NDPodcast 067 - crouds - Riding Squirrels Mix

The track Code was born around 2015 from the collaboration between Sacha Ketterlin and DRVN. They explored, changed and complemented each other's musical universe, crafting techno that contains the essence of both their music. 
 
Sacha Ketterlin first met DRVN in Berlin in 2008 - when they went into the studio together two years later, a long lasting friendship as well as an eclectic musical process started.
 
With Code, both moved further towards a common ground, defined by the interacting playfulness and unpredictability of rhythms and riffs, while staying in the grid. Now they revisited Code, and gave it its final contour, keeping its mystic tone which grips the listener throughout the whole track. Both producer's styles shine individually, but the collaboration brings a unique spectrum of sound. 
 
Extending the idea of collaboration, the track also got revisited by different live artists. An On Bast transformed the track into an hymn to electronic music, bringing a fresh perspective to the original sound. The Berlin-based duo crouds reinterpreted Code into a complex beat-diving, showing their love for breaks and epic transitions.

Subsequent to their formidable collabo with Max Delius a few months prior, Andreas Schuller and Jay Nagel deliver the next tracks for RFR. “Bionic Jelly” still moves in style within the croudian sound biotope, yet places the tooly aspect a little bit more in the foreground.

“It’s a match” starts restrainedly with dubby breakbeats, being driven forward by echoes and reverb. Rattling percussions jump on the sonic carpet and little by little increase the intensity of this funky opener. Yep, that fits!

„Stomache Grind“ comes around the corner way more relaxed than its title may suggest. Nothing indigestive is presented here, in contrary a digestif made of all the ingredients which crouds are famous for: Melody, broken beats, elaborately composed dub patterns and a dose of finesse.

Heavy 90s vibes in the final track of this EP. Kinda reminiscent of Luke Vibert in his best Rephlex days. Minimal, interlaced and mystical. “Shifting Space” not only moves space, but also time. Because this is what’s needed in order to enjoy the true depth of this track.

Berlin duo crouds are back with their second release on Molten Moods. Being ardent gear lovers and live performers Johann and Andi crafted an EP of four diverse but implicitly interrelated tracks. “Switchblade” is a slick and modern statement of dance music that draws its influences from Techno and UK Bass alike. crouds are co-founders of the Sonic Ground collective that hosted many events at Berlin clubs such as Arkaoder, Griessmühle or Mensch Meier, while also running the podcast series “Technostilleben” with guests like Robert Henke or Elisabeth Steffen from ://about blank.

Vief’s next fundraiser compilation, as voted for by the 14 contributors to the release, is raising money for Palestine Solidarity Campaign to aid their work in building public support for an end to atrocities currently taking place in Gaza.

Following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7th October 2023, the disproportionate response by the Israeli armed forces and government has led to (at the time of writing):

• At least 31,923 people killed, of which more than 13,000 are children (Al Jazeera)
• The destruction or damage of more than half of Gaza’s homes (360,000 residential units) (Al Jazeera).
• ‘Catastrophic’ levels of hunger for more than 1 million people and an ‘imminent’ famine in northern Gaza (the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification).

On 26th January 2024, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take “immediate and effective measures” to protect Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip from the risk of genocide by ensuring sufficient humanitarian assistance and enabling basic services. Amnesty International and Oxfam have accused Israel of defying this ruling.

“Israeli authorities are not only failing to facilitate the international aid effort but are actively hindering it. We believe that Israel is failing to take all measures within its power to prevent genocide.”

Last month our track 'isolate' was released as part of the “Daily Order (Volume I – Urban Montage)” compilation by Shanghai-based label METASONAR. This compilation reflects the daily routine of each participant in their respective cities. The initial sounds for our track were recorded exclusively at Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin. The non-functioning airport serves for us as a blind spot in the urban landscape where we go to seek tranquility. The title originally referred to the geographic specifics of this place as well as the potential of individualistic isolation in urban society. However, latest developments regarding the Corona epidemic give the track a whole new meaning that wasn't anticipated. Today as of March 2020, the mentioned place serves another purpose: The widespread area allows us to keep the social distance while still being outside, being around people (with a certain safe clearing), do some exercise and get some fresh air. Life in the metropolis has changed quite drastically. Places like this allow us to keep some form of daily routine. We hope our music can distract you for a moment and give you a feeling of closeness, while being far away. Wherever you are on this plant, we are all in it together! Stay strong and in solidarity - practice social distancing.

PREMIERE: crouds feat. Ben Haviour — Plankton (Original Mix) [Alien Allies]

Produced during a residency in Shanghai in summer 2019, the EP deviates from the duo’s previous releases and improvised livesets. The four tracks feature intricate rythmic patterns, forward pushing shifting drumgrooves and gritty sound design. Drawing inspiration from their immediate surroundings, their experience gained from playing livesets and a deliberately chosen set of tools, crouds crafted a concept EP to leave a unique mark.

Anshan is a place in our memory perceived so long ago, we are not quite sure ourselves if it ever existed the way we remember it. Led by nostalgia, inspired by a lost feeling. We did not find what we came here for so we started crafting to fill the void. Freed by restrictions, some of which we chose ourselves and others imposed on us by foreign powers. The result is a new place to withdraw our minds to. Soon to be coated by doubts of its existence again.

The EP includes three remixes by Berlin-based artists. JakoJako presents a fast-paced interpretation of You Talk The Talk. The track Overhowl gets revisited by Alternativ3 with a leftfield-oriented version, and by Sacha Ketterlin, who puts his dancefloor stamp on it.
