Capital P (formerly P Gunna), or to give his birth name Philip Campbell, was born to a Jamaican father and an American mother (Delroy Campbell and Dianna Campbell) on April 28th 1981 in the musically gifted motown city of Detroit, Michigan. "Detroit is a rough city, but I love it," P recalls a time of back and forth struggle of his parents that eventually led him to live with his dad in Indianapolis, Indiana. "My mom and my dad were having problems, and me and my brother were getting too out of control. My mom decided it was best if we move down there with him."
Around 1996-97 he attended Warren Central High where he first started to hone his rhyme skills. "I would get free time here and there and scribble things down but it wasn't serious yet, I was focused on basketball and nothing else." Even though P didn't off taking his dormant skills that seriously, he insists that he was "sparring" and was respected. "We used to battle in the lunch rooms, we would skip and go to different lunch periods and battle. He would spend most of his time sharpening his skills but not quite ready to unleash what was brewing behind the scenes .
After years of refining his skills, a chance conversation with one of his cousins in Detroit would change everything. For the first years he worked with the group "The Formula" a combination of talented artists and members, to get a feel for the process. "We were fortunate to be guided by Proof (of D12). He showed us professionally how it's done, that's something that will always stay with me". In 09 he was approached to do a song for the Cutboxxx Collaboration Album "Sirtafication". "The Beginning of Everything" as He Calls the chance opportunity. Then he moved on to join Cutboxxx, in which he was featured on the song "I'm Bad 08". Shortly after Capital P (then P Gunna) also released his first solo mix tape, "Killer Instinct". "The Killer Instinct album was an essential platform and really opened people's eyes up to what I was doing at the time". One Of the Songs that started catching people's ear was the Infamous closing track on the album "Loyalty &amp; Betrayal".
Those projects provided Capital P with the exposure to begin working on his second mix tape release, "P Against the World". Coming in February, "P Against the World" delivers a certain uniqueness along with fresh beats and lyrics that those who know Capital P have come to expect. Capital P is now surging into the rap scene. He surpasses other artists having been influenced by a variety of artists from Proof (Of D12), John Coltrane to The Notorious B.I.G. to Mobb Deep that inspires a one-of-a-kind sound and persona.Capital P has pulled creative energy from every direction to formulate a sound that not only plays tribute to each of these brilliant artists, but is also distinctly unique.
