006 Myles Mac

Myles Mac has been adding colour to Melbourne’s electronic music scene for over a decade now. His presence is felt across a number of seminal productions: from the Lost Weekend parties at Boney – where a few of Waxflower’s own shared late nights and sweaty mornings – to his pairing with DJ Camov and the formation of Project 95 and, of course, the world renowned Melbourne Deepcast label and mix series responsible for showcasing local and international artists. Myles stands out from the crowd as a consummate curator of feel good times.

Big Mac played amazing mixes for us at Waxflower throughout his residency. This one provides a glimpse into his exceptional taste, sleuthing between jazzy vibes and street soul and hip hop. No doubt if we locked the doors and begged him to keep playing we would have ended up deep in Mac’s first love: house. Shifting gears and pleasing ears – that’s Myles Mac.

Let's face it, if you're anywhere in and around dance music, there's an inherent fascination with the Danes - more specifically, the SAFE family from the local scene of Arhus. Their enigmatic aura, aloof promotion approach, and most notably, stylistic authenticity puts them amongst the most talked about collective in the sonisphere, and the next guest on our mix series is the very epitome of the hype that surrounds them. 

Manmade Deejay, is one of the original founding members of Arhus' most prominent exports', 'Regelbau', and has been contributing with a steady program of stellar releases since their inception - among others across their vast network of imprints. His sound embodies what we love about the collective; diverse, difficult to define, yet unmistakably 'him'. 

We're lucky enough to have two and a bit hours of Manmade's selections that take you on an explorititive expedition through his musical directory. When we say, 'journey', we really do mean it, starting off with ethereal otherworldly textures, and slowly building to a chronological jaunt through the hours of the dance floor. A truly special mixtape and one we hope you'll savor for years to come.

E2E: Did your move to Melbourne influence the mix? 

A little bit, yes. I have been feeling particularly nostalgic lately and that probably came through in the selections. Last week, I drove from Glebe to Brunswick in a 12 seater bus with my cat Romeo. We listened to this mix together to see how it sounded on the road. Unfortunately, Romeo did not like it and he did not like much that day. 

E2E: Were there any environments or contexts that you had in mind when putting this mix together? 

As the title of your mix series suggests, music can be a wonderful accompaniment to activities. When I have watched a film that has really affected me I’ll often listen to the soundtrack for weeks after and sometimes make my own imaginary soundtrack of songs that fit with the world of the film. While I was reading Cormac McCarthy’s ‘Border Trilogy’, I wanted to find ways to stay in the novel when I wasn’t reading it. The novels are set at the southwest border of the United States and the characters spend a majority of the novels riding on horseback, often alone and usually on a quest to avenge a loss. I found myself preoccupied imagining the sort of music the characters and their horses could be listening to, riding under lonesome skies, contemplating their place in the world. 

I don’t expect that much of your audience owns or has access to a horse. Still, I hope some of them can enjoy these songs on journeys of their own. 

E2E: Any news or projects coming up with Best Effort, Ken Oath Records or Rimbombo?

Nothing is planned on the release front and my bank account implies that maybe it’s time for a bit of a break. Best Effort Dance Parties will continue every few months at Freda’s and I’m looking forward to some summer parties in Sydney with my Rimbombo buds Adi and James at the end of the year.

For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

To the dedicated few and the newly dedicated, this is a celebration laced with appreciation. The cause for this - we’ve reached a modern-day milestone. We’ve made it to 30 (which is a total of about 3 in podcast years). Honestly, I never thought I'd make it to 30, but I soon came to realise how much good music is out there, and how I should use my powers for good rather evil, so here we are. 

For this momentous occasion, we have a very fitting transmission. Something that he and I have been working towards for the last two years. The man responsible for an audible gift from the gods is none other than Andy Hart himself, aka the slug face millionaire aka choices from the lake aka undies. I call Andy not only a good friend but also a good inspiration, a good breath of fresh country air, a good dose of realism and just a flat out good person. I’ve lived with him, I’ve traveled with him and I’ve shared more than a towel with him. I can comfortably say that Andy will be at my wedding, my funeral and everything in between. 

This mix is the perfect summary of the journey so far. I'd like to think we’ve explored quite a lot over the last couple of years, and I'd also like to think that there’s so much more out there. This perfectly woven galactic tapestry transcends every aspect that you think you know about most things and rewrites the rest. The culmination of many years of putting tracks aside has paid off immensely. The thought and the planning behind this mix actually baffle’s me. It’s the perfect narrative without the narrative, a story without words, a tale of triumph. I may sound a bit dramatic but you obviously haven’t listened to it yet. Just shy of 4 hours, this is the perfect soundtrack to your life in general. It transcends not only stages of the day but also stages of your mind. I'm yet to find the perfect moment/space to listen to it but I think a long drive back from a really good holiday would fit perfectly - or just a cruisey Sunday spring afternoon at home.

We're very pleased to share with you this long, saucy mix straight from the soul of Louis McCoy, founder of renowned Inner Varnika festival and all-round Naarm music aficionado. 
As Louis writes:

"I've been subconsciously compiling this mix for years now, but it's made a lot more sense during the last 6 months. I think it's important to remember to feel something, whether it is pure joy or overwhelming melancholy, I wanted to cover both aspects in this and everything in between. A lot of the music in this mix really means a lot to me, from my mother's jazz influences to my teenage years on a strict diet of emo trip-hop. I wanted to make a soundtrack from literally putting the kettle on first thing on a cold Sunday morning to hopefully take you through to a semi-productive day in the kitchen with someone you love. To be honest, just enjoy it, any way you can."
