The second mix in this series is by Italy’s Volcov. Around since the late 80’s, the DJ, producer and collector is known for his extensive knowledge and his gift to seamlessly spin across all genres with ease.

Volcov stays active with three labels of his own (Archive, Neroli and SJNRL), producing under the Isoul8 moniker and currently maintains a busy schedule as part of the infallible Sounds Familiar roster.

‘I’ve been asked by Crown Ruler to do a dance floor mix for their new series, but i never really play dance stuff at home. So i thought to record a selection of old favourites from classic soul, rare groove and 2-step [slow soul songs that people in the UK used to actually dance to] to other 80s jams. Nothing too clever, exotic or rare [most records go for less than a tenner] but hopefully will stay in your car, computer [and who knows heart] a little longer…’

When he isn’t trawling the flea markets and records stores of his native Paris, discovering those obscure party hits that never were, notorious digger Raphaël Top-Secret can be regularly heard rocking some of the best underground parties around the world as far as Sao Paulo or Vancouver. Not afraid to push the boundaries of club music, as a DJ Raphaël can be heard moving effortlessly between everything, from Boogie, Downtempo, Rap, Reggae, Afro-Caribbean synth bangers, Ambient or Industrial dance to the deepest late 80’s and early 90’s House.

Üllar has certainly put many, many, amazing soulful obscurities on our radar, kindly shipped them to our door and on top of all that, has managed to press record for us and deliver a beautiful mix for our autumn ears.

From the north of Mexico via Berlin, the now London resident has gained growing notoriety in recent years. The magnetic DJ and collector is noted for her discerning taste encompassing rare sun-splashed music from across the planet.

Another deep dive into the sun-soaked spool of tropical influence. This time our explorative offering comes from respected Melbourne-based digger, Carlo Xavier.
The globetrotting DJ delivers a show of bravura, with a blend of 80s & 90s, Lusofinic-rhythmic bliss. "Semba Jangada" is a sharp and expansive mix to savour.

Co-founder of Sabrosa and curator for world renowned label Analog Africa, Carlo Xavier is as knowledgeable as they come when it comes to unearthing colourful curiosities from Africa, Amazonia and the Carribean. His profile as an insightful and discerning digger is noted by music nerds around the world. 

A seasoned traveller across South America and with family heritage in Portugal, his passion, particularly for tackling the assemblage of music from Portuegese speaking nations is impressive. Whether it's Semba from Angola, Batidas from Lisboa, or future-beats from the north of Brazil, Carlo leaves no ancestral stone unturned.

Words from Carlo Xavier about the mix;

Semba Jangada is a term I have given this sound from the late 80’s to mid 90’s in the Lusofonic (Portuguese speaking) regions in Africa - Angola, Cabo Verde, Guine Bissau & Mozambique. Jangada is a traditionally handmade fishing boat which seems to me to be a common theme amongst these regions and quite possibly an attribution to that characteristic buoyant swing we feel locked in the groove. Worth mentioning, Sons d’Africa out of Angola, widely responsible for the spread of these sounds across Europe, based in Lisbon and Paris became one of the main distributors of the Semba and Zouk sound which later became known as Musica P.A.L.O.P (Paises Africanos de Lingua Oficial Portuguesa) Not only do you hear Portuguese and French in the lyrics of this mix but also Kimbundo, the national language of Angola, one of the many Bantu languages from these regions.

It's easy to be fooled by the low profile, the raillery and the nonchalant personas. They are the anti-heroes in a self-promo fuelled DJ rat race. Don't get it twisted though, this lethal pairing goes deep.

Well respected by the who's who in digging circles, these two break the records to your favourite DJ who then "breaks" those records again. Over the years you could find each behind the desk at two of the world's most noteworthy record stores, Rush Hour and Redlight Records respectively. Both have proven to be ahead of the curve in digging trends yet just as admirably, are not guided by obscurities. Back with another sure fire mix for your ears - this time from NYC diggin devotee Yuki Noji.

A timely mix, as Yuki only last week wrapped up 8 years working behind the counter at storied East Village institution, A1 Records. Yuki and her partner have made the decision to return to their native Japan and begin an exciting new chapter in their lives (where sharing music will be a central focus naturally).

One of New York's most respected record nuts, Yuki has been a constant presence by those in the know. Since 2006 she has co-run the infamous Cedar Room, a much celebrated party that has been said to evoke feelings of Mancuso's The Loft. Before A1 she also had jaunts with both Academy Records and Fat Beats respectively. Her discerning taste is acknowledged by some of the city's most authoritative figures and her reputation has led to invites to play heavyweight parties like You're A Melody and Mobile Mondays. One can regularly hear her on The Lot radio where she shares her bag full of eclectic, uncovered gems. An essential listen.

Yuki has delivered a deep and delightful listen from start to finish on this one. Touching on eccentric dub, lovers rock and modern soul nuggets, bent boogie and left-field disco, this mix is the soulful nourishment you need to get you through the week.
