A few years ago I was supposed to do a remix for a UK vocalist called Random P. True to form I didn't get it done, and I always felt bad about it cos I'd met him at a show we played together and he seemed like a good lad. 

A few more years go by and I'm working on this beat, it's got Sisqo on it just going "Da way you move ya bahdyyy" over and over again, pitched up and down singing different melodies. It was brilliant to be fair, but I decided to chop the acapella that I'd been sent for the Random P remix on it instead, and I quite like how it turned out, although the mix is a bit rough.

The man himself (Random, not Sisqo), was kind enough to OK my sharing it here. The original vocal was masterfully performed and recorded and was a lot of fun to use. The original tune was called Tears of a Clown, it's on youtube, go check it out.

When I started this one I was trying to make a tune that would sound like a proper pop song, with verses and choruses etc, just from sample pack vocals and midi instruments and stuff like that.

One thing I learned while working on this is that I don't ever want to compose, then edit, then mix this many elements in a track again!

It also got me thinking about how a computer can never truly replicate the energy of real people playing music together, and that maybe it's a fool's errand to really try to do that. It takes forever and there's always one little thing where the groove sounds off, an awkward transition, stuff like that where a great band would just play a good take and it's down. I woke up a lot of mornings and didn't want to work on this, really couldn't bear to hear it over again.

I ended up taking a lot of extended breaks and then coming back, only really pushing on and finishing it because I'd sunk so many hours into it, and not necessarily because I think it's one of my best.

*Trivia

The chorus used to go:

"I'm gonna rock like that (watch me) 
 I'm gonna rock like that"

but I was worried I'd get sued by Soulja Boy cos one of his choruses sings "watch me" so I replaced it. Some might call that delusional, I just think it's a good working habit

Here are two of the better versions of this track. I made a lot because I really liked the lead melody and never really felt like I could do it justice, but these two edits are decent with hindsight so here they are. Piano version was mastered at Transition Studios.
