This is both a welcome and accomplished return to duty from the boys of Groove Department! As often said, the emphasis and essence of space in a track is just as important as the actual notes and beats; and both the quality and clarity of the arrangements on the first two mixes of this release certainly demonstrate this very effectively. As you have probably guessed, the standard of the production is very high and before you decide to part with you’re hard earned cash let me just remind you that the underground massive is also acknowledged here with some thumping dub tactics on the third and final mix. Conrad & Michael Cruise handle all the composing, arranging and instrumentation between them but judicious use of different vocalists give the vocal numbers a completely different feel; compare 'Girl I Need Your Lover' in vocal style featuring Ricky Smith on vocals to Here We Come Again' sung by Clifford Hughes.

Some material dates back to the 1990s while some is far more recent, and what’s particularly interesting is how sometimes the same basic tune can create various different moods and song types. For example, ‘Girl I Need Your Love’ is a vocal dominated love song while ‘Girl I Need your Dub’ and ‘Good Times Dub’ are both the same basic tune but certainly couldn't be described as ‘just’ back tracks.

DX1 might sound like one person, but they’re actually a duo composed of Leeds based brothers Michael and Conrad Cruise. The two have put together a collection here of material underpinned by the unmistakable reggae beat covering a variety of different moods, styles and subject matters using the latest in music making equipment to enable just two musicians to create a varied sound tapestry.

Along with championing established and newer reggae, roots and related acts through his work as a producer and owner of record label Cruise International, Micheal composes, arranges and handles percussion and drum programming duties for DX1. Conrad - along with composing, arranging and handling some drum programming - plays keyboards, guitar and bass.

The use of modern music making hardware, far from diluting the effect of the unmistakable reggae and roots back beat, can actually enhance it as is the case in this collection. The brothers carefully use the various techniques at their disposal and, on the sung tracks, a specific vocal sound from one of their roster of guest vocalists helps create music to suit various moods.

Some of the material has been developed over a period of time stretching back to the 90s, and it’s a testament to the timeless quality of reggae and roots music in general and the way it’s been constructed here that it sounds as fresh and vibrant as if recorded last week. 

This album is an overspill of some of the ideas we felt should have been in our first album. What we have chosen to do with this is to give you more dub tracks of varying styles, which should bring back old memories of outstanding reggae music for some of you, and for those new to this it will give you the opportunity to hear some good quality, varied reggae music.
 
We have also included additional mixes and remixes from the Dubwise EPs 1 and 2 which were released on vinyl in 1996 & 1998 respectively.

To enjoy these tracks you will need the maximum bass and treble on your stereo system so, until our next roots reggae album please enjoy this small offering.
