Kimia Bani & Ben Osborn (Open Music Lab)

What does it mean to mix music education and activism? How can spaces for music-making be inclusive and respond to crises in sustainable, enduring ways? And whereas music technology’s history often centered on established, privileged institutions and individuals, how might we more actively collaborate across different musical cultures, backgrounds, styles, and individual voices? Kimia Bani has been both a participant in Open Music Lab and an instructor; Ben Osborn is the space’s co-founder and co-director. They’ll share their experiences and explore how we can all play together in new ways.

The talk launched the Hacklab 2022 week, where a group of fellows selected via open call explored and realised new collaborative musical ideas.

ACIDNENA, an Argentine DJ based in Barcelona, is recognized in the local scene for her active involvement with FLINTA* and queer collectives. As a resident DJ at LATINEO –a collective and party created by queer latin migrants in Barcelona– she showcases her versatile sets, which reaffirm her Latin origin. Her career ranges from prestigious clubs and festivals in Europe and South America, to industrial warehouses and small events, where she remains true to her essence as an underground artist.

Sevyn0000’s (@sevyn0000) set from our FOLD event in May is now available to listen back to in full. The New York-based producer and DJ shared a textured set with us that night, layered with psychedelic rhythms, spacious sound design and crunchy percussion. From the glitchy intro to the shadowy final track, we were hooked.

An experimental form of deconstructed club that breaks apart traditional structures, blending glitch, bass, electronic and unexpected rhythms. Think electronic club music for bodies in motion and minds in hyperspace. Controlled chaos with a femme-coded edge. 

This mix also teases an unreleased original single, produced by Nova Sharon & Dimi Blu, a glimpse into her upcoming releases.

Vizril is a multiple layer lover. His fascinations spread from experimental through breakbeat up to dub hypnotic techno. Coming from theatrical & film background, he uses decks as a performative space to explore sounds and emotions. He mixes vinyl and digital spiced with his own field recordings.

🗣️: “The first idea of the mix came from my recent feeling of creaking in my shoulder on a peak of the trip. It seemed like a full drum kit was inside there. So I dived into those sounds structures and distortion in body so as in frequencies.”
