Between Dust & Time, my double 12" on Western Lore, is a record where I explored Ambient and Dub realms within a Jungle context. Some context below...

'Towards the back end of 2018, before I was preparing to make the move to Bristol, I was beginning to think more deeply about and break down what my music actually was, stylistically speaking. I always believed dub was the strongest foundation present within my work as Crypticz but through some analysis I recognised how great an impact and influence Jungle music had been on my approach throughout the years. It was particularly prevalent in some of my earlier works circa 2013/14 but I didn’t fully realise how this had actually travelled with me and continued to inform my music and started to reveal itself again. From here I wanted to channel this learning into a new project, I decided wanted to make a Jungle record. After a listening deep dive I identified three key pillars within Jungle I wanted to deconstruct and emphasise, those being texture, atmosphere/ambience and arrangement. Over an approximately 4-6 month period from the back end of 2018 into early 2019 I indulged in this project and the result is Between Dust & Time. 
I feel privileged and honoured to be able to release this project as part of Western Lore’s incredible catalogue. The label has quickly become a hub which explores and pushes what Jungle can be whilst still shining a light on the real roots of this music and I have the upmost respect. Away from the music every release is executed with upmost care and detail for art and presentation, a quality that shouldn’t be ignored. For me WL is one of the, if not the, greatest jungle record label of the modern era. '

To kick off the new year, we’re adding to the GiraffeStep series with a release by SW England’s Crypticz, and to follow suite with DIFF005, we’re dropping it as an extended player. Four track’s built up over the past year compiled, mixed and mastered into the “Contact EP”.

‘Get Back’ sets the mood off sonically, with some almost dubstep groove thrown in along with Crypticz’s footwork influences. ‘We A Dem’ is the closest this EP gets to the dancefloor with it’s bass driven pulse groove and cheeky acapella chops. The third track is a collaboration, ‘Shift’ with Lakeway (who’s got some music lined up later on this year with the label) ­ shows off a seriously stripped back skeleton with moody bass, vocals and atmospherics. The EP is closed down with a lazy melodic and bassy number called ‘Promise’ (totally late night vibes on this one!).

I wrote Aridia Riddim in summer 2016 during the period I was working on the next two EPs, coming later this year. It's a heavily percussive track that explores ideas and themes from early dubstep, grime and garage but presents them at 160bpm. For me it paints imagery of sci-fi adventures and explorations with a particular child like sense, which is why the title borrows from a fictional planet, Aridia, which was in a video game I played endlessly in my youth.

This is the opener, April (intro). I wrote this track around 2 and a half years ago in my second year of university, that was a very free and creative period of my life where I had a lot of time to dedicate to writing and exploring my sound. This track had many forms, there is an unfinished version on my hard drive somewhere which is more of a fleshed out hip hop style beat I wanted to get vocaled. However, I felt this short 'intro' version was the place this piece felt most natural.

Chamber is a personal favourite of mine as it marks an important moment for my work. When I first moved from writing in bands to electronic music dubstep was where I began. However, since I went down the route of exploring higher tempos I got completely wrapped up in that world and lost the idea of being a songwriter/producer and sat with the 'Drum & Bass' label over my head. It took me a while to return to a tempo outside the 160 - 170 bracket due to lack of confidence in my abilities outside of that zone. I'm glad I felt ready to make the step and write outside of that world, here in the form of a more straight up Dubstep track, and do it in a way that feels distinctly me. I've been writing at various tempos since so maybe you'll hear more in the future...

Crypticz is proud to present his new EP, PATTERNS. An exploration of personal themes and questions presented in a distinct UK nature, with the sound system very much at the root. Crypticz draws from every corner of his sound palette on this release, from dubbed out meditation on 'Fountain Light', futuristic Grime/Footwork fusion on 'Pathfinder Riddim', to Drum & Bass and Jungle deconstruction with 'Echoes Past (What I Am)'. 
PATTERNS EP follows on from appearances on Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge imprint, however this time around Crypticz ventures away from the standard approach of working with a label and has taken the release process into his own hands. He states: 'I've had the absolute privelage to work with some of the best labels in the game, and will continue to do so. However I write such a high amount of music I wanted to find an avenue to share more of myself. It takes a lot of courage but I feel one of artists primary duties is to release their work into the world to continue to help, feed and inspire others.' 
PATTERNS EP is available to buy only direct from the artist, exclusivley via Bandcamp. A handful of limited edition products have been created with collectors in mind... A run of only 30 12" records, all on white label, individually stamped and numbered. Limited edition A4 posters and CDs have also been made available. The CDs are individually assembled and feature two bonus tracks, a remastered version of 2017's 'Mariana' plus an alternate mix of 'Pathfinder Riddim' . In Crypticz own words: 'Taking this approach to the release is an experiment with the intention to be more direct with my current fans and listeners. There are a multitude of platforms I normally reach with a typical release, I will be missing those this time around but this record is to reward the people on the journey with me already. I've had complete control over the process from start to finish... Physical product has become an important part of releasing music for me, especially as a collector myself. With this EP I've been able to add my own contribution for the collectors, something I hope lasts as a little gem in your own collections to enjoy for years to come. However, to avoid neglecting listeners of all kinds or those that miss out I'll be making the digital download available directly from myself on Bandcamp and additionally will make the EP available on some streaming platforms.'

I did this one around 2-3 years ago and it became one of the staples of my live sets throughout 2017 & 2018 with people regularly asking about it. I wanted to bridge the gap somewhere between autonomic drum & bass, ambient music & sound system pressure. I focused on steady and subtle progressions floating on top of a rigid foundation. My good musical homie from way back Lakeway (known in the outer rim as The Lakewave) fired up a war dub challenge in this weird time. I did tell him if he sends for me I literally can't make bangers anymore and haven't made anything hard hitting for nearly 3 years so I would cheat and upload an old Jungle banger I made back in 2016. This is exactly what I've done... Here is a piece I wrote to soundtrack my time living on the outskirts of Bath, UK. If anyone sends for me again I will be returning fire with a very depressing ambient track... you have been warned. 

Hope everyone is staying safe and well in this weird time. If you're wondering/care/worried I am still working on lots of music. The journey is evolving and changing always and all will come clear over the next couple years. Hope you're still coming along for the ride... 

I should (this being the keyword) also have a record coming out this year... however with all thats going on in the world, plus uncertainty with record releases due to a large scale fire at an integral location, I don't have any news or updates on that for you right now.
