I am learning x64 assembly programming in Windows operating system. Today I wanted to print some result to the console. However, unlike linux operating system, in windows we can use syscalls directly without any pain. I've written the following program to print a hello world message to the console but it doesn't show anything. I couldn't figure out what is wrong with this code.


I'm not sure if you're still wanting an answer, probably not since this was asked almost a year ago, but I'll reply to help anyone who may also be wondering. I just started trying to learn MASM and I was having a lot of trouble setting everything up, in fact I'm still working on getting x86 to work correctly on an USB (I think masm32 must be at the root of the USB(note: for old version, updated version will be more like x64))


ml /coff /c /Cp msgbox.asm
link /subsystem:windows /out:msgbox.exe kernel32.lib user32.lib msgbox.obj
ml is the name of the MASM assembler. Running it will create the msgbox.obj file.

/coff
 instructs MASM to create an object file in COFF format, compatible with recent Microsoft C compilers, so you can combine assembly and C objects into a single program.

/c
 tells MASM to perform only the assembly step, stopping after creation of the .obj file, rather than also attempting to do linking.

/Cp
 tells MASM to preserve the capitalization case of all identifiers.





Dear Sir,
I have downloaded MASM32 and installed it on my notebook which runs on windows vista 32bit.
I opened a source file(hello world) in the editor.
 So far I have not been able to find any commands that when I type in the editor that the programme will run and show the output file .
I will be greatful if you let me know what commands I have to typed, to get the desired output on the screen?

Tip:
 I like to create a separate partition for my assembly projects and install MASM to the root directory of the partition. This makes it much easier to include libraries and includes such as windows.inc and friends.


On the next dialog press New and enter the path to the MASM bin directory. This contains the tools needed to compile and link assembly. For me the path is D:\masm32\bin. In most cases just change the drive letter if you installed to a different partition. The rest of the path is the same.


As the title says I am trying to run a program written in the x86 Assembly language. I'm using DOSBox to do this but I have tried numerous times to install a copy of MASM that will work and each time DOSBox has given me some error message such as telling me that "this program cannot be run in dos mode" or that masm is an illegal command. Would anyone here know where I can find an up to date download link for MASM? I'm happy to provide further detail if necessary and my OS is 64-bit if that helps at all.
