Maelstrom - Expression Directe [Cultivated Electronics Ltd - CELTD05]

Veteran French producer, Maelstrom made his Cultivated Electronics debut in 2018 with ‘ECZO EP’.  Now more than two years later and following a new album on RAAR, he returns with another EP, this time for CE’s vinyl-only subsidiary, Cultivated Electronics Ltd.

Joan-Mael Péneau has been making music for over fifteen years, with a history of aliases and side projects, illegal raves thrown in warehouses, fields and basements, but he soon came into his own under his Maelstrom moniker, releasing music on the likes of RAAR (the label he co-founded with Louisahhh in 2015), Cultivated Electronics, Central Processing Unit, Mechatronica, Private Persons and Discos Atónicos.

Though his name suggests chaos, Maelstrom’s music delivers intention, focus and precision that are evident on his ‘Expression Directe’ EP, which features four new tracks of deep and expressive electro-funk.

Fellow Frenchmen The Hacker and Commuter take their inspiration from the TV series, Chernobyl to create an imaginary soundtrack for their collaborative EP on Cultivated Electronics, which has already been on full throttle in 2021 with releases by DMX Krew, London Modular Alliance, Morphology and Maelstrom across both CE and sister label, CE Ltd.

Cultivated Electronics isn’t letting up any time soon, with this new EP from two major forces of the scene who should need no introduction, having between them released over the years on labels including Zone, Mannequin Records, Klakson, Dark Entries, Bass Agenda, Elektrofon and too many others to mention.

Here they deliver three new punchy electro tracks that convey their love of vintage electronics and machine funk, but with a modern touch that will hit all the right notes for electro fans, with names like ‘Roentgen’ (a unit of measurement for the exposure of X-rays and gamma rays) and ‘RBMK’ (Chernobyl’s nuclear power reactor).

The EP includes the added treat of a remix by MMT-8, otherwise known as Ed Upton (DMX Krew) and label head Phil Bolland (Sync 24) who deliver an escalated reworking of ‘RBMK’.

Kerrie - We Continue Part 1 [Cultivated Electronics Ltd - CELTD06]

Kerrie makes her CE debut with the first of two EPs for their vinyl-only sister label, Cultivated Electronics Ltd.

Originating from Ireland, Kerrie made a move to the UK in 2010 settling in Manchester.  She soon joined Eastern Bloc Records, spending her time behind the counter selling records before moving into the role of events coordinator in 2017.  Honing her DJ skills through a residency at Eastern Bloc, Kerrie has gone on to be a regularly booked act for some of the UK & Ireland’s most prestigious underground club nights and recently made her Berlin and NYC debuts.  

After a few of years of producing in the box Kerrie made a move to a hardware-only set-up in 2014 and since then has also taken her analogue live shows on the road to various events and festivals including Freerotation and The Warehouse Project.  In 2017 she released her first track for I Love Acid’s 10th anniversary compilation, with a follow-up EP for them in 2020.  She has also released an EP on Semtek’s inimitable Don’t Be Afraid and has recently started her own label, DMF with a string of releases lined up for this year. 

‘We Continue Part 1’ is defined by Kerrie’s organic production style across its four tracks, bridging the gap between raw, driving tech and twisted electro with acid flourishes, tough beats and dark bass notes.

‘Inside The Microbeat’ is the long-awaited debut album by Sync 24. 

London’s Phil Bolland, known as Sync 24 has been flying the electro flag for over two decades via his popular Scand parties and beloved Cultivated Electronics label which he launched in 2007 as a direct response to the dwindling electro scene in the UK at the time. The label has gone on to feature many of his own releases, his collaborations with the likes of Silicon Scally (Carl Finlow), DMX Krew (they collaborate as MMT-8), The Exaltics and Morphology as well as playing host to many of electro’s leading lights, eventually becoming instrumental to the scene’s resurgence in more recent years.  

Now it’s time to turn the spotlight firmly on his solo work. Across it’s eleven tracks ‘Inside The Microbeat’ is not just a collection of 12”s although tracks like the album’s name sake, ‘Oriental Sunset’, ‘Drunk on Delays’ and ‘Lightwire’ are firmly primed for the dance floor, there’s also more experimental beat-work like ‘Inspired Law’ and ‘Sluper Smashed’, or retro electronica like ‘Haunt Times’ and ‘Spatial Racing’, as Bolland drives you through his own intimately constructed landscape.

 The limited-edition version of the record is pressed on triple colour vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve, with a 12-inch original canvas print taken from a section of the artwork and hand-finished by Will Barras. Packaged in a high-quality tote bag exclusive to the album bundle.

  Will Barras is an award-winning animation director based in London. Alongside his moving image work, he has gained massive recognition as one of a new crop of artists associated with Bristol's renowned street art scene. He was also a founding member of the famously progressive Scrawl Collection and exhibits his paintings and illustrations worldwide with his original artwork selling from £1000 - £5000.   

“I have been a huge fan of Will's work for a long time, so I was really pleased to get the chance to collaborate with him on this album project. Will and I worked on the concept of ‘Inside The Microbeat’ together, creating a technological spaceship-like tunnel made from synthesisers, drum machines, and wires that fade into the distance. We wanted these to be two original pieces that could be used as the sleeve artwork for the record. The idea was to create one image for the outside of the record and a second image for the limited edition gatefold version. Each of the limited edition packages will include a piece of original artwork hand-finished by Will making each one unique.” - Sync 24

The next release on Cultivated Electronics Ltd shines a light on some of the fresh talent emerging from within the Electro scene across this double-vinyl 12" which will be pressed on balck and colour vinyl editions.

IMOGEN has enjoyed a whirlwind rise, and her reputation as one of the most talented newcomers is well recognised. Her discography includes releases on Earwiggle, Shared Meanings and fabric where she is also a resident DJ, and presents a monthly radio show on NTS. She opens the compilation with the tough beats and twisted melodies of 'Anatta'.

ARMEC (Robbie Mecrow) is an Electro and Acid producer from Manchester who has already impressed with releases on Nebulae, Echocentric, Further Electronix and most notably 20/20 Vision. His beat-led track 'Acute' delivers a serious punch with plenty of sub-bass.

Russia's SERGEY TIMOSHOV is the promoter and resident DJ at Warehouse, held weekly at the Propaganda club in Moscow. Here he utilises that experience in fine style for his club-ready 'Electro Beats 1'.

UK artists OBSERV and CYPHON collaborated on their debut EP for Gunfinger Food last year, but here they deliver 1 track apiece. Obzerv brings pure destruction on his tumultuous track 'Octro'. While Cyphon, known for his live hardware sets, supporting artists like Assembler Code, Radioactive Man and Afrodeutsche, plus releases on International Chrome and Blind Allies brings dark phunk to 'Nightmare'.

KHALILIAN is probably best known as one half of US duo Joonam (with Elon Admony) who have been self-releasing on their Balagan label for the last few years. 'Valda' pitches things down with Detroit-esque chords and a deep, subterranean atmosphere.

FAZACK is a 21 year old DJ/Producer from Cardiff now based in Bristol. Better known as a DJ, he's spent the past 9 year collecting records and garnering inspiration from all aspects of dance music. For the last 3 years he's focused on production and draws on cosmic influences for his contribution, 'Weightless'.

LINDSAY GREEN is one half of Co-Accused, long-standing residents of Glasgow’s prolific underground club scene via their club nights in Paisley’s Club 69 and the launch of their Co-Accused Records label in 2021. Going solo for the closing track, 'Creepin' bridges to gaps between Electro, Techno and Acid.

A new EP by UK DJ / producer, Controlled Weirdness lands on Cultivated Electronics Ltd (CE's vinyl only sister label) in July. Heads will know Controlled Weirdness (real name Neil Keating) from his monthly radio show on Threads, his Presence Unknown label and Electric Sweat events. But he's actually been rocking the decks since the mid-'80s when as a youngster, Electro and early '80s pirate radio started his obsession with electronic music and he played his first gig at "The House of Dolls" in Farringdon where he soon became resident. After a stint in New York from 1989 he met Joel Bevacqua aka DJ Deadly Buda, who after returning to his hometown of Pittsburgh invited Neil to play at the first ever rave there in 1991, leading to a 6-month stint of events. Neil eventually returned to London in 1992 and started a radio show on pirate station Chillin FM alongside his sister, Stacey (later known as NoYeahNo). Many more events followed until in 1996 he formed Unearthly Records. Since then, he has played worldwide from plush clubs to dirty warehouses and has appeared on a variety of labels including Audio Illusion, Control Tower, Praxis, Zhark, Dirty Needles, Fdb and Still Raven. On 'In The Shadows' he delivers 4 earthy and raw Electro cuts with exciting electronics, tough beats and wonky acid.

CYRK with some fierce ruling electro tracks that fit perfectly in a Helena Hauff dj set. The title track Attack of the Blow Up Dolls is a robotic electro cut, while the other three tunes are smooth and at times remind us of some of the classic I-f releases with bubbly analogue basslines, frantic synths and relentless electro beats. Matti Turunen is probably best known for his work as Morphology (with Michael Diekmann) but here he goes it alone for a new EP on Cultivated Electronics vinyl-only series,  Cultivated Electronics Ltd.

Finnish electronic maestro, Turunen's previous solo ventures without his Morphology cohort are rare.  The last time was a track for AC Records in 2013 (which was remastered earlier this year for Bandcamp), but appearances have also cropped up on Abstract Forms, Muhk and Bliq in previous years.

For his 'Radau' EP on CE Ltd he turns up the Electro-funk to the max with lush arrangements, dulcet melodies and gritty beats – there's a warmth in the machines.

Silicon Scally, the alias of electronic music producer Carl Finlow, released his critically acclaimed album 'Mr Machine' in 2002 on SCSI-AV. The album was a masterful blend of electro and sci-fi soundscapes, showcasing Finlow's unique style and production prowess, which took the listener on a journey through a futuristic world of machines and technology. It ranks as one of the finest electro records of the early noughties. Fast-forward to 2023 and Sync 24's Cultivated Electronics label is proud to present 'Mr Machine PT 2'. Like its predecessor, the new album is filled with intricate synth melodies, driving rhythms, and pulsating basslines, all perfectly balanced to create an immersive listening experience. 'Mr Machine PT 2' once again showcases Finlow's ability to not only create relentless beats for the dancefloor but also dynamic soundscapes that transport the listener to another world. Created using a mixture of both old analog gear and very modern plugins, both albums were written with a very strong emphasis on the machine aesthetic, reflecting the cutting edge of what was available at their respective times. For this first instalment the pair turn in two tracks of expertly crafted production that pays homage to the history of the genre with their own modern twist. The A side's ''Basic Channeling'' is given remix treatment from Robert Witchoski a.k.a. The Exaltics who steps up the gears with a 4/4-esqe rework in his signature style. To close out the EP, remix duty stays in the family with a rework of ''Syncopated'', a track that features on the next EP, nephew of Cisco and cousin of Zein, Torai, who shows that high end electro production definitely runs in the veins of the Ferreira family.

Coming next on Cultivated Electronics Ltd (CE’s limited vinyl offshoot) is a V/A EP entitled ‘Onderwereld’ which takes its name from a former atomic bunker based in The Hague (Netherlands) that housed music studios, offices and the Intergalactic FM station, Onderwereld Radio.  The building had to be vacated last year, but the amalgamation of some of those artists and their creative resources lives on.  Together, they encapsulate the new underground sound of The Hague.

Opening the A-side is a track by Crave Festival organiser, Cosmox who delivers tough staccato Electro-funk on ‘Electrostress’, before 543ff (a regular player on the Dutch Electro scene who’s released on ÆX and has a forthcoming album on Diffuse Reality) brings stripped-back beats and layers of melody on ‘Easy’.

Keeping the Onderwereld collaborative ethos alive, 543ff joins forces with Star-kid (Bunker Records) and Gamma Intel (Brokntoys / Pinkman) on the B-side, for ‘Three City Firm’.  Their original version is dark and bristling, while 543ff’s remix takes the track on a galactic ride.

The pair first met last year at the Rex club in Paris where they were both playing.  After a passionate chat about their shared love for electro they decided to work on a release together. Several emails and phone calls later, the idea for a split 12" was formed.

There’s probably no finer way for Cultivated Electronics to launch their 2021
schedule than with a new release by DMX Krew with his first solo EP outing on
the label, having previously appeared for a remix of J.T.C’s ‘In Transit’ (2014)
and as MMT-8 (2016) – a collaborative project with CE’s label head, Sync 24.
Edward Upton has given us over 25 years of sonic wizardry with numerous

London Modular Alliance make their CE debut with the ‘Stray EP’ for Cultivated Electronics Ltd (CE’s vinyl-only sister label) in February.

London Modular Alliance is a collective that lies somewhere between a shop and a cult.  From their base in the former industrial warehouses of Hackney Wick, London Modular have been designing their own cases, working out practical ways of chaining multiple synths for live performance, selling units from their shop front, and taking themselves on the road to run workshops and gigs.  From the lazer-lit confines of sweaty clubs to the hushed environs of Tate Britain and the V&A, they fill spaces with the whoosh and sweep of man co-operating with machine, bringing the dynamics of dance music to the ideals of modular synthesis, and forcing anyone with ears to acknowledge the potency of the format once more.  With them, the sound of the future has returned.

The EP includes three intricately crafted modular Electro tracks from LMA, featuring soaring melodies and dappled beats that manage to extract depth and soul out of machines, alongside a punchy remix by Sync 24 that delivers a tough metallic groove to close the release.

Veteran French producer, Maelstrom made his Cultivated Electronics debut in 2018 with ‘ECZO EP’.  Now more than two years later and following a new album on RAAR, he returns with another EP, this time for CE’s vinyl-only subsidiary, Cultivated Electronics Ltd.

Joan-Mael Péneau has been making music for over fifteen years, with a history of aliases and side projects, illegal raves thrown in warehouses, fields and basements, but he soon came into his own under his Maelstrom moniker, releasing music on the likes of RAAR (the label he co-founded with Louisahhh in 2015), Cultivated Electronics, Central Processing Unit, Mechatronica, Private Persons and Discos Atónicos.

Morphology return to Cultivated Electronics with the follow up to their 2017 EP ‘Mind Stealers’ (CE023).  ‘The Dark Wheel EP’, coming in March marks their fourth EP for Sync 24’s label.

Morphology are Finnish duo Michael Diekmann and Matti Turunen.  Formed in 2009 they have already clocked up a series of EPs and four albums across labels including Solar One Music, CPU, FireScope, Zyntax Motorcity, Semantica, and of course, Cultivated Electronics.

Kerrie made her impressive Cultivated Electronics Ltd debut in July with ‘We
Continue Part 1’ which has grabbed the attention of media and DJs alike,
recently featuring in DJ Mag’s Staff Picks amongst other accolades. She now
returns in September for Part 2.

This Irish born, Manchester based DJ and producer has been rising in the
ranks since first joining the Eastern Bloc crew and over time has taken her
analogue live shows to the likes of Freerotation and The Warehouse Project.
2021 has also seen the launch of her label, Dark Machine Funk Recordings
(DMF).

Kerrie makes her CE debut with the first of two EPs for their vinyl-only sister label, Cultivated Electronics Ltd.

Originating from Ireland, Kerrie made a move to the UK in 2010 settling in Manchester. She soon joined Eastern Bloc Records, spending her time behind the counter selling records before moving into the role of events coordinator in 2017. Honing her DJ skills through a residency at Eastern Bloc, Kerrie has gone on to be a regularly booked act for some of the UK & Ireland’s most prestigious underground club nights and recently made her Berlin and NYC debuts.

After a few of years of producing in the box Kerrie made a move to a hardware-only set-up in 2014 and since then has also taken her analogue live shows on the road to various events and festivals including Freerotation and The Warehouse Project. In 2017 she released her first track for I Love Acid’s 10th anniversary compilation, with a follow-up EP for them in 2020. She has also released an EP on Semtek’s inimitable Don’t Be Afraid and has recently started her own label, DMF with a string of releases lined up for this year.

‘We Continue Part 1’ is defined by Kerrie’s organic production style across its four tracks, bridging the gap between raw, driving tech and twisted electro with acid flourishes, tough beats and dark bass notes.

Fellow Frenchmen The Hacker and Commuter take their inspiration from the TV series, Chernobyl to create an imaginary soundtrack for their collaborative EP on Cultivated Electronics, which has already been on full throttle in 2021 with releases by DMX Krew, London Modular Alliance, Morphology and Maelstrom across both CE and sister label, CE Ltd.

Cultivated Electronics isn’t letting up any time soon, with this new EP from two major forces of the scene who should need no introduction, having between them released over the years on labels including Zone, Mannequin Records, Klakson, Dark Entries, Bass Agenda, Elektrofon and too many others to mention.  

Here they deliver three new punchy electro tracks that convey their love of vintage electronics and machine funk, but with a modern touch that will hit all the right notes for electro fans, with names like ‘Roentgen’ (a unit of measurement for the exposure of X-rays and gamma rays) and ‘RBMK’ (Chernobyl’s nuclear power reactor).
