Can Ayhan began his music career in 2010 at Izmir, Turkey. His passion for music was started at a young age by collecting cassettes, CDs, and records, which helped him develop a musical perspective over the years. Can honed his skills through resident and guest performances at various venues. Early in his career, he started hosting radio shows in Turkey and internationally, including in Spain and Germany.

Can specializes in deep tech and minimal house genres in both his radio shows and live performances, though he occasionally incorporates soul, funk, and disco records into his sets.

After years of performing at various clubs and events on the Istanbul scene with different projects, he relocated to Australia, where he continues his musical journey in Sydney. Can currently hosts radio shows on Dinamo FM every Sunday, presented by Berlinist Records.

This week on the Cadenza Source to Cycle podcast, we welcome Oxia, AKA Olivier Raymond.  

The French-born producer, DJ and live performer has had an illustrious career since the mid 1990s, recording for a variety of labels under the Oxia name, including the labels he co-founded, Ozone Records and GoodLife, as well as for international imprints such as Kompakt Extra (the classic ‘Domino’ track from 2006), Tsuba, Infine, 8Bit and Saved.  He has also collaborated with many other artists over the year, including work with Agoria for Visionquest, and Nicolas Masseyeff for Noir Music.

Cadenza Podcast | 153 - Oxia (Cycle)

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact. 


Sawn Off

On this week’s Cadenza Music Source to Cycle podcast, we welcome a British DJ who has played a hugely pivotal part in house music’s development since the late 1980s.

Eddie Richards has been described as “Britain’s godfather of house & techno” by the clubbing magazine Mixmag, cutting his teeth on the London DJ circuit at the legendary Camden Palace in the 80s, and at important clubs like Clink Street and Heaven in London, and the Hacienda in Manchester.  One of the first DJs to ever champion house music, Eddie was a firm favourite on the UK rave scene, and over the years has become widely recognized as one of the founders of the often misinterpreted genre of tech-house.  Alongside Terry Francis and Nathan Coles, Eddie has been an integral part of the Wiggle nights for over 20 years now and also plays regularly at Fabric in London, as well as clubs all over the world.

Eddie also been producing right from the start of the house explosion, his Jolly Roger moniker released blueprint acid house in 1988/1989, and he’s consistently released records ever since.

For the sophomore installment of our various artists series ‘Watergate Affairs’, we bring you four searing cuts of dance floor mania from Ruede Hagelstein, Adana Twins, Marco Resmann and Tiefschwarz.

Kicking it off is Ruede’s timeless, future classic; ‘Flash Balls’. At nearly eleven minutes, it’s a masterfully crafted tune reminiscent of classic Carl Craig and the best things that happen when Berlin meets Detroit. Adana Twins ‘Etah’ follows with a lush palette of sonics dispersed over an incredibly infectious groove emanating in a gorgeous ballad that will surely induce those magic moments. Next up is Resmann’s ‘Mobius’, a contagious groover that delicately balances the ability to fit any time or setting, day or night from open airs to club lights. Completing the compilation is Tiefschwarz with their enchanting symphony; ‘Backyard’ whose opulent shimmers and warm low end administer a superb trip into the ethereal. We hope you enjoy!

The remixes on the do incredible justice to the original mix of  "What You Do" and are greatly diverse in what they set out to achieve. Don’t expect dancefloor euphoria or big tunes but intelligent deep house and electronica. You can completely visualise their cool parties as this sets the mood pretty sharpish with the brilliantly deep opening track, Night Plane – ‘Angels of sin.’ The party continues with a few tempo and mood changes but always with an emphasis on quality stylish house grooves. Late night grooves to have your head nodding. Now to get an invite.... 9/10
