Haven are back with another storming delivery on their white label series, this time with a vinyl-only collection of past tracks from L.A. troublemakers 138 and DJ Angeldu$t that were previously only available as digital or tape releases.

The A1 kicks off the record with ‘Litty McGuire’, previously released on Parisian collective RAW’s ‘Second Breath’ VA compilation. Crunching drums thump away with distinct rhythmic funk and groove, with an addictive syncopated snare propelling the track to a screeching acidic synth line at the track’s half-way point. The punishment continues through to A2 track ‘Linebacker’, previously released on NYC party-starters Whirlwind Trax’s VA celebrating 3 years of Brooklyn rave The Black Hole. A cheeky synth line bubbles underneath swung yet aggressive drum rhythms in another slab of distorted dance-floor machine funk.

The B-side turns attention to three tracks from 138 member DJ Angeldu$t’s 2020 solo cassette ‘Menace To Sobriety Vol. 1’. The B1 gets straight to the point with ‘Fuck That Shit’, a certified gravely electro killer with brazen drum overdrive and fluttering bleeps and vocal sampling that goes straight for the jugular. The B2 continues the bold ghetto disrespect with ‘Prescription Poolz (VIP Mix)’. Expertly crafted pops and garbled vocals interplay with shuffling drum programming culminating in a crowd-pleasing rap refrain guaranteed to get feet moving. The B3 closes out the record with ‘Happiness Is A Cold Cup’, another crunched-out electro smasher lean tribute assaulting the ears with nasty acid and snappy rhythmic syncopation to finalise another A-class collection from Haven.

On our third (but posted second) in the Dissentient lineup is Fredrik Westerdahl who hails from Malmö, Sweden under his performing name Megatech.  Fredrik was introduced to me by a trusted techno friend and equally talented musician, Viscerale, who had toured through my hometown of Philadelphia and left us in utter ruin after her set in March.   After bothering her about this and that track I came to realize I was asking about Fredrik quite a bit without knowing. After finding him on SoundCloud and reaching out I quickly went to work to find out just a little more about Fredrik and his incredibly spacious, dark and approachable trance tracks that seem to hit the mark on every level.

From Megatech about the set: “I recorded this liveset with Ableton and my APC-40 with loops and segments from my tracks, and then I went in and improved it afterwards because some of it was really messed up and I didn't feel like redoing it 🙂 I also mixed and "mastered" it afterwards in reaaally broad strokes so some of it is not so perfect. But who cares - I like it this way.”

It has been two years since the first compilation on the Various Artists series (PEVA) of Pi Electronics and the concept has stayed true to its aim: to present a coherent selection of the label’s favourite collaborators from the roster and parties over the years. Bringing together Greek and international artists, this compilation opens with a 10 minute recording by the combined forces of Orphx and JK Flesh (Justin Broadrick), from a live performance recorded in Amsterdam. Meanwhile we also showcase the resurfacing of Vofa, the joint project of producers Sawf and ANFS. There is a variety of options in this 13 tracks release; from the raw and harsh textures of An-i and New Frames, to Lycurgus live drum set recordings, Kondaktor’s African percussive electronics and Sarin’s EBM infused techno. Some more techno interpretations, such as the hypnotic moods of Stave and Fragedis, or the more punchy sounds of Restive Plaggona and Poison Green. These shape the full picture of this second Pi Electronics compilation titled ‘Divide & Rule’.
