Gentrified Underground presents an interdisciplinary project
tackling the sonic fiction & afrofuturism of Drexciya. 
Thought as an extension to the Bubble Chamber exhibition happening at Mikro & UP STATE Zürich, GU releases a 2x12 vinyl compilation and a booklet with contributions by Abdul Qadim Haqq, Charlie Mills, chukwumaa, Dominiqueh White, Gentrified Underground, Maïté Chéniere and tracks by Xor Gate (Gerald Donald), Shawescape Renegade, DJ Dijital, Plant43, The Exaltics, Kuldaboli, Iko, Tom Ware, Luz1e and Sansibar.

The goal of this compilation is to showcase the reach and influence which Drexciya had through generations of electronic music producers and also link them together with compositorial predecessors from the early 80s. The musical timeline on this compilation starts from 1982 and reaches its contemporary end in 2019.

"More than twenty years after their first release, the sonic
fictions produced by Drexciya, the Detroit based electronic
duo founded by James Stinson and Gerald Donald at the
start of the 1990s, continues to enthral contemporary
cultural practitioners. By reimagining the Transatlantic
Slave Trade as a fiction of enforced mutation, the Drexciya
mythos opened, and continues to open, a speculative space
for the reimagining of the posthuman condition, and for
questions of becoming, origin and mutation in relation
to capitalism, finance and futurity." - Kodwo Eshun

The booklet contains unseen and unreleased Drexcyan drafts by Abdul Qadim Haqq, an interview between him and GU, contemporary art contributions by chukwumaa, Dominiqueh White and Maïté Chéniere and an academic essay by Charlie Mills.

When https://soundcloud.com/frankieelyse was just a wee guy, she loved popping her iPod nano into the docking stations at house parties. Frankie was always adamant that everyone listened to her ‘party playlist’ and woe betide you if you ever decided to swap it for your own music.

Deciding that she was too much of a control-freak to continue enduring anyone else’s tunes, Frankie went to Ibiza and learnt to DJ. Since then, Frankie’s been doing well in the Scottish scene – playing gigs at venues around the country - such as Sub Club, Cabaret Voltaire and La Cheetah Club. Frankie has also played across Europe with her twin sister as part of their DJ/violin duo, KINTRA.

Determined to give more women in the scene a platform to play out, Frankie and her sister also started Dundee-based collective, Polka Dot Disco Club. As well as this, Frankie holds a monthly residency at Glasgow’s Nice N Sleazy, spinning her favourite 50s and 60s tunes at her club-night, Retronic. Frankie is also a member of Glasgow-based collective, Rise, and loves chatting shit with them all in their group chat.

When she isn’t DJing, Frankie really likes to listen to ghost podcasts.
