MULTI CULTI remix resurrection of buried Swiss-Afro diamond - features impressive mixes from Kalabrese, Mickey Moonlight, the Multi Culti production gurus and Crowdpleaser himself. 

Geneva-based producer and journeyman DJ Crowdpleaser's 2011 self-titled album contained a brilliant anomaly in NENEKRI, featuring a unique vocal performance from Burkina Faso native Wamian Kaïd. It received glowing feedback from some top-calibre DJs (Joakim, MANDY, Duke Dumont, Paul Woolford, Brodinski etc), particularly for the excellent jerk-acid remix by sonic psychonaut Mickey Moonlight, but possibly due to Turbo's affiliation with harder-edged sounds, some of the highlights stayed well under the radar. Fortunately, this re-rubbed release sees the music more relevant than ever, in the midst of the multi-culti dance explosion brought on by the likes of Daphni / Four Tet / Awesome Tapes From Africa / Romare / Auntie Flo / Acid Arab / Comeme etc. 

In A-side 45rpm position, the Crowdpleaser Dub finally gets the 12" space it always deserve. This is the kind of record you would hope to hear ignite the early hours of an epic Innervisions party or Soul Clap Burning Man jam. This lost classic gets served up alongside the terrific Mickey Moonlight and a host of impressive new mixes….

Kalabrese's remix was also a bit lost in the mayhem and now gets a fresh DJ-friendly edit that hones in on the funk and flirts with the acid whilst stripping things down for the dance floor. Finally, label-heads Angelo Cruzman and Thomas Von Party bring an ecstatic early morning version, pushing the package deeper and darker, layering percussion and sun-rise pads that cushion the feeling of the end of the night, rounding out an essential multi-national, multi-lingual, multi-dimensional package.

Luanda (Selvagem Edit)

Brownswood are delighted to announce that we have signed Cuban singer Daymé Arocena.
Daymé was part of the Havana Cultura Mix project, which saw Gilles Peterson mentoring selected producers from around the world to make a record in Cuba with local musicians. She auditioned, prompting all producers to decide they wanted to work with her... In the end, she sung on three tracks on the album, including the massive "U Knew Before”. Seeing huge potential in her, Gilles invited her to London to perform at the album launch event, where she enchanted the packed out audience, and it was decided she should record a solo project for Brownswood Recordings / Havana Cultura. The announcement brought out a loud, rich, infectious laugh instantly recognizable as Dayme’s deep and chocolaty voice. “My first record, here,” she squeals. “It’s a crazy dream.”

Amazones de Guinee - Samba

Pure vibes to start our series. Live and direct, high energy African funk with a powerful vocal, recorded live in Paris in 1983.

Hailing from Guinea they were the countries first all female group, formed by members of Guinean army nonetheless. Their lead percussionist Kade Diallo was killed in a car crash just days after returning from a tour of France in the early 80’s. The group did not record again until 2008, but they continue to tour now, with a new generation of fans.

Taken from the sought after 1983 album ‘Au Coeur De Paris’, previously unreleased on 7”.

Moussa Doumbia - Samba

Malia born Moussa Doumbia and was a prolific saxophonist, composer and arranger, who lived in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

He fused African and Funk rhythms in his own unique style, comparable to the likes of Fela Kuti, Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou and Ebo Taylor. Moussa’s voice is strongly reminiscent of the almighty James Brown. 

Similarly to Fela and The Shrine, Moussa played at ‘Boule Noire’, a club in the cosmopolitan area of his town, Treichville. Every night they would play their own styles for hours to rich businessmen and locals.

‘Samba’ is taken from his 1980 LP ‘Lassissi Presente Moussa Doumbia’ released on Sacodis. Extremely hard to find.

“Nassima” is a deep hybrid of Soukous and Highlife, recorded in Abidjan in 1975 by the mysterious Bazaré D. Pablo. Thumping percussion, intricate guitar, ethereal vocals and a solid bassline add up to a perennial Sofrito classic that never fails.

Mulatu is an Ethiopian born instrumentalist, composer and arranger extraordinaire. Schooled in the UK and then the USA, Mulatu fuses jazz, latin and traditional Ethiopian styles to create a unique sound, most commonly referred to as Ethio-jazz.

Over the past decade years he has gained much exposure via the Ethiopiques series, a collaboration project with the Heliocentrics, and through the inclusion of ‘Yegelle Tezeta’ - featured here - in the soundtrack of Jim Jarmusch's film, ‘Broken Flowers’, starring Bill Murray.

Low slung, mysterious organ led groover, with building, layered horns a sampled by Nas & Damian Marley on ‘As We Enter’ released in 2010.

Originally appeared on the legendary ‘Ethiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits’ compilation album from Ethiopia in 1974, of which six out of ten tracks were by Mulatu. It was also released on an Amha 7”, that is very tough to find.

Originally appeared on the also legendary ‘Ethio Jazz’ album by Mulatu that changes hands for $1000's, released in Ethiopia. Typically Ethiopian horn line, about as classic as it gets.

A: Alemayehu Eshete - Tchero Adari Negn

Alemayehu Eshete aka the Ethiopian James Brown aka Abyssinian Elvis. struts his stuff on this funk bomb; tough breaks and changes, bluesy guitar lines and horns. Punctuated with Eshete’s JB-esque vocals.

Singer, writer and composer Eshete boasts one of the largest discography in Ethiopian music. Originally released on Amha 7” AE 240A in 1970, pressed in Lebanon due to restrictions imposed by the military government at the time, entitled ‘Chiro Adarie Negne’.

AA: Mahmoud Ahmed - Bemen Sebeb Letlash

Taken from the 1978 LP on on his own label Mahmoud Ahmed Records, LR MA 10. Ahmed is a very well known figure in Ethiopian music, who gained wider appeal thanks to Crammed Discs, Buda Music and the Ethiopiques series.

As sampled by Gaslamp Killer on ‘When I'm in Awe’ featuring GonjaSufi. Included on Cut Chemist’s ‘Sound Of The Police’ mixtape from 2010.

Randomer and L.I.E.S, back for another one: it makes a lot of sense. But "Juju" stands in contrast to the shrapnel 'n slime of our other L.I.E.S. Debut of 2015, or last year's crunching Residents. It's less an exercise in bucket-kicking techno weaponry, and closer to the complex yet oddly infectious sounds of early Bookworms or latter Shackleton.

The whole EP's a belter. Even a full seven years (seven!) into his career proper, Randomer's consistency has yet to taper off. Cop the next instalment soon: LIES063 sees release in September.

Randomer "Juju" - Boiler Room Debuts

Mars Today, the burgeoning Los Angeles-via-San Francisco producer multi-instrumentalist has a new EP to shout about. Having already jumped in the lab with Soulection artist ESTA on the single "summatime fine" recently, this next project acts as a pertinent stepping stone. Tropical Fruit is as delectable as the cover artwork suggests.

"Um Dia" is a collaboration with one of the Bay's most talented folk, Gyrefunk. It's the equivalent of a Sunday siesta with a refreshing drink in hand; sumptuous, refreshing and relaxing in equal measure. Samba and electronica combine to concoct the finest fruit punch sound, sweetened even further by Nurse Boogz's vocal stylings.

Ze’s ‘Jimmy Renda-se’ is instantly recognisable thanks to the driving lead guitar intro and funk drums; Tropicalia at it’s finest. The track is taken from his 1970 self-titled LP. As sampled by Ameriie on ‘Take Control’ and recently included in the soundtrack to ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E’.

We thought it was time to release this all-time classic samba-rock/MPB song by Jorge Ben, also known as ‘Take It Easy My Brother Charles’. Taken from his self-titled 1969 LP on Philips Brazil and also released on a 7” EP the year before.

Sampled by Drumagick on their Drum & Bass big hitter ‘Easy Boom’.
