album due later this year. Remix treatment comes from Parisian producer ​Pépé Bradock and live artist Be Svendsen.

A nomad of modern times, ​NU​ has travelled the continents with his diverse music to unearth his imitable style. Repres​ented heavily in ​Man O To, where instruments amalgamate with electronic production to become solid rhythms. An extra spark come from its lyrics, outtakes from an old Persian poem from the well known poet Rumi, who speaks of true happiness in love here performed by Ghazal Shakeri from an original recording made by renowned French composer Armand Amar.

Julien Auger aka ​Pépé Bradock​ is a widely respected producer best known for his anthemic releases on French label Kif Recordings which are still sampled heavily to this day. As a DJ, he has spun in almost every major club in the world and is known for his versatile, and mesmerising style. Bradock conjures a trippy remix and dub version of ​Man O To and fitting ode to the original.

Be Svendsen​ aka Lasse Bruhn Svendsen broke through into the international scene in 2014 with a series of productions and enchanting live performances at some of the most avant garde places to play on the earth, such as BOOM festival, Fusion, Burning Man, Symbiosis, Rainbow Serpent and AfrikaBurn. ​“‘Man O To’ is a track that has touched th​ e hearts of many, including my own,’ Svendsen explained.​ ‘Being asked to add a new chapter to its story is both an honor and my greatest challenge to date.”

Be Svendsen gets set to release the enchanting Twilight in Tankwa on Rebellion following his successful remix of NU’s Man O To on sister label Crosstown Rebels. Remix treatment comes courtesy of Berlin native Nico Stojan. 
 
Twilight in Tankwa is a mystical and musical journey that Be Svendsen explains “is the result of decades long intimate relationship with outdoor rhythmic dance experience. The foundation of the track is rooted in a synth hook from the early 50's. The vocal, inspired by a barbershop quartet, work to give it the character of a true desert hymn."
 
The remix comes from Nico Stojan who twists a fresh melody into the original over driving undertones. Having honed his musical style as resident at the infamous Bar25 in Berlin, he has also released on labels like Highgrade, Connaisseur and Upon You records.
 
Equally alluring, second original track Scarecrow was brought about by AYAWAKE who wrote and recorded the vocals. He generously passed on to Be who honored it as the crown work of his cowboy-tech-tribute to the Ennio Morricone soundtracks of the late 60's.

Serge Devant has been turning heads since the seminal Fearing Love feat. Frankfurt’s Reboot brings his flavour to the release with intricate percussion and deep underlying pads. Growing up in Sven Vath’s Omen Club, the talented musician now spearheads the ‘new sound of Frankfurt’ and has released on a wealth of labels like Circus, Moon Harbour, Cadenza and Get Physical.

LEON and Dennis Cruz join forces to create a stomper of a track, dropping on Crosstown Rebels this September. The inimitable Ewan Pearson steps up to create his own unique take on the record. 

The original version of My Hood lays down a heady, sleazy groove with a womping baseline and dizzying synths, featuring vocals from BETA MAX. The legendary Ewan Pearson takes the track in a whole new direction, pitching it down and adding a slice of funk to proceedings with a groove laden guitar riff. Prolific producer Pearson has been making records since the mid-nineties, providing remixes for the Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp and Metronomy as well as releasing his own productions under a number of guises on imprints such as Visionquest and Kompakt. The record looks set to be a massive release for Crosstown Rebels and has already become a huge anthem in Damian Lazarus’ sets this summer. 

Italian born producer LEON has produced for a number of seminal imprints including Relief Records and Monologue Music and has remixed for the likes of Audiofly and Ninetoes. He can count sets at some of the world’s most valued clubs and festivals including; Pacha, Ministry Of Sound, Zouk and Sunwaves. Dennis Cruz’s creations have earnt him high praise from esteemed outlets such as Mixmag, BBC Radio 1 and DJ Mag. He’s played at renowned institutions Fabric and Privilege and has released on key labels such as Solid Grooves, Hot Creations and Moon Harbour. He was also awarded the coveted accolade of Best Producer in the 2017 DJ Awards.

Following on from the success of last year’s ​Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun​, Bedouin are back on Crosstown with two original and evocative creations.

“‘Wastelands’ is a special one for us that carries a message about the journey of humanity. ‘Flamma’, was made with the dance floor in mind using live percussive elements with a Hurdy-gurdy lead played by Guilhem Desq who flew from Toulouse to London to record last winter.”- Bedouin 

Wastelands sets the precedence for the EP with its melancholic ambience and poignant lyrics delivered from one half of the duo Rami. Flamma adopts heavier instrumental sections that create an eerie atmosphere with a pensive and dramatic build up. 

Brooklyn-based nomads Tamer Malki and Rami Abousabe together form the DJ and production partnership of Bedouin. ​Since its incarnation, they’ve achieved notable success, with Mixmag naming them their number one Breakthrough Act of 2017. In the same year they launched their hugely successful residency, Saga, at Ibiza’s Heart. They’ve brought their distinct sound to a number of hot labels including Get Physical, Supernature, Cityfox, Kindisch and All Day I Dream. With their diverse musical influences clear in their productions, Bedouin look set to open up their sound to all the far-flung corners of the world.

Following previous impressive releases on Crosstown Rebels and sister label Rebellion, Armenian talent DAVI presents another fine display of his artistry on the spellbinding Lie Machine. Hot UK pairing Gorgon City bring their distinctive energetic brand of house to the remix.

Lie Machine opens with a delicate rhythm of bongos, combined with an undercurrent of murmuring bass and deep piano chords. The tension is built, before the introduction of DAVI’s soulful vocals and glistening synth, telling a melodic and emotive story of heartbreak.
