I'm learning my new Zoom L-12 and this has literally taken me all day. Not that that's a problem, when a device combines so may features into one package, there's always going to be a learning curve around protocols and operational choices.

I wrote this in 1985 for my band, Cryptic Posters. I cofounded the outfit with Deadman Turner, an wild slide guitarist who ripped his Maton AX5 a new one with a length of stainless steel tube on his finger. Always sounded better live than recorded. I probably won't ever do anything with it again, it's a bit infantile and the world has enough asshole atheists without me being a mouthy gobshite and starting an unholy war.

A long time ago I made an Album called This Life. One track on it, an unremarkable sorta rip of The Modern Lovers' "Egyption Reggae", "The Skanke," has been reworked as a weirdcore piece. A kinda pop rock reggae version of kicking a drum kit down the stairs and calling it free jazz. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you "Willy The Spiv."

With a new laptop comes a new version of Logic Pro X and the power to try some new plugins. I can noodle out a badly played synth hook on keys, but the necessary quantisation sucks the life out of it sometimes, I'm a guitarist, first and foremost. Hence I have a YouRock MIDI guitar/game controller, but it's like amputation of everything. I've fiddled about with the MIDI Guitar for Garage Band plugin but it could make my old laptop very latent and anything other than guitar? Forget it!

So, last night, I hummed a guitar part and a bass part and put the MIDI Guitar plugin to work. While it's decidedly atonal because my voice is horrible, the loops extracted came out as something quite entertaining, for me, anyway. Look, I love weird shit, it's OK if you don't.

I think I'll be buying a licence for for the MIDI Guitar plugin/app because this is a mature product and goram, it actually works with already recorded parts, too! I'll be able to do full charted transcriptions of my old stuff with it!
