"Obsidian City is track 7 of REPTIEL's album Down Below World: After awaking and regaining their senses, the group exits the cave passage they're in and enters an enormous cavern comprised entirely of obsidian. The inhabitants of this Obsidian City are amazed strangers have traveled such a long way to their city. They know there can only be one reason they have come: to awaken Thos. Predicting oblivion, they tell the group there are some life forms preserved in amber living out this way, thinking if the group confronts the life forms they will be petrified by them, thus preventing oblivion. The Obsidian City denizens direct Sine, the Spirit Usher and the Thosians "down this way" to a passage on the other side of the city. ("Obsidian City" artwork by Doug Welch)

Originally released on The Cubby Creatures' first album The Blessed Invention, "Until the Quake Comes" was recorded in July 1999 when The Cubby Creatures were allowed to take over a friend's father's house for a weekend in Davis, California. Now referred to as The Davis Sessions, the Cubbies set up their instruments and a Tascam 8-track cassette recorder in the house, and enlisted their pal Rico Dominguez to engineer. This version of "Quake" was remixed in 2020 by Brian Weaver after having the original 8-tracks digitized. This was no small feat since only 7 microphones (for 7 individual tracks, the 8th being left open for the vocals to be added eventually) were used to record all the drums, guitar, bass, keyboard clarinet and violin. As Weaver reports, "We elected to use 3 mics on the drums and 1 mic for both bass and guitar. Having bass and guitar on a single track, plus accounting for all the tape hiss and the fact that the recordings were all done live without any overdubs made for a very challenging mixing session." But Weaver described the mixes, including this version of "Until the Quake Comes," saying "They are what they are, and they're about as good as I can get them, and I love them." This mix and the rest of The Davis Sessions remixes will be released on forthcoming Source Mirror Record volumes, the fourth of which is due out soon.

Until the Quake Comes by The Cubby Creatures

This version of "See Level" by REPTIEL was performed live (and mostly acoustic save for a Moog) at (the now defunct) Viracocha in San Francisco in March 2015, opening for benjamin cohen. When we were asked to open at this show, we were told we needed to play mostly acoustic (because of loud noise ordinances). So we brought acoustic guitar and bass, a few pieces of our drum set, and then we were able to utilize Viracocha's piano. However, the upright piano was facing the wall on the stage, and the sound person didn't want us to try to move the piano (for good reason), so Alec had to sit facing away from us, which made it difficult to cue each other. It took a few songs to get into the groove, but got there, and "See Level" was once of the highlights. Jason Y. is on acoustic guitar, Brian Weaver on acoustic bass guitar, and Jason G. is using brushes on his drums. REPTIEL's set was recorded using Weaver's handheld Zoom H4 recorder placed at the sound person's control booth.

This song is a reworking of an earlier Cubby Creatures' song, "I Have Ebola Now." The original song was written by Jol as a sort of ironic take on feeling paranoid about getting sick. Ebola was making the news in the mid-1990s with outbreaks in Gabon and Zaire, which is when the original song was written. That song is very prescient for this coronavirus time but perhaps a little too close to home. However, the reworked version, "I Have No Irony Now," is also prescient but probably easier to stomach right now. The song was re-arranged by Bill with lyrics written by Karl and was in response to the period after the 9/11 attacks in which it seemed that you could not make light of what happened. Irony was dead. The world had changed and would never be the same again we were being told. The Cubby Creatures never recorded the song (in any of its arrangements) in a studio setting, but this version performed on KALX 90.7FM Berkeley in November 2001 was well recorded and a mostly spot-on performance.

Cubby Control Records (CCR) is a record label located in San Francisco, CA. CCR founder and sole proprietor Brian Weaver has been self-releasing music in San Francisco since 1997, first as Poopdeck Pappy, then via the Embryo Compilations, and subsequently as a member of the bands Coolidge, The Cubby Creatures (who also collaborated with the legendary San Francisco record label Rodent Records), and most recently with REPTIEL and The Cubby Preachers. CCR was formed to bring all this music and any future releases under one umbrella.
