I got the idea to record the mix after running a few of the @striations-night nights. I wanted it to represent all the different energies, genres and tempos which we go through during one of our nights. It’s quite hypnotic yet has a lot of that deep, danceable energy you get from sub-bass heavy music.

There’s lots of tracks inside that I play out quite regularly but it’s the first time I’ve put them all together in the way that I did. It was definitely tricky to get the balance right at times, but I’m really happy with the mix and glad it’s out on a great platform!

A lot of influence for sure comes from running the @striations-night nights. Hearing lots of great artists you admire play out, and getting to test ideas on a semi-regular basis really helps you to learn what you like. 

I’ve also put a lot of music made by friends in this mix as well. Knowing the person who made the track definitely helps make the mix feel more personal, and it’s something I always try to build into my mixes.

I started the night with a couple of friends (big up Rob and Elspeth) back in 2022 because we weren’t seeing the artists we wanted to see in a venue that we liked. Spanners was still fairly new back then and we loved the space so we went for it. Mary and Tobs who run it are the best and they’ve always been very welcoming. You can tell they really care which makes a big difference!

In terms of curation we try to keep it quite organic. We book (mostly) local artists who we really like and think complement each other nicely. I think a lot of it’s about helping the artists feel relaxed and free to explore their sound when they get on the decks.

Maybe one of the @loop_lf mixes on NTS. I really love the multiple tempos and genres that flow effortlessly. Have been chasing that sound ever since.

Luis Manuel Garcia–Mispireta joined Gravity's event in Prague in January 2024 to talk about his research and read excerpts from his latest book – Together, Somehow: Music, Affect, and Intimacy on the Dancefloor.

The book examines how people find ways to get along and share a dancefloor. Drawing on years of field research the author explains this bonding in terms of what he calls stranger-intimacy: the kind of warmth, sharing, and vulnerability between people on the dancefloor most of us experienced.

As a DJ, Minor Science draws on years of experience to craft sets that are controlled in form and bold in content. Having performed at venues as diverse as Panorama Bar and the Bang Face Weekender, the average Minor Science set can do heads-down mindwarp, maximalist rave meltdown, or (often) both. 

Minor Science has presented his Absent Friends live show at events such as Intonal and Maerzmusik. Emotive and absorbing, these performances explore themes of psychedelia and togetherness via improvised performance and deft four-deck mixing.

Origins Tapes 122 - Minor Science

*MC* It's Narathip! The Amsterdam-based DJ comes through with a heavy low-end mix that captures the essence of experiencing a soundsystem for the first time again. 

A cultural curator who does it all, Narathip runs the booking agency and music platform Rhythmic Culture, hosts a regular radio show on Echobox as well as works in-house at local juggernaut Dekmantel. Late last year, Narathip celebrated 7 years of Rhythmic Culture which initially started as a Soundcloud channel and has now expanded into a booking agency - with the likes of AliA, Lieke TR, Lolo Batten, Low End Activist, ojoo, Photonz and more on their roster - and last year saw the launch of their record label with a release from Zohar & Mika Oki followed by Keita Sano. To celebrate their 7th birthday, Rhythmic Culture took over Skatecafe for an all killer, no filler event with Identified Patient, Askmelater, Lieke TR, Madba, Max Abysmal, Photonz and Thrills in +41. 

In the below interview, we get to know Narathip a little more as we chat through his musical history, relationship with creativity, inspirations and approach to his craft. Plus he takes us on a deep dive into the bass bin with podcast 179.

The POLAAR label head is pushing the boundaries of wild leftfield bass music. Across the last two decades, the French DJ, producer, and label head has brought her transcendent visions of bass music to sound systems. Her latest album Rituals is a stunning encapsulation of her twisted sound chimaeras – juked basslines juddering, heavy percussion, and future techno beats soar amid moments of blackened ambiance and skittering, hip hop-adjacent hi-hats. A powerful and propulsive force behind the decks.
