Magic Tape 52

The CTStartup podcast is all about connecting people who are passionate about the growing Connecticut startup ecosystem. The story of how CTStartup podcast got started is not unlike how startups begin. 

Episode 0 - The Story of CTStartup

The Happiness Lab was created by Vishal Patel and Onyeka Obiocha who are the owners of A Happy Life Coffee.  Their benefit corporation was created to have sustainable coffee make the world a happier place one cup at a time.  A Happy Life’s motto is…Live is Short, Live Happy, and Pass it On

Episode 1-Happiness Lab

Civic Lift was born out of a project that Evan Dobos was creating for his client at the, the City of Torrington, CT.  Seeing the need for a platform to encourage and curate civic engagement and how the people of Torrington used the new website, Evan decided to create a platform that other towns and cities could leverage. Evan has won several awards and is developing the software to scale Civic Lift to towns and cities across the United States and outside.  

Episode 2 - Civic Lift

Rosie Gallant is currently the Program Manager at reSET, and is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing the success of reSET’s social enterprise programming. In her role, Rosie focuses on leveraging resources and building strategic partnerships to support individual social entrepreneurs and the growing social enterprise sector in CT. Previous to reSET, Rosie obtained her MBA in Organizational Management and Environmental Sustainability at Antioch University New England where she concentrated on the triple bottom line business model and consulted for a variety of organizations to build strategic management plans that incorporated social and environmental value in to the business bottom line. Through triple bottom line business consulting, Rosie has been able to connect her passion and previous experience with natural systems and environmental sustainability to the financial value component of the business bottom line.

Rosie came to reSET after interviewing Founder, Kate Emery, for her Master’s thesis on Storytelling for Social Change. Kate’s story inspired her, and spotlighted the incredible momentum of social enterprise right here in CT.

Rosie is passionate about local and start-up economies, working to help build strong communities, and finding new ways to support CT’s social entrepreneurs. At reSET, Rosie’s role provides her the opportunity to work with social entrepreneurs that are serving multiple sectors including food systems, health and wellness, and education. Rosie has also traveled internationally throughout South America and Africa to study environmental sustainability in emerging economies and holds a B.S. in Natural Resources Management and Engineering from the University Of Connecticut. Her background and current work focus help her view business and CT’s entrepreneurial ecosystem through the lens of complex systems, and lends insight in to developing strategy for start-up social enterprises.

Outside of reSET, Rosie has Co-founded two businesses, is an avid organic gardener, and is passionate about supporting start-up business initiatives that build more resilient local economies in CT.

Episode 3 -Rosie Gallant Program Manager at reSET

Ethan Rodriguez-Torrent and Max Sutter are the co-founders of Escape New Haven Connecticut's newest attraction. Imagine you and your friends are locked in a room and the only way out is to solve the puzzles that lie within the room. Some may think that this doesn't sounds fun but for a growing number of people this is a perfect weekend night.  

CTStartup Episode 4: Escape New Haven- Throwing Money at Problems

Sometimes we just need to be random and that is what this podcast is all about.  We talk about some feedback we got on the podcast, the new Apple iWatch, the startup ecosystems around the country.  You will also find out why Eric got so excited watching the Bachelorette and a new Indiegogo campaign for a new wearable tech specially designed for men.

We will be switching up the style of the show from time to time.  Next week we will return with a another interview of a CT startup.  


CTStartup Episode 5- The Random Show

The plight of EpiPen users has been brought into the public conciousness this past year, inspiring two young entrepreneurs to concieve of a smaller, better way to deliver life-saving epinephrine.

Join Chris and Eric as they talk about the inspriation and potential with two members of the four-person team behind this mobile and cost-effective EpiPen replacement.

The CTStartUP podcasts is all about connecting people who are passionate about the growing Connecticut startup ecosystem. The story of how CTStartUP podcast got started is not unlike how startups begin.

IT BEGAN WITH COFFEE

Two entrepreneurs Mike Kauffman and Eric Francis had been meeting for coffee and discussing everything from what they were working on to what they wanted to see for Connecticut. The two connected over the fact that they are avid podcast listeners and thought it would be fun to start a podcast interviewing entrepreneurs and startups that are based in CT. At the same time Mike and Eric were talking about this, two startups lawyers were having a similar conversation. 

Dave Menard and James McLaughlin lawyers for Murtha Cullina LLP are also avid podcast listeners and thought about doing a podcast interviewing startups as well. Then one magical day during a meeting between Eric and Dave they both mentioned their ideas about a podcast interviewing startups and just like that the wheels began turning. 

Soon after that meeting, Mike, Dave, James, and Eric got together to sketch out the idea of the CTStartUP podcast. Just over a month later they were recording shows and establishing the team. 

WHAT IT IS & WHAT WE HOPE IT TO BE

The CTStartUP podcast is a representation of how the Connecticut startup ecosystem is getting stronger and how when you meet the right people magic can happen. Our hopes are that others within the CT will be able to have the same experience we have had in getting CTStartUP off the ground. We want our listeners to use the podcast to learn about the exciting things happening in the ecosystem and to reach out to our guests. 

We are excited to be on this journey and are looking forward to Connecting Connecticut through the Startup ecosystem.
