ctoafn's 'From The Vaults'

After two of my hard drives failed, I lost a tonne of my old mixes, whilst I've found most of them, there were a few that I didn't and this 'was' one of them.

I recorded this at the now defunct Melbourne institution DMC Records in Prahran back in 2006 in a Studio they had upstairs as well as a breaks mix (so it's not me trying to scratch or anything). I was always proud of this mix back in the day as I'd only been playing for couple of years and a simple 'one take' on the fly thing as I only had access to the studio for 3 hours to mke 2 mixes.

This one covers some nice wide spectrum of DnB Its got a lot of Pendulum as they were huge at the time, some heavy funk, some smooth Logistics, some totally stripped back minimal ('Imminent' by Atom 1 who worked at DMC), a little bit wobble with Zinc and Wickaman, some Dillinja and even a super rare Full Cycle Megamix at the end - I will admit the mix of the first two tunes 'Slam' by Pendulum with 'Sonar' by Trace doubling up the way they do, I don't think you'll find two tunes thta go togther any better than those IMO.

I recorded this at the now defunct Melbourne institution DMC Records in Prahran back in 2006 in a Studio they had upstairs as well as a DnB mix. Breaks was massive back in Melbourne in the early to mid 2000's - every Friday night at Fractured (@ Se7en Nightclub in South Melbourne) there would be a big breaks room with lots of local guys like NuBreed making awesome tunes then you'd have a DnB sideroom. This mix is short and sweet, I recall running out of studio time.

I recorded this at the now defunct Melbourne institution DMC Records in Prahran back in 2006 in a Studio they had upstairs as well as a DnB mix. Breaks was massive back in Melbourne in the early to mid 2000's - every Friday night at Fractured (@ Seven Nightclub in South Melbourne) there would be a big breaks room with lots of local guys like NuBreed making awesome tunes then you'd have a DnB sideroom. A term called 'Tear Out' started to come into play, I guess its the equivalent of BroStep to Dubstep and this was early Tear Out, still had the funk not the straight chainsaws and reece b lines. Looking back at this tracklist its a lot of the same producers but its was all on vinyl and @ $20 for 2 songs, B sides used to be a lot beter than they are these days. This has some more local guys quite early on in their production like Nick Thayer plus you've got Dopamine and old boys Bubble & Squeek.

ctoafn (Couldn't Think Of A F%#king Name) has been a DJ and promoter for the last 18 years in Melbourne moving back home to Adelaide January 2016 and back to Melbourne late 2021). He was the man behind Collateral Damage and Therapy Sessions Melbourne representing the darkside of drum n bass and has toured/supported acts including Dylan, Limewax, Current Value, Audio, Robyn Chaos, The Sect, Raiden, The Panacea, Dom & Roland, SPL and more. He also promoted and supported the "original and infamous" Spor & Ewun show @ The Palace, Evol Intent, John B, Apex (Unknown Error) and Telemetrik to name a few.

After giving up promoting in 2009 (except for the odd warehouse party) ctoafn spent a lot of time successfully getting his brand of bass music to the masses - Fast and furious mixing, dancefloor filling, bass ridden, filthy yet funky bass ;-) Whether its DnB, Dubstep, Glitch Hop, Moombahton or Breaks you are bound to hear it all.

His "PowerDub" mix released in July 2010 has received props from across the globe with thousands of downloads, CDs etc and then stepped it up and went onto 3 decks for the 2nd PowerDub Mixtape.

This led to playing for all of the large Melbourne bass music crews like Tekstep, BBA, Heavy Innit, The Operatives, PTA as well as Bass Elements & Enchanted Forest in Adelaide, Earth Frequency Festival in Brisbane, Dark Hearts in Christchurch. He's been a resident for one of the top 3 bass crews in Melbourne 'Twisted Audio' for 10 years after stepping back into his DNB roots. He then moved back to his home town of Adelaide to perform with Bass Element & The Collective which in the process across Melbourne & Adelaide been given the responsibility to warm up or close for a 'who's who' of D&B & Dubstep acts including Noisia, Calyx & Teebee, S.P.Y, Dillinja, Dub Phizix & Strategy, Rene La Vice, LTJ Bukem, Spectrasoul, DRS, Datsik, 16 Bit, SPL, Funtcase, Gemini, Audio/Pixel Fist, Phaeleh, Current Value, Dieselboy, State Of Mind, Evol Intent, Mefjus, Stickybuds, Emperor, InsideInfo, Cooh/Balkansky, Xilent, Fred V & Grafix, The Upbeats, Black Sun Empire, DC Breaks, Ivy Lab, Ekko & Sidetrack, Trei, Brookes Brothers, Annix, Jade, Teddy Killerz & Tantrum Desire. Even got to do a NYE mix for Triple J !

I have a monthly show called 'All Styles All Flavours' on KISSFM and finally I co-hosted a weekly show on Fresh927 FM alongside Uttersounds & OhQ called 'The Ones and Twos' Thursday nights 10pm til midnight CDST from 2018-2021 and all of my shows are archived here.
