Can't Breathe

This is a hip-hop/pop song I did August 29, 2011 for Digital recording principles called “Just Give It To Me” by rap artist Cris*styleon. I chose this song because a lot of it has a very upbeat tempo and a very fun track, targeted mainly towards a high volume party crowd. My target age group will be those ranging from ages 18-25, college students and party- goers. Cris*styleon’s voice is very high pitched with fit just right with the brightness of the synths and warmness of the hip-hop string selection.. The arrangement represents fun and living life to the fullest while moving to a nice beat, which is what this song is all about.




Just give it to me

This is a song I Co-wrote, recorded, and arranged with an upcoming called “Endless Youth”. The song is Called “Everyday” and Sound click producers Flash Beats composed the music. The approach we took on this song was something fun to get the youth singing and dancing.

Hello Classmates,
This week I made an original track in the reggae genre called “time is wasting”.

Drums: I chose the reggae variation 2 for my drum pattern. I doubled the kick and snare to give the instruments a thicker sound as well as added some room reverb to keep the instrument from crowding.

Bass: I kept the bass super simple only playing the root note on the first two beats of each bar. I used the Liverpool bass in logic and uses eq to clean out some of the mud.

Guitar: I used two electric guitars as the melody, and panned them 25l and 25r so the would stand out too much in the mix.

Organ: I used two organ tracks, one for background rhythm and groove and the second out in front playing a high triad on the third beat.  Used the 12 bar blues chord progression with  a 8c swing to give to give it more of a reggae 


Mathis Crystal Project2 time is wasting

This week I created an original song in the genre 90’s hip-hop called “stop us”. 

Drums: I started with the funky drummer pattern to establish a solid drum foundation. I added a snare roll and a rim shot hit to give it more hip hop flavor

Dissonant sound effect:  the further follow the early hip-hop traits I used the dominator synth lead on every first down beat. This was styled after Public Enemy’s “fight the power” where the sampled sound effect plays on the 1 and 3 throughout the verse.

Dj scratches: In the intro and outro I used a stock loop of a dj scratching and emceeing. I used a tape simulator effect on the loop to give it an older sound.

Guitar: I used the guitar in place of the vocals for the melody. Playing a simple pattern.

Bass: With the bass I tried to follow the traits closely by playing the bass sparsely and making it very repetitive  

Vocals: I used my own vocals and left them mostly dry to keep the simplicity of the 90’s feel going.

I also used another loop from the big fish hip-hop kit to play as a backbeat. The whistling siren sound comes from that loop. I pitch shifted the loop +1 and eqed the highs around 10k with a boost of +3db.
