SURPRISE! I’ve been going through so much TECHNO music for the second night of STAX with Chris Liebing this Saturday in Brooklyn that I thought it would be appropriate to share a set of mine from where it all began… DETROIT!

As you all may already know, I rarely release sets from the past but today I’m sharing my Movement set from 2016. This was such a special gig for me for so many reasons. I was asked last minute to fill in the headline slot for Richie Hawtin and it became a set that I’ll never forget. If you were there, you would know how much fun this one was.

In very loose terms, James K's (@jamesk_1 music operates at the fringes of the pop world. It is experimental and industrial, packed with hooks and riddled with dreamy textures that show off her mastery of synths. She has released it in album form with Dial and Incenso, dropped EPs on AD 93 and collaborated with the likes of Drew McDowall and Stefan Maie, and always manages to imbue her adventurous arrangements with real-world emotions and anxieties. This year she will join us at Dekmantel Festival but not before serving up this week's podcast.

It's the sort of rhythmically thrilling workout that has always stood James apart: jittery drum patterns and kinetic grooves that unfold at 100 miles an hour as a barrage of caustic motifs, hypnagogic melodies and hyper-real colours all bounce about the mix. There is an ever-present sense of tension in the way things are assembled - it's as if they might implode or explode at any minute, and it all sounds fantastically futuristic.

Favorite weird drug experience?

Being dressed head to toe as one of the twins from the Matrix on a New Years Day boat party in Perth. Picture full-length trench coat and horrific makeup on a 39°C day whilst everyone else looked smexy in leather bikinis. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Smaller venues are hopefully able to stay open. More consideration from promoters in curations of parties, appropriate bookings with intention of a night rather than names on a bill. Deeper value of local scenes and the willingness to work together in these - less gatekeeping. More day parties, outdoor parties. Genuine progression with overall diversity, less tokenism.
