School's out. We have a summer special packed with thoughts on the school year's end and warm weather vibes. CSGS program coordinator Tate Brazas and her daughter Hannah share their thoughts on being in the presence of the Queen--they went to the Memorial Day Beyonce concert and share LIVE tape from the show (Radius Beyonce exclusive!)

Ayling Dominguez (UChicago Class of 2019) just finished her first year. She wanted to see how her peers' thoughts on gender and sexuality have changed since high school.

And back in May, the Center celebrated its 20th anniversary with a two day symposium -- Summer was on the scene chatting with friends of the Center about how far it's come since its humble beginnings in 1996 and where it might be going (featuring some CSGS celebs like Lauren Berlant and Debbie Nelson.)

The Radius is a student-produced podcast out of The ​​Center for the Study of Gender + Sexuality at the University of Chicago. We're a space to chat about gender and sexuality throughout and beyond campus to the city at large and the field as a whole, from the center to the fringes!

​For my last project with the Radius (I graduated!),  I wanted to chat with my 80 year old grandma, Nina, my mom's mom. She's a former school bus driver who loves Kanye, rol​l​erskating, gardening, baking, and hanging with her grandkids. She's one of my favorite people ever. ​  I wanted to see what wisdom, advice, and two cents my grandma has to offer about romance, courtship, sex, love, and intimacy. I wanted her take on what's changed and what's stayed the same since she was coming up.

We're back! In this episode, we speak with two artists who work at the intersection of gender and sexuality, and art and activism: filmmaker Julia Rose Camus and visual artist Syrus Marcus Ware.

In the first half, Mimi Taylor interviews a UChicago undergrad filmmaker, Julia Rose Camus, who has recently tackled masculinity in its many forms, in her film Pink Boys. We also hear from some people involved with the project both in front of, and behind the camera. 

Later, Kevin Beerman and Mimi Taylor talk with artist Syrus Marcus Ware about about his artistic practices, activisms and the Movement for Black Lives. In this segment, we learn what inspires Syrus' work, what three questions he asks his subjects, and what important object he lost at a Black Lives Matter action.

Art/Activism

In this episode, Mimi takes on Hollywood--Kim Kardashian's Hollywood. Guided by first year College student, Alesia Michel (who has achieved "A-List Status" on the popular role playing game), Mimi tries to make it as a model in the cut-throat world of Kim K's Hollywood. Along the way, we break down how the game imagines different ways of belonging, how it forces players to adopt certain perspectives and behaviors, and what all of this brings to bear on questions of gender and sexuality.

In this episode of the Radius, Jamie Warren interviews Aki Johnson, an independent fashion designer who designs clothes for gender non-conforming folk.
