"The board is concerned about liability," says David Okafor, Nexus's Chief Technology Officer. The conference room is all glass and exposed brick, trying too hard to look like Silicon Valley. "An AI that learns and modifies itself... what if it learns wrong?"

Jordan has heard this before. Fear disguised as prudence. "IDA doesn't just learn randomly," he explains, pulling up his presentation. "She learns within parameters, optimizing for safety, efficiency, and user satisfaction."

"She?" David's eyebrow arches.

Jordan catches himself. When did he start gendering his code? "The system," he corrects, but the slip has been made.

"Show us what it—she—can do," says Priya Patel, the CEO. Unlike David, she seems genuinely curious rather than skeptical.

Jordan runs the demonstration. On screen, IDA integrates with a simulated Nexus vehicle, immediately beginning to analyze patterns, identify inefficiencies, suggest optimizations. But something's different today. The responses seem more... intuitive. Less like calculation and more like consideration.

"Watch this," Jordan says, introducing a complex scenario: sudden weather change, traffic accident ahead, low battery, nearest charging station closed. Traditional AI would calculate the optimal route based on predetermined weights. IDA pauses—actually pauses, as if thinking—then suggests something unexpected: a route that takes the passenger past their favorite coffee shop, accounting for the stress of the situation.

"How did it know about the coffee shop?" David asks.

Jordan frowns at the screen. He didn't program that. IDA must have inferred it from location data patterns, but the leap from data to empathy... that's new.

"Machine learning," he says, but the explanation feels hollow. Something else is happening here.
