Berlin queer party Herrensauna—which means "men's sauna" in German—started as a seed of an idea shared between friends Cem Dukkha (AKA CEM) and Nicholas Endlicher (AKA MCMLXXXV). They were teenagers in Vienna at the time, dreaming of becoming DJs in Berlin. When they finally relocated, they started throwing parties in the basement of a Neukölln off-location. This quickly snowballed into a residency at Tresor, and now a globally recognised brand that curates lineups at clubs and festivals around the world and counts Salome, SPFDJ, Héctor Oaks, JASSS and DJ Saliva as residents.

In this RA Exchange, hosted ahead of Herrensauna's curated night at Wire Festival in New York, CEM and MCMLXXXV spoke with senior producer Chloe Lula about the party's origins and how its mission has changed, shifting from focusing on gay men to championing an all-inclusive vision of queerness. They also discussed their artwork and aesthetics—including their provocative re-appropriations of quasi-religious iconography—as well as the role that platforms like theirs have in shifting the cultural zeitgeist and attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community. Emerging from Hanoi, Di Linh is a young artist from Vietnam. Coming from humble beginnings, her musical path has grown expeditiously over the years. The young DJ has been making a name for herself and her mark on the dance floors by using a diverse and colorful music selection. She is also a resident DJ at Savage, The Observatory, Equation and recently Wonder Fruit. Di Linh flawlessly brings her taste of music from north to south around Vietnam and just made her debut in Europe and SouthEast Asia recently. Each space gives her different inspiration as she is consistently developing herself to ensure the audience falls into a trance whilst also staying true to herself. She knows how to lead audiences' emotions into her own story, leaving them with a strong impression after each set through a variety of sounds such as Disco, House and Techno.

Passionate about electronic music for many years, the young al dente DJ decided to step behind the decks after moving to Berlin three years ago. Since then, she has recorded mixes for a wide range of international labels and played in a number of well-known clubs, including the Motel Campo and the Zoo in Geneva, as well as the Void Club in Berlin and the Case à Chocs in Neuchâtel. Back in Switzerland, she made appearances at major Geneva events such as the Festival Antigel, the Zbeul Festival and the Globale Locale, forging a place for herself on the local scene. A regular at underground nights in Berlin and Holland, her preferred style is groovy, hypnotic and raw techno. However, she originally had a passion for acid and old school house. It's through this style that she became hooked on electronic sounds and where she draws much of her inspiration.

About the mix:

"Through this mix I wanted to pay tribute to the oldschool electronic music from the 90's, and more specifically to house and acid. DJs like Dr. Rubinstein and Steffi were a source of inspiration for the composition of this set. I really like the way they mix and blend different styles, creating an electric and bewitching atmosphere. It's always a challenge for me to step out of my comfort zone and offer something other than the techno I'm used to play, and that's exactly what I find exciting, so I hope you enjoy the spicy throwback!"
